imadmui.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Windows Remote Installation UI. If imadmui.dll is missing, Windows or an administration tool may fail while opening Active Directory Users and Computers, managing Windows Deployment Services, or starting an older program that expects the component.
This is not normally a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or gaming-runtime file. It is associated with older Remote Installation Services and Windows Deployment Services administration workflows, including legacy Active Directory Users and Computers features.

When does it happen?
Does the message appear when Windows starts, when opening an.mscconsole, while managing WDS, or only when launching one older program? -
What does the message say?
Common reported variants include: -
imadmui.dll was not found The program can't start because imadmui.dll is missing from your computerError loading imadmui.dllThe specified module could not be foundCannot register imadmui.dllimadmui.dll is missing or corrupted
These messages do not all mean the same thing. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency even when the named DLL is present.
-
Is the computer being used for WDS, RIS, or ADUC administration?
This is the most important question. If the answer is no, the error may come from an old third-party program that references a legacy Windows component incorrectly.Recommended: Update Every Outdated Driver on Your PC in One Scan - Free →Recommended: PC Feels Slow? Is the operating system 32-bit or 64-bit?
PressWindows key + R, typemsinfo32, and press Enter. Check System Type. On 64-bit Windows,System32contains 64-bit system components, whileSysWOW64contains 32-bit components.
Do not download a replacement DLL yet. First identify the component and repair Windows or the relevant server tools.
What imadmui.dll does
imadmui.dll is reported as Windows Remote Installation UI, published by Microsoft Corporation. Historically, it supplied the administration interface associated with Remote Installation Services and Windows Deployment Services.
That legacy integration could include:
- The Remote Install tab in Active Directory Users and Computers
- Computer prestaging workflows
- Administrative UI components for older WDS or RIS environments
- MMC-based management functions that depend on the Windows Remote Installation interface
Microsoft describes Windows Deployment Services as the successor to Remote Installation Services and documents it as a Windows Server deployment technology. WDS is not a general-purpose runtime that every Windows PC needs.
The file may not be installed on a modern Windows client computer. Current Microsoft RSAT documentation also lists WDS tools as unavailable through ordinary Windows client Feature on Demand installation. Therefore, installing standard RSAT on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is not guaranteed to restore this particular legacy component.
Fix 1: Restart and reproduce the error
If the error appeared once after an update, shutdown, or interrupted installation, restart Windows before making changes.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Select Power.
- Choose Restart.
- Open the same application or administration console again.
If the error returns consistently, continue with the checks below. A restart does not repair a missing component, but it can complete pending servicing operations and release a file locked by an MMC process.
Fix 2: Check whether the file and its language resource exist
Use File Explorer to inspect the normal Windows component location.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Press
Windows key + E. - Select the address bar.
- Enter:

%SystemRoot%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
imadmui.dll.
On a legacy installation, the associated language resource may also be required. Check the language folder used by the system, commonly:
%SystemRoot%System32en-US
Look for:
imadmui.dll.mui
Do not copy a file from another computer simply because it has the same name. The DLL and its .mui file should match the same Windows Server build, language, architecture, and intended component.
If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A missing signature, an unexpected location, or a copy located in an application folder rather than a normal Windows path deserves further investigation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate system component, although the filename alone does not prove that this happened.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the result.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an item that references
imadmui.dll, if one exists. - Check the detected file path and detection details.
Only restore a file after confirming all of the following:
- The path is a normal Windows or approved server-tools location.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- The file came from a matching Windows installation or approved administrative deployment source.
- Your organization’s security policy allows restoration.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the file is legitimate and has been verified, follow the Windows Security prompt to allow it on the device. If the path or signature is suspicious, leave it quarantined and continue with Windows repair instead.

Fix 4: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
A missing or corrupted protected Windows component should be repaired with Microsoft’s servicing tools. Run DISM first, then System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
The scan may pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is working.
A successful result indicates that the component store was repaired or that no repair was needed. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, connect to Windows Update and try the command again. If it still fails, use installation media or another matching repair source rather than downloading an individual DLL.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. Persistent failures may require a matching repair source or an in-place Windows repair.
Microsoft’s documented repair sequence is DISM followed by SFC. Do not use a registry cleaner as a substitute.

Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the WDS and administration components
If the error appears in WDS, ADUC, or an older Windows Server administration workflow, repair the related role or management tools instead of treating the DLL as an independent download.
Check installed Windows Server roles
On Windows Server:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Remove Roles and Features.
- Select the target server.
- Review the Server Roles page.
- Check whether Windows Deployment Services is installed.
- Cancel the wizard if you only needed to inspect the configuration.
You can also inspect available features from an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-WindowsFeature
If WDS is installed but damaged, remove and reinstall the role only after checking your deployment configuration and organizational change procedures. Removing a role can affect boot images, install images, deployment shares, and server operations.
To install WDS with its management tools on a supported Windows Server release, Microsoft documents this command:
Install-WindowsFeature -Name WDS -IncludeManagementTools
The exact feature name and available options depend on the Windows Server version. If the command reports that the feature is unavailable, do not force a package from another release. Use the matching Server installation media and documentation for that operating system.
After role repair:
- Restart the server if requested.
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Tools.
- Open the relevant WDS or Active Directory management console.
- Test the operation that originally failed.
Windows client and RSAT limitation
On Windows 10 or Windows 11 client editions, standard RSAT installation does not necessarily provide the legacy WDS administration component. If the affected console was copied from an older Server installation, or if a client computer is being used to manage an older environment, verify that the administration tools match the operating system and architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not assume that installing a current client RSAT package will recreate every Server-era Remote Installation feature.
Fix 6: Restore the matching legacy DLL and MUI file
Use this procedure only when all of the following are true:
- The error occurs in a legacy WDS, RIS, or ADUC administration workflow.
- You have verified that the component should be installed.
- Windows repair or role repair did not restore it.
- You have an approved source from the same Windows Server build, language, and architecture.
The matching files may include:
imadmui.dll
imadmui.dll.mui
The language resource commonly belongs in a language-specific folder such as:
%SystemRoot%System32en-US
The correct location depends on the operating system and the process using the component. On 64-bit Windows, do not assume that a 32-bit DLL belongs in System32. System32 is the standard directory for 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
After restoring verified matching files, restart the relevant MMC or ADUC process. If the legacy guidance for your environment requires registration, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32imadmui.dll
A successful registration message indicates that the DLL accepted the registration operation. It does not prove that the file is the correct build or that every dependency is present.

If regsvr32 reports that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found, the DLL may not be registerable in that way, or it may be the wrong file. If it reports that the module could not be loaded, check the file path, architecture, dependencies, and language resource. Do not respond by downloading another random copy.
Registration cannot:
- Recreate a missing DLL
- Repair a corrupted binary
- Supply a missing
.muiresource - Fix a missing dependency
- Convert a 32-bit component into a 64-bit component
- Make files from different Windows builds compatible
Fix 7: Check architecture and the program that loads the DLL
A 32-bit and 64-bit copy of the same-named DLL are not interchangeable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the application architecture and the Windows architecture:
- Press
Windows key + I. - Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
For a third-party application:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Select the Details tab.
- Start the affected program.
- Locate its process.
- Compare its behavior with the Windows architecture and the administration tools it is using.
A copied ADUC or MMC console can fail when its dependencies come from a different architecture. Restore the complete matching administration toolset rather than replacing only imadmui.dll.
If the error appears only in one third-party application, repair or reinstall that application from its official vendor source. The program may be incorrectly referencing an old Windows component, and replacing a system DLL will not necessarily correct its configuration.
Fix 8: Update Windows and inspect optional drivers only if relevant
Install pending Windows updates before escalating.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test the affected application again.
Drivers are not a primary explanation for an imadmui.dll error. However, if the failure began after a broader system update or affects server hardware management as well, check Device Manager.

Do not use Device Manager to replace imadmui.dll; it does not manage this Windows component.
Manually checking every device for outdated drivers is tedious and can leave you guessing which change mattered. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and show available updates, while installation through the full version is optional; driver updates are not a substitute for repairing WDS, ADUC, or Windows components.
What not to do
Avoid these common but unsafe approaches:
- Do not download
imadmui.dllfrom an arbitrary DLL repository. - Do not copy an unknown DLL into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder. - Do not replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit file, or the reverse.
- Do not mix the DLL and
.muifile from different Windows builds or languages. - Do not run
regsvr32repeatedly against unrelated copies. - Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears in the error.
- Do not use a registry cleaner to repair a missing protected component.
- Do not disable antivirus protection just to force an unverified DLL into Windows.
Random replacements can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, fail because a dependency is missing, or create servicing problems. The safe sources are Windows component repair, matching Windows Server installation media, approved organizational deployment images, Windows Update, Server Manager, and official Microsoft role-management documentation.
If the error continues
If DISM, SFC, and role repair do not resolve the problem, collect more evidence before replacing files.
- Open Event Viewer.
- Select Windows Logs.
- Check Application and System around the failure time.
- Look for side-by-side, application error, servicing, or module-load events.
- Record the executable path and the failing module.
- Confirm whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether
imadmui.dll.muiexists in the matching language directory. - Review recent role removal, RSAT changes, antivirus actions, disk cleanup, and Windows updates.
- Test the same administration task from a known-good, matching management workstation if one is available.
If the error is limited to an old application, reinstall that application from its official source. If the entire Windows installation has broader component failures, consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair using matching installation media.
Frequently asked questions
Is imadmui.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. It is identified as Windows Remote Installation UI and is associated with Microsoft Windows, WDS, RIS, and older Active Directory administration workflows. Its name alone does not prove that every copy on a computer is genuine. Verify the path and Microsoft digital signature.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC need imadmui.dll?
No such assumption is safe. The file is associated with legacy Windows Server and deployment administration, and it may not be installed on a modern Windows client that does not use those tools.
Is imadmui.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. There is no verified reason to install those runtimes for this file. Start with Windows component repair and identify the program requesting it.
Do I need imadmui.dll.mui?
Possibly. Legacy WDS and ADUC workflows can require the matching language resource file. A main DLL that exists without its correct .mui file may still leave the administration interface broken.
Should I run regsvr32?
Only for the legacy WDS, RIS, or ADUC administration case when the matching DLL is already present and approved guidance for that environment calls for registration. It is not a universal missing-DLL fix.
Can I download a standalone Microsoft copy?
There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download page for imadmui.dll. Use Windows repair, a matching Windows Server role installation, approved installation media, or an official Microsoft update source instead.
Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible module. Architecture mismatches, missing language resources, damaged installations, and incorrect application paths can produce similar messages. Check Event Viewer and repair the complete component rather than replacing one file blindly.
