You may see one of these messages when Windows starts, or when an older program or game opens:
- “The program can’t start because igfxhk.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because igfxhk.dll was not found.”
- “igfxhk.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading igfxhk.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “igfxhk.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “This application has failed to start because igfxhk.dll was not designed to run on Windows.”
The exact wording varies by application. A “module could not be found” message can also mean that another file required by igfxhk.dll is missing.

The 60-second answer
igfxhk.dll is a legitimate, legacy Intel graphics-driver component associated with Intel(R) Common User Interface. It is not an independent Windows runtime, and it is not normally repaired by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The safest fix is to identify the Intel graphics hardware in Device Manager and reinstall the matching graphics driver, preferably from the computer manufacturer. If that does not work, use Intel’s supported driver package and its clean-install option. Do not download an isolated copy of igfxhk.dll from a random DLL website.

Modern Intel graphics packages may not contain this older filename. The correct repair depends on the computer model, Intel graphics generation, Windows version, and whether the system uses switchable graphics.
What is igfxhk.dll
The file is described as igfxhk Module and is published by Intel Corporation. It belongs to Intel’s graphics user-interface and hotkey support rather than to Windows itself.
Historical Intel graphics installations placed the file in:
Recommended Free Tools
C:WindowsSystem32
That historical location does not prove that every current installation should have the file there. Newer Intel DCH driver packages use updated graphics components and may not install this legacy DLL.
Do not confuse igfxhk.dll with igfxHK.exe. Intel graphics packages have used both similarly named files. igfxHK.exe is an executable associated with Intel graphics-driver software, while igfxhk.dll is a dynamic-link library. Replacing one with the other cannot repair the error.
Historical file catalogs list different old versions and sizes, but those values are not a universal target for current Windows systems. Do not select a driver merely because a downloaded DLL has a familiar version number.
Why the error appears
The most common causes are:
- The Intel graphics driver was removed or partially updated.
- An antivirus product quarantined the file.
- A generic or incomplete driver does not match the computer’s hardware.
- Windows servicing or system files became damaged.
- An old application has an incomplete installation or obsolete dependency.
- A recent driver, Windows, or software change introduced the failure.
If the message appears for every startup, prioritize the graphics-driver fixes below. If only one old game or application reports the error, repair that application as well.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 1: Reinstall the computer manufacturer’s graphics driver
This is the best first repair for laptops, all-in-one computers, and systems with switchable graphics. Manufacturers often customize Intel graphics packages for hotkeys, display switching, power management, and the integrated display.
Identify the graphics hardware
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact Intel graphics name.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Open the Details tab if you need the hardware identification.
If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the normal Intel driver may be missing.
Download and install the correct package
- Go to the computer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Search using the exact model or serial number.
- Open the Drivers, Downloads, or Support section.
- Select your installed Windows version.
- Download the Graphics, Display, or Intel Graphics driver.
- Close open programs.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Accept the prompts and restart Windows when asked.
After restarting, open the affected application again. If the error has disappeared and the Intel adapter is listed normally in Device Manager, the repair worked.

Do not use a driver for a similar-looking model. Two laptops from the same product family can require different graphics packages.
If the manufacturer no longer provides a driver, use Intel’s official Download Center or Intel Driver & Support Assistant, where the hardware and operating system are supported. The generic Intel driver can overwrite OEM customizations, so keep the manufacturer’s package as the preferred choice for older systems.
Driver hunting becomes difficult when several packages look similar or Windows keeps selecting an older version. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version repair installs are optional, and the OEM driver remains the definitive choice for model-specific Intel hardware.
Fix 2: Perform a clean Intel graphics-driver installation
Use this step when reinstalling the normal OEM package does not restore the file, or when the previous installation was interrupted.
First download the correct driver package. Then:
- Close all applications.
- Run the Intel graphics installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Select Execute a clean installation if the installer provides that option.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart the computer.
A clean installation removes parts of the previous Intel graphics installation before installing the replacement. It can resolve mismatched files and incomplete updates.
If Intel’s installer refuses to run, return to the computer manufacturer’s driver. The generic package may not support an older chipset, legacy Windows release, switchable-graphics configuration, or OEM hotkey integration.
Check the result in Device Manager
After restarting:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the Intel adapter.
- Check the Device status box.
- Confirm that Windows reports the device is working properly.
If the adapter has a warning icon, open its Properties, select the General tab, and note the error code. That code can point to a hardware, driver, or installation problem rather than a missing DLL alone.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security scan may remove or quarantine a file after a driver update or system cleanup. Do not restore `igfxhk.dll solely because its name looks legitimate.
Verify all of the following before restoring anything:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The file came from the Intel graphics installation.
- Its location matches the driver package.
- Its digital signature identifies Intel Corporation.
- The Intel graphics device is present in Device Manager.
- A security scan does not identify a broader infection.
Review Microsoft Defender history
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Review the file path and detection details.
- Do not select Allow on device unless you have established that the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft explains the behavior of quarantined items in its Protection History documentation. A restored file may be detected again. Reinstalling the official graphics driver is safer than manually restoring a quarantined DLL because it replaces the complete, matching package.
If the file is signed incorrectly, located in an unexpected user-folder or temporary-folder path, or accompanied by other suspicious files, leave it quarantined and run a full Windows Security scan.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair Windows components. They do not necessarily reconstruct a third-party Intel driver file, so run them after addressing the graphics driver.
Run DISM first
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
Do not close the window while DISM is working. A successful completion indicates that Windows repaired or verified its component store. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates and run the command again, or use Microsoft’s recovery options.
Run SFC second
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. Restart Windows after a successful repair, then test the application.
Repeating SFC will not replace an Intel driver that was removed from the system. If the error remains, reinstall the graphics package rather than copying a DLL into System32.
When Windows repair involves repeated manual scans and unclear results, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system problems in a scan; its full-version repair is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the correct Intel graphics package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 5: Install pending Windows updates
A failed update can leave Windows and an older driver in an inconsistent state.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Test the affected application after the restart. If a recent update clearly preceded the problem, continue to System Restore rather than repeatedly installing unrelated runtimes.
Fix 6: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one application reports igfxhk.dll, its files or startup configuration may be damaged.
Try these options in order:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, then Repair, if available.
- Start the application and test it.
For a game, use its launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent command. If repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Do not copy igfxhk.dll into the application folder unless the application developer specifically requires an exact version. An application may load the wrong architecture or an incompatible file from its own folder.

If the program is very old, it may depend on an Intel graphics generation or Windows configuration that is no longer supported. Reinstalling the program can fix an incomplete installation, but it cannot make incompatible hardware components interchangeable.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver update, cleanup utility, or software installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove drivers and applications installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft provides additional guidance in its System Restore documentation.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 is designed for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that export DllRegisterServer. A graphics support DLL does not automatically become valid because it is registered.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 igfxhk.dll
unless the software vendor specifically instructs you to do so and confirms that the DLL supports self-registration. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance explains why architecture and self-registration matter.
For this error, reinstalling the matching graphics package is the appropriate repair.

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows and still require a 32-bit component. Conversely, a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a substitute.

Windows uses separate system locations and redirection rules, and the driver package determines which components are installed.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Use the graphics driver intended for the computer model and Windows architecture. Do not choose a file based only on its name, folder, reported size, or an old catalog listing.
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may belong to a different Intel graphics generation.
- It may be unsigned or altered.
- It may satisfy one error while leaving the damaged driver unresolved.
- It may cause a different application or graphics feature to fail.
There is no need to find a universal standalone igfxhk.dll download. Use the computer manufacturer’s support page first, followed by Intel’s official driver resources when appropriate.

FAQ
Is igfxhk.dll a Microsoft Windows file?
No. It is an Intel graphics-driver component associated with Intel(R) Common User Interface. Historical installations placed it in System32, but that does not make it a standalone Microsoft Windows component.
Is igfxhk.dll the same as igfxHK.exe?
No. They are different file types. Intel graphics packages have used both the DLL and the similarly named executable.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. Those runtimes do not normally supply igfxhk.dll. Reinstall them only when the specific application documents a dependency on one of them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I copy the DLL from another computer?
No. Similar Intel graphics hardware can require different driver generations, architectures, and supporting files. Reinstall the matching driver package instead.
Does SFC repair igfxhk.dll?
Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows components. igfxhk.dll belongs to Intel graphics software, so a missing or damaged copy usually requires an Intel driver reinstall.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency of igfxhk.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible with the application’s architecture. Reinstall the complete graphics package and check the application installation rather than registering the DLL manually.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Identify the Intel graphics adapter, install the computer manufacturer’s matching graphics driver, restart Windows, and repair the affected application if only that program still fails.
