If ig9icd64.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, reinstall the correct Intel graphics driver rather than downloading a loose DLL. The file is an Intel OpenGL driver component, and the safest repair is normally the computer manufacturer’s graphics package or a matching Intel driver installed cleanly.
What this file actually does
ig9icd64.dll is a genuine Intel graphics-driver DLL. Its description is OpenGL(R) Driver for Intel(R) Graphics Accelerator, and Intel’s symbol repository lists both ig9icd64.dll and the related 32-bit ig9icd32.dll files.

The 64 suffix identifies the 64-bit component. It is used by 64-bit graphics-driver installations and 64-bit applications. A 32-bit application may instead need the corresponding 32-bit component supplied by the complete driver package.

The file belongs to an Intel display-driver package. Windows may store it within the protected Driver Store, often under a DriverStoreFileRepository directory. The exact path varies by driver package and Windows version.
Older Intel graphics packages include records for version 21.20.16.5103, a 64-bit file listed at 13.25 MB. That is an older package version, not a universal version that every Windows computer should use. Intel graphics generations and supported Windows versions differ, so select the driver for the actual GPU and computer model.
A game, emulator, Java program, CAD application, or other OpenGL software may mention this file because it uses Intel’s OpenGL implementation to render graphics. The application is often only the place where Windows first notices the driver problem.
Causes by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because ig9icd64.dll is missing from your computer.” | Incomplete, removed, or corrupted Intel driver | Reinstall the correct graphics driver |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because ig9icd64.dll was not found.” | Missing DLL or an unavailable dependency | Reinstall the complete driver package |
| “Error loading ig9icd64.dll. The specified module could not be found.” | Missing DLL or a dependency that cannot load | Check the driver, architecture, and Device Manager |
| “There was a problem starting ig9icd64.dll.” | Failed driver initialization or damaged installation | Perform a clean graphics-driver installation |
| “ig9icd64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” | Wrong architecture, damaged file, or incompatible driver | Remove the mismatched package and install the correct one |
| The file exists, but the game crashes inside it | Driver bug, OpenGL incompatibility, application fault, or unstable hardware | Update or roll back the driver and test another OpenGL application |
The phrase “specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Think back to what changed immediately before the problem. Common triggers include a Windows update, graphics-driver update, OEM recovery, application reinstall, disk cleanup, or antivirus quarantine.
Fix 1: Identify the Intel graphics device
Before downloading anything, identify the hardware that owns the file.
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the complete name of the Intel graphics device.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the driver provider, date, and version.
- Open the General tab and check Device status.
Possible entries include an Intel graphics adapter, Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, or a device with a warning icon.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Windows shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the Intel driver may be missing or not currently active. If Device Manager shows an error code, record it before continuing. Do not assume the newest generic Intel package is correct for an OEM laptop. Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer, Asus, and other manufacturers may customize their graphics drivers.
Fix 2: Reinstall the correct graphics driver
Use this order:
- Open the computer manufacturer’s support page.
- Search using the exact computer model or service tag.
- Select your installed Windows version.
- Download the Display, Graphics, or Intel Graphics driver.
- Close games and graphics applications.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Choose a clean-install option if the installer provides one.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not require it.
- Launch the affected program again.
If no suitable OEM package is available, use Intel’s graphics driver installation guidance, Intel Download Center, or Intel’s graphics driver list. Intel Driver & Support Assistant can detect compatible Intel hardware on supported systems, but it does not make every old Intel GPU compatible with every current Windows release.
Check Device Manager again after installation. The Intel adapter should appear under Display adapters without a warning icon, and the driver version should show the package you installed. Then test the affected application.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through OEM pages and guessing which of several drivers is stale: its free scan shows what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and the OEM driver remains the preferred choice for a customized computer.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 3: Perform Intel’s clean installation
Use a clean installation when the ordinary installer fails, the file keeps disappearing, or Device Manager still shows a damaged driver.
- Download the correct OEM or Intel graphics package first.
- Temporarily disconnect from the internet. This helps prevent Windows Update from installing a different driver during the process.
- Press
Win+Xand select Device Manager. - Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel graphics device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Delete the driver software for this device.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the graphics-driver installer you downloaded.
- Select Execute a clean installation if that checkbox is available.
- Restart Windows again.
- Reconnect to the internet and test the application.
The screen may temporarily use a basic display driver during this process. That is expected. Do not manually delete individual DLLs from the Driver Store or copy replacement files into system directories.
If the normal removal does not work, Intel also documents using Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode. Follow Intel’s procedure carefully, then install the correct graphics package immediately afterward.
Fix 4: Check for a bad update or roll back the driver
If the error began after Windows or a graphics-driver update, check whether the previous driver was more stable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck optional driver updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a matching Intel graphics update if one is offered.
- Restart Windows.
Do not install every available driver without checking its manufacturer and device description.
Roll back the Intel driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the Intel graphics device.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, install the OEM-recommended package manually. A newer generic driver can be unsuitable for an older laptop even when it supports the same broad Intel graphics family.
Fix 5: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected driver file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events for
ig9icd64.dllor an Intel graphics-driver package. - Expand an event to inspect its location and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if the location, digital signature, and driver package are trusted.
- Reinstall the complete driver package afterward.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. Microsoft explains the risks of allowing detected files in its Protection History guidance. Protection History keeps events for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are relevant when several Windows features or applications are malfunctioning, or when Windows component corruption is suspected. They do not replace an Intel graphics-driver installation.
- Press Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store used by SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to the graphics-driver steps rather than repeating them indefinitely.

If you prefer an automated repair workflow, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds before any repair is applied; the repair itself is done by the full version. It is optional, and it should not be treated as a substitute for reinstalling the Intel driver when the driver package is the damaged component.
Fix 7: Repair or reinstall the affected program
If only one game or application fails while other OpenGL programs work, the program itself may be damaged or incompatible.
- Open the game launcher or application manager.
- Find the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Verify files, or Verify integrity, if available.
- Restart the program.
- If it still fails, uninstall it from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again from its official source.
For an older game, try its compatibility settings, an application patch, or another supported renderer if the program provides one. Replacing ig9icd64.dll beside the game executable is not a proper substitute for repairing the driver or the application.
Fix 8: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
ig9icd64.dll is a 64-bit component. A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL, and a 32-bit application may require the 32-bit graphics component.
You can check an application’s architecture by viewing its documentation or installation directory, although the folder name alone is not conclusive. The safe repair is to reinstall the complete graphics-driver package, which supplies the appropriate components, rather than trying to swap ig9icd64.dll with ig9icd32.dll.
Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. Windows driver packages are staged and managed through the Driver Store, and Microsoft says its contents should not be manually added, removed, or modified.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. ig9icd64.dll is an Intel graphics and OpenGL implementation DLL, not normally a COM or ActiveX component.
Running this command:
regsvr32 ig9icd64.dll
will generally produce an entry-point or registration error. It will not repair a missing, mismatched, or corrupted graphics driver. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes its registration purpose.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore when the problem clearly began after a driver, Windows, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if needed.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the results.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove drivers or applications installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.

After updating or rolling back the driver, check whether other OpenGL applications fail. If only one older program crashes, focus on that program’s patch, renderer, compatibility settings, or known-compatible OEM driver.
If several applications fail, the screen flashes, the Intel adapter repeatedly disappears, or Device Manager reports errors, record:
- The Intel GPU model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition
- Installed graphics-driver version
- Affected application and version
- Full error text
- The event that preceded the failure
- Whether other OpenGL applications also crash
A faulting-module report naming ig9icd64.dll identifies where the crash was detected, not necessarily the underlying cause.
FAQ
Is ig9icd64.dll a Windows system DLL?
No. It is an Intel graphics-driver component used for OpenGL rendering. Windows may store it within its protected driver package location, but it is not a general Windows runtime DLL.
Should I download `ig9icd64.dll separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can provide malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or an unsigned file. They also leave the underlying Intel driver package incomplete. Use the computer manufacturer’s support page, Intel’s official driver resources, or Windows Update.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix this error?
Not normally. Those repairs are relevant only when the actual error names a file from one of those runtimes. Reinstall the Intel graphics driver for an ig9icd64.dll error.
Does Windows 11 support every Intel graphics device?
No. Older Intel graphics hardware may not have a current Windows 11 driver. Check the computer manufacturer’s package and Intel’s compatibility information before changing operating systems or forcing a generic driver.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter?
That usually means the Intel graphics driver is not installed or active. Install the matching OEM graphics package, restart, and confirm that the Intel adapter returns under Display adapters.
Can I delete old Intel drivers from the Driver Store?
Do not delete individual DLLs or manually modify the Driver Store. Remove or replace drivers through Device Manager and the official installer. Multiple driver versions may coexist there for legitimate rollback and installation purposes.
What information should I provide when seeking further help?
Include the exact error message, Intel GPU model, Windows version, driver version, affected program, recent change, and whether the file is missing or merely named in a crash report. That separates a driver-installation problem from an application or hardware failure.
