If I already owned a Nintendo Switch 2, I wouldn’t treat its accessory list as a shopping checklist. I’d choose based on how I play: a Pro Controller for frequent TV sessions, a fitted case and screen protector for travel, or an ergonomic grip if long handheld sessions bother my hands. They’re optional upgrades; the console’s included Joy-Con 2 controllers and grip already let you play.
What I’d prioritize—and when
| Accessory | Best fit | Problem it addresses | What to know first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | Frequent TV-mode play | A separate, traditional controller | Optional; the console already includes Joy-Con 2 controllers and a grip. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector | Travel and storage | Protecting the console and keeping a few items together | The official set includes a screen protector and cleaning cloth, with space for up to six game cards and two Joy-Con 2 straps. |
| Switch 2-specific ergonomic grip | Extended handheld play, if the console feels uncomfortable | Handheld comfort | Check the exact model’s fit and whether it can be used with your docking setup; a grip adds bulk. |
Nintendo’s official Australia/New Zealand catalog lists a Pro Controller, Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, carrying case with screen protector, and a larger all-in-one case. Its listed SRPs are regional AU/NZ prices, not U.S. prices, so check your local retailer for current pricing and availability. Nintendo’s Australia/New Zealand accessory catalog

1. Pro Controller for regular TV play
If I spent a lot of time playing Switch 2 on a television, I’d put a separate traditional controller first. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is the clearest fit for that use: it gives you a controller to pick up without using the Joy-Con 2 as a paired handheld-style setup. It isn’t a requirement for playing on a TV.
Tom’s Guide’s reviewer highlighted customizable back buttons and a headphone jack and recommended the controller for people who play substantially in TV mode. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict or a claim that every player needs those features. Tom’s Guide’s Switch 2 accessory recommendations

If you already own the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, you may not need to buy another controller immediately: Nintendo says the original Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 and can be charged through the Switch 2 dock using a USB cable. 2. A fitted case and screen protector for travel
If I carried the console outside the house, I’d choose a case made for Switch 2 rather than assume an older case fits. Nintendo’s official carrying case and screen protector set includes the protector and a cleaning cloth, plus storage for up to six game cards and two Joy-Con 2 straps. That combination is useful if you want basic screen protection and a place to stow a small number of accessories while traveling. Nintendo’s Australia/New Zealand accessory catalog

Other options depend on what you want the case to do. A grip would be my third purchase, and only if I found handheld sessions uncomfortable. It can change how the console sits in your hands, but it also makes the setup bulkier. TechRadar discusses the Genki Attack Vector as a handheld-grip option and notes that added bulk; before choosing any grip, check the specific Switch 2 model’s fit and how it works with your dock and case. If handheld play already feels fine, skip this upgrade. Comfort is personal, and a grip is not a must-have just because one is available.

Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip
The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is a separate accessory, not something you need just to start playing. Nintendo describes it as a controller grip and charging station with custom-mappable GL/GR buttons. Consider it if its charging function or button layout solves a problem for you; otherwise, the included Joy-Con 2 and grip already provide a way to play. - Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
A replacement for the included power and docking setup
Don’t assume original Switch hardware will substitute for Switch 2’s core setup. Nintendo says the original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2, and the original Switch AC adapter cannot provide Switch 2 TV mode. That compatibility distinction matters if you’re considering buying used gear or reusing accessories you already own. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for Switch and Switch 2

For expanding Switch 2 game storage, Nintendo specifies microSD Express. Will original Switch accessories work?
Some will, some won’t, and the answer depends on the accessory. Nintendo says original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 but cannot attach to the console; they also need a compatible charger. The original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly, while the original Switch dock and AC adapter cannot provide the Switch 2 docking and TV-mode setup described above. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for the specific item rather than assuming that all original Switch accessories carry over. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for Switch and Switch 2
How I’d choose with a tight budget
- Mostly play on a TV: use the included controllers first, then consider the Switch 2 Pro Controller if you want a separate traditional controller. If you own an original Switch Pro Controller, check whether wireless pairing meets your needs before buying another.
- Take the console out: prioritize a Switch 2-fitted case and screen protector. The official set includes both, along with a cleaning cloth and storage for game cards and straps.
- Play handheld for long stretches: try the included setup first. Buy a compatible ergonomic grip only if comfort is a real issue and you’re comfortable with the added bulk.
- Before buying storage or older gear: check the compatibility details. Switch 2 game storage calls for microSD Express, and not every original Switch accessory works the same way on the new console.
I would not buy all three accessories by default. Start with the one that addresses how you actually use the console, and leave the rest until a specific need shows up.
