What this file actually does
ifxcardm.dll is a card-specific smart-card minidriver used with Microsoft’s Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider. A minidriver is a DLL that lets Windows communicate with a particular smart-card type.

Microsoft documentation explains how smart-card minidrivers work. Microsoft’s archived KB909520 information lists Ifxcardm.dll as part of an older Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider package and identifies the Infineon SICRYPT CardModule Card.
Historically, the file was included with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 as a preinstalled card module. Older Microsoft packages also listed x86, x64, and IA-64 variants. A commonly indexed historical 32-bit build is version 6.0.6001.18000, with a size of about 0.1 MB. Treat that information as historical metadata, not as a current universal version requirement.
Diagnose the error before replacing anything
The wording of the error gives useful clues, but not always a complete diagnosis.
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when using a certificate or smart card | Missing or damaged card-module package | Run Windows Update, then reinstall the official card package |
| Error appears immediately after Windows starts | Old startup entry or removed enterprise middleware | Find the calling startup program |
File is absent from C:WindowsSystem32 |
Damaged Windows component or optional vendor package | Run DISM and SFC, then check the card software |
| Error began after antivirus detection | Quarantine or blocked component | Review Protection History before restoring anything |
| “The specified module could not be found” | A dependency may be missing | Repair the package and inspect the application or event log |
| Error appears after removing old software | Orphaned registry or startup reference | Uninstall or disable the parent software |
| Smart-card reader stopped working after an update | Reader driver or card package problem | Check Device Manager and reinstall the official driver |
First ask whether the computer actually uses an Infineon SICRYPT card or related certificate software. If it does not, do not assume that downloading the DLL is the correct repair. The message may come from a leftover startup command that should be removed instead.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates
Windows Update can restore or update system components and smart-card support.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every applicable update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the check until no further applicable updates are offered.
- Test the smart-card login, certificate application, or program that produced the error.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Windows Update may not restore an optional vendor package, so a clean Windows scan does not prove that the Infineon component is installed.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use Microsoft’s supported repair sequence. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker checks protected system files against that repaired store.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates and run the command again. Microsoft also documents using a matching repair source, but it must correspond to the installed Windows edition and build.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, the missing file may be an optional smart-card package rather than a protected file in the current Windows image.
Running repeated scans without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting unnecessarily slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the correct smart-card package remains the definitive fix when that package is missing.
If SFC cannot repair the files, create a readable summary of the relevant CBS log:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop. If it identifies ifxcardm.dll or related smart-card files, continue to the package repair steps rather than copying a replacement DLL from the internet.
Fix 3: Reinstall the official smart-card package
Use this fix when the computer genuinely uses an Infineon SICRYPT card, certificate login, or specialized reader.
The correct installer may come from the card issuer, enterprise administrator, computer manufacturer, or the authorized provider of the reader and card. Older KB909520 downloads are legacy packages and should not be installed blindly on a current Windows version.
- Disconnect the smart-card reader if its software instructions require this.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for entries containing terms such as SICRYPT, Infineon, CardModule, smart card, or the card provider’s name.
- If the package is present, select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall or Modify, depending on what the installer offers.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current package from the organization that supplied the card or reader.
- Choose the package matching your Windows architecture.
- Run the installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Restart again.
- Insert the card and test certificate or smart-card access.
Install the complete package, not only a DLL. Smart-card minidrivers use INF-based file and registry installation. Microsoft explains this minidriver registration process.
Do not use a random historical DLL merely because its displayed version resembles the one in an error database. The package must also install the correct registry entries, dependencies, architecture, and card configuration.

Fix 4: Check the smart-card reader and its driver
A reader driver does not normally replace the card module, but a broken or outdated reader installation can make the same certificate workflow fail.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Smart card readers.
- Expand Smart cards if that category is present.
- Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the reader and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the card.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain it from the card or reader provider. Do not substitute a generic driver for a card-specific package.
Manually checking several reader models and driver versions is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan detects, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the card provider’s official package remains the preferred source.
If the reader works but the certificate application still reports ifxcardm.dll, the missing component is more likely the smart-card minidriver or its parent application than the USB reader driver.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a damaged, unsigned, or unexpectedly modified DLL.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection related to
ifxcardm.dll, Infineon, SICRYPT, or the smart-card package. - Do not restore the file solely because its filename looks familiar.
Restore a quarantined file only when its original path, digital signature, and package provenance are credible and the computer genuinely needs the component. Otherwise, remove the questionable file, run a full scan, and reinstall the official smart-card package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNever disable antivirus protection just to install a DLL downloaded from an unverified source.
Fix 6: Repair an obsolete startup entry
If the message appears at login and you do not use a smart card, the DLL may be referenced by old middleware that was removed incompletely.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries related to old certificate, security-token, reader, or enterprise software.
- Right-click a clearly identified obsolete entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
For a more detailed check, use Microsoft’s troubleshooting utilities or inspect the application’s own uninstaller. Also review Event Viewer:

- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System around the time of the error.
- Record the executable named near the DLL failure.
Disable or remove the parent application, not the DLL itself. If the startup program is still needed, reinstall that program from its official installer instead.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native system directory. SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components. The folder name alone does not tell you which file an application needs.
A 32-bit application requires a compatible 32-bit component, while a 64-bit application requires a compatible 64-bit component. Using the wrong architecture can produce a message that the DLL is not designed to run on Windows.
The archived Microsoft package lists separate x86 and x64 files. Select the package that matches both Windows and the application using the card. If a 32-bit legacy application needs the component, installing only a 64-bit package may not solve its error.
Also remember that “the specified module could not be found” can mean a dependency of ifxcardm.dll is missing. The named DLL may exist while another library required during loading does not. Repair the complete package and inspect the calling application’s event log rather than copying more DLLs into the program folder.
Why regsvr32 ifxcardm.dll is usually wrong
Do not start by running:
regsvr32 ifxcardm.dll
Smart-card minidrivers are normally installed and registered through an INF package. Microsoft states that modern minidrivers do not use DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer as their normal registration mechanism.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes the command for registering DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. If regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not necessarily mean ifxcardm.dll is corrupt. It may simply be the wrong installation method.

If the repair still fails
If Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the official card package do not resolve the error:
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the exact executable that requests
ifxcardm.dll. - Check the application’s installation and update history.
- Reinstall that parent application if it still uses the smart-card component.
- Check Event Viewer for dependency or activation errors.
- Review Windows Security Protection History.
- Run Microsoft Defender’s full scan.
- Consider System Restore if the problem began after a known installation or update and a suitable restore point exists.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair when broader protected-system corruption remains after component repair.
An in-place repair should be performed with installation media or an official Microsoft setup path that matches the installed edition. Back up important files first.
Frequently asked questions
Is ifxcardm.dll a legitimate file?
Yes. It is associated with the Infineon SICRYPT CardModule Card and Microsoft’s Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider. A legitimate filename does not prove that every copy is safe, so verify its path, signature, and installation source.
Do Windows 10 and Windows 11 need this file?
Not necessarily. Later Windows versions may obtain equivalent smart-card support through Windows Update or a vendor package rather than containing this older file. A computer without a SICRYPT card may not need it at all.
Should I download ifxcardm.dll from a DLL website?
No. Random downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have the wrong version, or fail because the required registry and dependency setup is missing. Repair Windows or install the complete package from the organization that supplied the card or reader.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX problem?
Usually not. ifxcardm.dll is a smart-card minidriver, not a normal application runtime. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the targeted repair unless the calling application separately proves that it needs one of those runtimes.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
SFC may report no corruption because the file is an optional vendor component rather than a protected file in the current Windows image. In that case, reinstall the official smart-card package or remove the obsolete startup reference.
Can I delete the error by copying the file into System32?
Do not do that. The wrong architecture or an untrusted file can cause new loader failures and security problems. Smart-card packages also require installation metadata beyond the DLL itself.
