What Valentin used Flight Simulator to learn
In a June 15, 2025 report, Jeuxvideo.com described how Valentin discovered the iniBuilds A350 add-on a few weeks before beginning professional A350 training. He used Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 as a way to explore the aircraft without the pressure of a formal training session. Valentin said he used the add-on to become familiar with the cockpit, screens, buttons and system pages. He also described practicing visual scanning and actions from memory, and trying simulated abnormal situations such as emergency descents, engine shutdowns and faults involving checklists. These are the activities he reported; they are not evidence that the add-on reproduces the aircraft or its procedures accurately enough for operational training.
His reported setup included a Logitech X-56 joystick, Saitek rudder pedals and throttle quadrant, a 34-inch Gigabyte G34WQCP monitor, an Intel Core i7-14700KF, 32 GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT. These were his personal equipment choices, not required or endorsed training hardware. The report listed the add-on at nearly €90 when it was published; that is a historical price, not a current quote.

What the consumer add-on could—and could not—stand in for
The report says Valentin’s airline and instructors did not ask him to use the add-on. He described it as unofficial and not approved by a training authority. He also reported desktop crashes and freezes, frozen instruments, some incomplete or inaccurate advanced automation and system behavior, and the absence of a HUD at the time. The story notes an inconsistency in simulated fault-checklist behavior as well. These are observations from the 2025 report, not a current software review; add-ons can change with updates.
Those limitations matter because familiarity is not the same as competence in an aircraft. A consumer simulation may let a user look around a cockpit and interact with virtual controls, but the account does not establish reliable transfer to real aircraft operation, nor does it establish that a simulated emergency is equivalent to practicing one under instructor supervision.

How Airbus distinguishes professional simulation
Airbus describes a full-flight simulator as a functional replica of a specific aircraft cockpit mounted on a multi-axis motion system, with representative switches, displays, sounds and feedback. It emphasizes that such a device “is not a sophisticated video game.” Airbus says Level D is the most advanced of the four simulator levels in its explainer and describes it as simulating flight-deck systems critical to training. Where regulations permit, experienced pilots may complete a type rating through zero-flight-time training without flying the real aircraft as part of that course. Airbus also says commercial airline pilots return to simulators approximately every six months for licensing and practice in normal and emergency procedures. That is Airbus’s general description; a pilot’s actual recurrent training and licensing requirements depend on the applicable regulator and operator. Airbus says full-flight simulators are evaluated and certified by authorities including EASA and the FAA.

A historical example illustrates the formal distinction: in April 2016, Airbus announced that its Miami A350 XWB full-flight simulator had received Level-D qualification from both the FAA and EASA. Airbus’s A350 training description says cockpit interface and full-flight simulation were brought into the curriculum early. Airbus Cockpit Experience (ACE), described as a 3D laptop-based cockpit tool, was introduced from day one for systems knowledge and standard operating procedures. Airbus describes different pathways for a type rating, rather than a universal route that removes aircraft flying. Its current Type Rating page defines base training as flight in the actual aircraft under a Type Rating Instructor. A zero-flight-time training course can replace base training in cases where the operator’s authorities require that course under national regulations; supervised line flying is also part of the pathway described. Airbus has also published pathway-specific reductions in training time: up to 78% for Cross Crew Qualification to the A350 for specified A320 Family, A340 and A380 pilot pathways, and around 60% compared with a full type-rating course for A330ceo/neo pilots qualifying on the A350, with no mandatory full-flight simulator time in the described pathway. Those figures apply to the particular transitions Airbus describes; they do not describe consumer flight simulation or establish a general shortcut for new A350 pilots. What this story says to aspiring pilots and flight-sim fans
- For basic orientation: Valentin found it useful to explore the cockpit layout, screens and controls before and during formal training.
- For procedures or emergencies: His account does not establish that a consumer add-on is accurate or reliable enough to teach aircraft procedures. Use instruction and approved training tools for those goals.
- For hardware: A joystick, pedals and throttle quadrant were part of Valentin’s setup, but the report does not make them requirements for learning or regulated training.
- For evidence: This is one pilot’s testimony. It offers a concrete example of how he used a game, not statistical evidence that consumer simulation improves qualification outcomes.
The useful boundary is straightforward: a game can offer a low-pressure way to become curious about a cockpit, while qualification and assessed operational skills belong to the formal training system. Valentin’s experience supports the first point as a personal account, not a claim that the two kinds of simulation are interchangeable.
