“This application failed to start because trs.dll was not found.” The trs.dll error usually means an older ABBYY application cannot load its own program component.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you see:
- FineReader or ABBYY Lingvo fails immediately: Repair or reinstall that ABBYY application first.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring or replacing anything.
- The program was moved, cleaned up, or partially uninstalled: Restore the original installation layout by reinstalling the same product.
- The error mentions another DLL or a runtime: Troubleshoot that named dependency separately. Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET does not directly replace
trs.dll. - The file exists but will not load: Check its location, architecture, signature, and companion files. A missing dependency can produce the same error.
- Several Windows components are also failing: Use DISM and SFC after repairing the ABBYY installation.
trs.dllis outside an ABBYY folder or is detected as suspicious: Do not restore it blindly. Scan the system and reinstall the legitimate application from trusted media.
What is trs.dll
trs.dll is a Windows dynamic-link library associated with older ABBYY software. Public file metadata describes it as ABBYY FullText Retrieval Engine, a component of FineReader developed by ABBYY and BIT Software.
The recorded file is a 32-bit component. Third-party inventories also show trs.dll in some ABBYY Lingvo installations, where it is described as the ABBYY Text Retrieval System Engine. That does not prove that every FineReader or Lingvo release used the same file, so match the repair to the exact application installed on your computer.
It is not a Windows system file. It should normally be stored beside the legacy ABBYY executable, together with the other files installed by that product. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is therefore not the normal fix.

Current ABBYY FineReader Engine packages use a newer, complete runtime layout and should not be assumed to contain this historical DLL. If you need a current ABBYY product, obtain its complete licensed package rather than extracting an individual file.
Common reported variants include:
- “The file trs.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: trs.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading trs.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because trs.dll is missing from your computer.”
These messages are commonly published variants, not a confirmed ABBYY error catalogue.
Fix 1: Identify the ABBYY program that is failing
Before replacing anything, identify the program that requested the DLL. This prevents you from repairing the wrong ABBYY product or mixing files from different releases.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and message. It may identify FineReader, Lingvo, or another older ABBYY application.
If the error appears when opening a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Note the application folder and executable name.
- Do not change the target yet.
You can also check the event entry:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an Error recorded at the time the ABBYY program failed.
- Check whether the event names
trs.dllor a second missing module.
Check the file location
If a copy of trs.dll already exists:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search for
trs.dllonly inside the suspected ABBYY installation folder. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review Location, Size, Details, and Digital Signatures, if available.
- Do not move, rename, or replace it yet.
A file in the ABBYY program directory is more consistent with a legitimate installation than a copy in a random download folder, a temporary directory, or a Windows system directory. Location alone is not proof of authenticity, so scan suspicious files with Windows Security.
Fix 2: Repair FineReader or ABBYY Lingvo
Repair is the safest first action because it can restore missing program files without requiring you to find an individual DLL.
Repair through Windows 11 Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected ABBYY program.
- Select the three-dot button beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Start FineReader or Lingvo again.
If the application opens, try the operation that previously caused the error. A successful repair should restore normal startup without placing trs.dll in a Windows system folder.
Repair through Control Panel
Traditional desktop installers may not show an Advanced options page.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the ABBYY program in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If there is no Repair option, choose Change and look for a maintenance or repair choice. Do not remove shared files manually from the ABBYY directory.
Fix 3: Reinstall the exact ABBYY product
If repair is unavailable or does not restore trs.dll, reinstall the same FineReader or Lingvo product and, where possible, the same release and architecture.
Uninstall the damaged installation
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected ABBYY application.
- Select its three-dot button.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the ABBYY uninstaller.
- Restart Windows.
For older installations:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the ABBYY program.
- Click Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the prompts and restart when finished.
Use the original ABBYY installer, licensed installation media, an organization’s licensed deployment share, or an official ABBYY distribution intended for your product. You may need the original serial number or activation details.
Do not install a similarly named FineReader or Lingvo version just because it contains an apparently matching file. A legacy 32-bit ABBYY program needs its matching 32-bit components in its own installation directory. A DLL from another release may have different exports, companion files, or dependencies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After installation:
- Start the ABBYY application from its normal shortcut.
- Confirm that it opens without the
trs.dllmessage. - Check the installation folder if you need to verify that the file was restored.
- Test scanning, recognition, search, or the specific feature that originally failed.
If the installer itself reports a missing dependency, record that new filename. It may identify the actual problem more accurately than the original trs.dll message.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate legacy file, especially after a definition update or a change in the application folder.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created when the ABBYY program stopped working.
- Expand any entry associated with the ABBYY installation.
- Confirm the file path and detection name.
Only restore a file when all of the following are true:
- It came from the legitimate ABBYY installation directory.
- The ABBYY program was installed from trusted media.
- The file is not a newly created copy in a temporary or download folder.
- A security scan does not identify the file as malicious.
- You have confirmed that the file belongs to the exact product and architecture.
Microsoft notes that restoring a threat can cause Windows Security to detect it again, and Protection history does not retain entries indefinitely. Reinstalling the application from trusted ABBYY media is preferable to manually restoring an isolated quarantined binary.
If the file is outside an ABBYY directory, unsigned when other files from the same installation are signed, recently created without a clear reason, or detected repeatedly, do not restore it. Run a full Windows Security scan and remove the suspicious copy.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that trs.dll itself is absent. Windows may find trs.dll but fail to load one of the other libraries it requires.
Start the ABBYY application again and read the complete message carefully. If it names another DLL or a runtime, troubleshoot that component instead of repeatedly copying trs.dll.
Visual C++ Redistributable
Install a Visual C++ package only when the error identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime or the ABBYY vendor’s installation instructions require it. Microsoft provides separate packages for x86, x64, and ARM64 applications. Because the recorded trs.dll component is 32-bit, an old 32-bit ABBYY program may require the x86 runtime, even on 64-bit Windows.

A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs its own 32-bit program files and compatible dependencies. The recorded trs.dll build is 32-bit, so do not assume that a 64-bit replacement is appropriate.
Check the application path:
- Right-click the ABBYY shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Review Target and Start in.
- Confirm that both point to the intended installation.
- If the folder was moved, restore the original layout or reinstall the program.
A copy in System32 may not help because the application loader normally searches the application directory and expects companion ABBYY modules there. On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 have specific loader behavior; they are not interchangeable storage locations for arbitrary DLLs.
Fix 7: Reinstall or update a related driver only when indicated
A scanner or capture device can prevent FineReader from completing a scan, but a driver problem normally does not explain an isolated missing trs.dll message. Use Device Manager only when the error occurs during device access or Windows reports a driver problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or Uninstall Device only when appropriate.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver supplied by the device manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.
Do not replace trs.dll with a scanner driver or assume that updating every driver will repair an ABBYY installation.

Use these commands when other Windows components are also malfunctioning, not as the primary treatment for one missing third-party ABBYY DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command normally recreates an isolated third-party file such as trs.dll.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the commands again only when Windows itself continues to show corruption. Do not interpret a clean SFC result as proof that the ABBYY installation is intact.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show identified system issues in one scan, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the parent ABBYY program remains the correct fix for its missing DLL.
Why you should not download trs.dll separately
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may be modified or bundled with malware.
- It may belong to a different FineReader or Lingvo release.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may require companion ABBYY files that are also missing.
- Copying it to
System32may not place it where the application loader expects it. - The original installation may be damaged in more places than one DLL.
Do not run regsvr32 trs.dll as a generic repair command. Normal runtime DLLs do not necessarily expose COM registration functions, so registration can produce another error without repairing the application. ABBYY documentation discusses registration for specific products and components, not arbitrary legacy engine DLLs. Use regsvr32 only when documentation for that exact ABBYY product explicitly requires it.
If reinstalling still fails
Record the following before seeking further support:
- The complete error text.
- The ABBYY product name and version shown in the installer or shortcut.
- Your Windows version.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The full path where
trs.dllwas found or expected. - The name of any second missing DLL.
- The time the failure began.
- Whether antivirus activity, cleanup software, an update, or moving the program preceded it.
If only one Windows account is affected, test the program with a clean user profile. Use System Restore only when the problem clearly began after a recent system change. It can roll back system files and settings, but it does not remove personal files or recreate every application file.

Is trs.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with older ABBYY software and should normally remain in the ABBYY application directory.
Which program installed trs.dll?
The file is identified with older FineReader installations. It also appears in inventories for some ABBYY Lingvo installations. The exact release range is not confirmed by current ABBYY documentation, so identify the calling program before repairing it.
Is trs.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The recorded build is 32-bit. Use the matching ABBYY product installation rather than assuming a 64-bit replacement exists.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Copying a third-party ABBYY DLL to System32 or SysWOW64 can create a path or architecture mismatch and does not restore the rest of the application.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Only if the complete error names one of those runtimes as the missing dependency. They do not directly replace trs.dll.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. Use registration only if instructions for the exact ABBYY product explicitly require it.
How do I know whether the file is malware?
Check its location, publisher information, signature if present, creation history, and Windows Security results. A trs.dll outside an ABBYY installation folder or one repeatedly detected by security software should not be restored blindly.
What is the safest fix?
Repair or reinstall the exact FineReader or Lingvo installation using legitimate ABBYY media. Do not substitute a lone DLL from an unrelated source.
