igdumd32.dll is a 32-bit Intel graphics driver component, and its absence usually means the Intel display-driver installation is incomplete, damaged, or incompatible. If Windows says the file is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair the graphics driver rather than downloading an isolated DLL.

What igdumd32.dll is

The file is associated with Intel’s LDDM User Mode Driver for Intel(R) Graphics Technology. It is a user-mode display-driver component used by older Intel integrated graphics hardware and the applications that communicate with it.

It is not:

  • A Visual C++ Redistributable file
  • A DirectX component
  • A .NET component
  • A general-purpose Windows runtime
  • A file that should normally be registered with regsvr32

The file belongs to the Intel graphics-driver package installed for the computer’s processor or graphics adapter. On 32-bit Windows it may be found under System32. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit driver component may be stored under SysWOW64 or another driver-managed location. The folder alone does not prove that the file is legitimate or that it is the correct version.

The correct package depends on the Intel graphics model, Windows edition, system architecture, and sometimes the computer manufacturer’s customizations.

What the error message means

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because igdumd32.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because igdumd32.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting igdumd32.dll.”
  • “Error loading igdumd32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “igdumd32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages do not all indicate the same failure.

A missing-file message can mean the file was deleted, quarantined, or never installed. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by igdumd32.dll is missing. “Not designed to run on Windows” usually points to corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible driver.

If igdumd32.dll appears as the faulting module in an application crash, the file may already exist and load successfully. In that case, the underlying problem may be an old Intel driver, an incompatible rendering path, unsupported hardware, or a defect in the application.

Before repairing: record the evidence

Before changing the driver, write down:

  1. The complete error message
  2. The application or game that fails
  3. The full path shown for igdumd32.dll, if available
  4. Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
  5. The Intel graphics model
  6. The file version shown under Properties > Details
  7. Whether the issue started after a Windows update, driver installation, game update, or antivirus detection

To identify the graphics adapter:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Record the complete Intel adapter name.
  5. Double-click it, open the Driver tab, and record the provider, date, and version.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

A 32-bit application requires the 32-bit graphics component. Installing a 64-bit file with a similar name does not replace it.

Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Intel graphics driver

This is the most likely solution for a missing or corrupt igdumd32.dll.

Use the computer manufacturer’s support page first, especially for laptops. OEM graphics packages may contain custom power-management, display, switching, or monitor support that a generic Intel package does not include. If an OEM driver is unavailable, identify the adapter on Intel’s official Download Center and use a package that explicitly supports that hardware and Windows version.

Do not choose a package solely because it contains a familiar DLL version. Older Intel graphics packages are hardware-specific, and a package intended for one processor generation may not work correctly on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard reinstall

  1. Download the correct graphics package before removing anything.
  2. Close games and graphics-intensive applications.
  3. Run the driver installer.
  4. If the installer provides Execute a clean installation, select it.
  5. Complete the installation.
  6. Restart Windows, even if the installer does not require it.
  7. Test the application again.

A successful repair normally removes the missing-file message and allows the affected application to start. It may also restore the normal Intel adapter name in Device Manager instead of Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale or mismatched hardware drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair and driver installation are handled by the full version. The manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source when an OEM package is available.

Clean reinstall when the normal installer fails

Use this procedure when the driver installer repeatedly fails, the adapter shows an error icon, or the problem began after several driver changes.

  1. Disconnect the computer from the internet. Unplug Ethernet or turn off Wi-Fi.
  2. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the Intel graphics adapter.
  5. Select Uninstall device.
  6. Enable Attempt to remove the driver for this device or Delete the driver software for this device, if shown.
  7. Select Uninstall.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Windows may temporarily use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. This is expected.
  10. Run the correct OEM or Intel graphics installer you downloaded earlier.
  11. Restart again.
  12. Reconnect to the internet.

If the Intel adapter does not return, open Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes. If Windows reinstalls the wrong driver immediately, disconnect the network again and repeat the clean installation with the correct package.

Fix 2: Check Windows Update and roll back a recent change

A Windows update or graphics-driver update can expose compatibility problems with older Intel hardware or older games.

First check for current updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install appropriate updates.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Test the application.

If the problem started immediately after a driver update:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Double-click the Intel adapter.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  6. Choose a reason and confirm.
  7. Restart Windows.

If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, install the previously working OEM driver manually. Keep the error date and driver version with your notes so the regression can be identified.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use Windows component repair when several applications report damaged system files, Windows itself behaves abnormally, or the driver installation fails because protected components are corrupted. These commands do not replace the need for the correct Intel driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the commands once more. If the error remains, return to the Intel driver reinstall rather than repeatedly running SFC without changing the driver.

Outbyte PC Repair can save time when you are manually hunting through Windows repair results; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Intel package or the affected application.

Fix 4: Repair the affected game or application

If only one game or program reports igdumd32.dll, the application installation may be damaged or may be incompatible with the installed Intel driver.

For a Steam game:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the verification to finish.
  8. Start the game again.

Other launchers usually provide a Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair command. Use that function rather than copying a DLL into the game folder.

  • High-Performance Engine Clock: Delivers an engine clock of 2540 MHz, providing the compute power needed for demanding professional applications and AI inference.

If the program still fails, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from its official installer. This is especially important if the error occurs only in that application.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a legitimate driver file, or it may detect an impostor with the same name.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and type Windows Security.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an entry involving igdumd32.dll.
  6. Check the detected file path and action.

Do not restore the file automatically. Confirm that its path, digital signature, and surrounding driver package identify Intel or the computer manufacturer. If the file is in an unexpected application folder, has no trusted signature, or was detected as malicious, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Reinstall the graphics driver from a trusted manufacturer source instead of restoring an arbitrary copy.

What not to do

Do not download an isolated DLL

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file with missing dependencies. Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or the game directory often hides the real driver problem and can create DLL-loading or preloading risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the computer manufacturer’s support site or Intel’s official driver pages. The safe repair is the complete, hardware-matched graphics package.

Do not install Visual C++ just for this file

igdumd32.dll is an Intel graphics-driver component, not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Installing a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET will not normally supply this file. Install those components only when the application reports that it specifically needs them.

Do not run regsvr32 on it

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A display-driver module is not normally registered that way. Running a command such as this is generally inappropriate:

regsvr32 igdumd32.dll

It will not repair a missing driver package and may produce another confusing error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not enable random Windows Features

Windows Features are not a general DLL repair mechanism. Enabling legacy components may be appropriate for a specific application, but it will not install the Intel graphics driver or correctly replace igdumd32.dll.

If igdumd32.dll is the crash module

When an application crash report names igdumd32.dll as the faulting module, first confirm that the file exists and belongs to the installed Intel driver. Then:

  1. Update or clean-reinstall the OEM Intel graphics driver.
  2. Install available updates for the affected application.
  3. Disable optional overlays, injectors, or compatibility utilities used by the game.
  4. Test the application with its lowest graphics settings.
  5. Check whether the crash affects one program or several.
  6. Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the matching Application Error entry.

A crash in one older game does not prove that the DLL is missing. If several graphics applications crash, the driver or hardware path becomes more likely. If only one application crashes after its own update, repair or reinstall that application.

FAQ

Is igdumd32.dll malware?

The legitimate file is an Intel graphics-driver component. A filename alone is not proof of safety. Check its location, Properties information, digital signature, and the package that installed it. An identically named file in an unexpected folder should be scanned and investigated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a 32-bit DLL present on 64-bit Windows?

Many applications remain 32-bit and require 32-bit driver components. A 64-bit Windows installation can therefore contain 32-bit graphics files. igdumd32.dll and a 64-bit Intel graphics DLL are not interchangeable.

Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. The correct folder is managed by Windows and the driver installer. Install the complete matching driver instead.

Will reinstalling the game fix it?

It can, when the error occurs only in that game and its files are damaged. If multiple applications report the file, repair the Intel graphics driver first.

What should I provide when asking for help?

Include the exact error, application name, Windows version and architecture, Intel GPU model, file path, file version, current driver version, and the update or installation event that preceded the problem. Also state whether the file is reported missing or appears as the faulting module in a crash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the driver reinstall, Windows repair, application repair, and antivirus checks all fail, contact the computer manufacturer or application developer with that information. A clean Windows installation should be a last resort, not the first response to an igdumd32.dll error.
