Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →adammigrate.dll is a Microsoft Windows migration plugin for Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS), formerly called Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM). If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows and the related optional component rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
AD LDS is Microsoft’s application-oriented directory service. Microsoft previously called it ADAM, which explains the adam part of the filename. Windows identifies the component through the setup manifest name:
Microsoft-Windows-DirectoryServices-ADAM-Clientadammigrate.dll
The file is used by Windows Setup while migrating files, registry data, services, and optional components during a feature upgrade or repair. It is not a normal game runtime, Visual C++ library, DirectX file, or .NET dependency.
You may see it in locations such as:
%windir%System32migrationadammigrate.dll
Windows Setup can also stage a copy beneath:
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesReplacementManifests
The exact version, size, hash, and architecture depend on the Windows build and edition. There is no single value that can safely be used to validate every copy of the file.

Causes by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
Upgrade rolls back during SAFE_OS or MIGRATE_DATA |
A migration plugin, optional feature, driver, or Windows component failed | Run SetupDiag and inspect Panther logs |
Log contains 0x80070002 |
Windows could not find a required file or path | Repair the component store with DISM, then run SFC |
| AD LDS or RSAT was recently removed or disabled | Optional-feature state may be incomplete or stale | Check the feature and RSAT capability before changing it |
| Antivirus reports the file was quarantined | The protected file may have been removed or altered | Verify the path and signature, then repair Windows |
| A program claims the DLL is missing at launch | The message may be generic or incorrectly identifying the Windows component | Identify the actual process and check whether the failure is really during Windows Setup |
SetupDiag names adammigrate.dll, but the upgrade still fails after repair |
Another migration plugin, driver, or component may be fatal | Review the complete SetupDiag result and rollback logs |
A reference to adammigrate.dll does not prove that this file itself is missing. The plugin may have failed while processing another file, registry entry, manifest, or optional component.
Fix 1: Confirm whether this is a Windows Setup failure
First determine when the error occurs. If it appears while upgrading Windows, do not begin by searching for a replacement DLL.
Open File Explorer and check these locations:
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesRollback
Open setuperr.log in Notepad and search for:
adammigrate.dll
0x80070002
MIG Failure
MigrationAbortedDueToPluginFailure
A commonly reported pattern resembles:
MIG Failure while calling IPostApply->ApplySuccess for Plugin={
ServerPath="Microsoft-Windows-DirectoryServices-ADAM-Clientadammigrate.dll"
}
The 0x80070002 code means Windows could not find a required file or path. It does not establish that adammigrate.dll itself is the missing item.
Download and run Microsoft’s SetupDiag. It analyzes Windows upgrade logs and can classify failures as MigrationAbortedDueToPluginFailure or FindFatalPluginFailure.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Read the matching rule rather than assuming the first DLL named in the log is the root cause. SetupDiag may identify a driver, language pack, TPM issue, user-profile migration problem, or another plugin as the actual blocker.
Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store
Component-store corruption is the safest first repair when Windows cannot find a migration file or Setup reports 0x80070002.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry Windows Update or the feature upgrade.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired store. Microsoft documents the process in its DISM Windows image repair guide and SFC documentation.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it either found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more after DISM has completed.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files, use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: with the media drive letter and use the correct image index for the installed edition. Do not copy a DLL from the media directly into System32; the component store must manage the repair.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it detects in a free scan, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM and SFC remain the built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Check the AD LDS Windows feature
Some systems have an incomplete or stale AD LDS client state. Check whether Windows knows about the feature before attempting to disable it.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchOpen Terminal (Admin) and run:
DISM /Online /Get-Features | findstr /i "ADAM DirectoryServices"
If Windows lists the feature, note its exact state and name. On systems that expose the expected feature, an administrator can disable the client before retrying the upgrade:
DISM /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:DirectoryServices-ADAM-Client /NoRestart
Restart the computer and run the upgrade again.
The feature name is not available on every Windows edition or release. If DISM returns 0x800f080c, meaning the feature name is unknown, do not force the command and do not infer that Windows is damaged solely from that result.
You can also check graphically:
- Press Windows key, type Turn Windows features on or off, and open it.
- Look for an AD LDS, ADAM, or related directory-services entry.
- If it is present and you know the computer does not use it, clear the checkbox.
- Select OK and restart when prompted.
Do not disable AD LDS on a server or workstation that hosts directory applications without confirming its role first.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the RSAT AD DS and AD LDS tools
On supported Windows client editions, the administrative tools are delivered through an RSAT capability. To check the installed capabilities:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Terminal (Admin).
- Run:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online |
Where-Object Name -like 'RSAT*'
Look for:
Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
If the capability is needed but not installed, Microsoft documents this installation command:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online `
-Name Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
You can also use the graphical route:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for RSAT.
- Select RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools.
- Select Next, then Install.
If the capability is already installed but appears damaged, remove it only after confirming that no administrator or application depends on it:
Remove-WindowsCapability -Online `
-Name Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Restart, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then reinstall the capability if it is required. The capability name and availability vary by Windows edition.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and file integrity
If your security software reports that adammigrate.dll was quarantined:
- Open the security product.
- Open Quarantine, Protection history, or its equivalent.
- Check the original file path.
- Confirm that it belongs to a Windows migration directory or the expected component location.
- Check whether the file is digitally signed by Microsoft.
- Run a full malware scan before restoring anything.
Restore the file only when its path, signature, and Windows association are clear. If it is unsigned, modified, or located in a suspicious user-writable folder, do not restore it. Let Windows repair the component instead.
There is no need to assume that antivirus software commonly causes this problem. Treat quarantine as a case-specific possibility.

Fix 6: Update drivers when SetupDiag identifies one
adammigrate.dll may appear near a failed driver migration even when the driver is the real blocker. Use SetupDiag and the rollback logs to identify the device rather than updating every driver blindly.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retry the upgrade.
For a recently installed device, select Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began after that update. Obtain drivers from the device or computer manufacturer’s official support channel.
Recommended Free Tools
When several devices have unclear versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it finds for free, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace SetupDiag’s identification of the actual blocker.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 adammigrate.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows Setup migration plugin is loaded by the setup engine and is not necessarily self-registering.
A registration attempt may produce a DllRegisterServer error without repairing the component store, manifest, migration state, or setup failure. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance explains that these errors concern registration and permissions, not general DLL repair.
Why manual DLL copying is unsafe
Downloading or copying adammigrate.dll from another computer can introduce:
- A Windows-build mismatch
- An edition or architecture mismatch
- An invalid or altered file
- A missing component-store manifest
- A mismatch between the file and its servicing package
A 64-bit Windows installation can contain both 64-bit and 32-bit components, but there is no universal System32 or SysWOW64 copy that fixes every adammigrate.dll incident. Do not copy the file between those directories as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or official Windows installation media instead. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page provides the official source for installation media and supported repair-install paths.

If the upgrade still fails
A successful DISM and SFC repair does not guarantee that the upgrade will complete. Run SetupDiag again and compare its result with the final entries in:
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesRollback
Look for another migration plugin, driver, language pack, security product, or hardware compatibility issue. The first DLL named in a log is not always the fatal component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows remains healthy but the upgrade repeatedly rolls back, use current Microsoft installation media for an in-place repair installation. Choose the option to preserve files and applications where the installer permits it. System Restore is only a fallback when a suitable restore point predates the problem.
FAQ
Is adammigrate.dll malware?
The filename belongs to a genuine Microsoft Windows migration component. Location and signature still matter. A copy in a temporary download folder or an unsigned copy should be treated differently from the Microsoft-associated file in a Windows migration path.
Is this an AD DS file?
It is associated with the AD LDS client, formerly known as ADAM. AD LDS is related to Microsoft’s directory-services technology but is not the same thing as installing a full domain controller.
Does 0x80070002 prove that the DLL is missing?
No. It means Windows could not find a required file or path. The missing item may be another migration resource, manifest, registry-related path, or component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. There is no evidence that adammigrate.dll is a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game runtime dependency. Repair Windows and investigate the setup logs instead.
Can I delete adammigrate.dll?
No. Deleting a Windows migration component can make servicing and upgrades less reliable. Repair or remove the related optional component through Windows tools.
What is the safest fix for most users?
For an upgrade failure, run SetupDiag, then DISM and SFC. Check AD LDS or RSAT only if the feature is actually present. If the logs identify another plugin or driver, repair that component instead of focusing only on adammigrate.dll.
