imapi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by applications that prepare and burn CD, DVD, and Blu-ray media. If Windows reports that imapi.dll is missing or cannot load, do not download a replacement DLL first: identify the calling program, check the file path and architecture, then repair Windows or that application.
What this file actually does
imapi.dll belongs to the Image Mastering API, or IMAPI. It provides Windows functionality that applications can use to stage and burn optical-disc images.

IMAPI 2.0 is included natively from Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 onward. Older Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems required Microsoft’s separate IMAPIv2.0 update package.

The application showing the error may be only the caller. It does not necessarily own the Windows copy of the file.

On 64-bit Windows, the usual locations are:
%windir%System32imapi.dll
%windir%SysWOW64imapi.dll
Despite its name, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
Diagnose the error before changing anything
The exact wording helps distinguish a missing file from a dependency, architecture, or application problem.

Write down the complete error, the program name, the path shown in the message, and when the problem began. Note whether it followed Windows Update, cleanup software, antivirus action, an application removal, or a failed installation.

Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair system files
This is the safest first repair when imapi.dll is missing from the Windows directories or several programs are affected.
Install pending updates
- Press
Win+I. - Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not insist on a restart.
- Test the affected program again.
If the error remains, repair the component store and protected system files.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the repair source used by Windows component repair. SFC then checks and replaces protected system files. The official procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guide.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. Restart and test the original program.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not download a replacement from the internet. Run DISM again, review the CBS log referenced in the result, and consider an in-place Windows repair or another supported recovery option.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting unnecessarily slow. Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows itself works and only one program reports the error, the program’s installation is the stronger suspect.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings with
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features, depending on your Windows build.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If the application has its own launcher, use its Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity of game files command instead. This restores files from the application’s controlled source rather than mixing an unknown DLL into its folder.
If repair does not help:
- Close the application.
- Uninstall it from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the application’s developer or publisher.
- Install the current supported release.
- Start the program and test again.
Do not replace the Windows copy of imapi.dll with a file supplied by an application unless that developer explicitly documents an app-local copy and the required architecture.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs a 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit application needs a 64-bit DLL. One architecture does not substitute for the other.
On 64-bit Windows, check these locations in File Explorer by entering each path in the address bar:

%windir%SysWOW64imapi.dll
Do not infer the architecture from the folder name. System32 is normally the 64-bit location on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 is normally the 32-bit location.

Check the application’s architecture in its documentation or installation directory. If the error shows an application path under Program Files (x86), that often indicates a 32-bit application, although the path alone is not conclusive.
A 32-bit program can fail even when a valid 64-bit imapi.dll exists. Conversely, manually copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit location can create a different loader error. Repair the application or Windows using a matching official source instead.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. A missing file can also be evidence of malware damage, so do not restore it solely because its name is imapi.dll.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open any detection related to
imapi.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, publisher information, and action taken.
- Run a scan before deciding whether to restore anything.
Restore or allow the file only when its original path and Microsoft digital signature show that it is a genuine Windows component and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available actions.

If malware is suspected, disconnect the affected machine from untrusted networks, run a full Windows Security scan, and repair Windows afterward with DISM and SFC. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force an application to start.
Fix 5: Check the file path and dependencies
A file with the correct name outside the Windows system directories is not automatically genuine. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, and verify that the signer is Microsoft when the file is supposed to be a Windows component.
A loader message can name imapi.dll even when a dependency of that DLL is the real problem. Microsoft documents this behavior in its LoadLibraryEx documentation.

If the file exists but still cannot load:
- Record its complete path.
- Check its digital signature.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Repair the application that reports the error.
- Check whether the application directory contains another copy of
imapi.dll. - Avoid deleting or replacing files until the application’s documentation identifies that copy as intentional.
Windows DLL search behavior also creates security risks when an application loads files from unsafe directories. Microsoft’s DLL security guidance explains why copying a DLL beside an executable is not a harmless universal fix.
Fix 6: Remove a stale startup reference
If the error appears immediately after signing in, but the affected application is no longer installed, an orphaned startup entry may be calling a deleted file.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable only the entry clearly associated with the removed program.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Settings → Apps → Startup. For scheduled tasks:
- Open Start and type
Task Scheduler. - Open Task Scheduler.
- Review Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect entries associated with the removed application.
- Disable or remove an orphaned task only when you can identify its owner confidently.
Do not delete registry entries blindly. If the program is still installed, repair or uninstall it properly instead.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
Alternatively, open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. It is not a substitute for malware cleanup or an application reinstall. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process.

Fix 8: Update a relevant driver only when evidence points there
A display, chipset, or storage-driver reinstall is not a normal fix for a missing imapi.dll. Consider it only if Device Manager shows a related device problem or the error began with broader hardware symptoms.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device error.
- Open the Driver tab and review the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart and test.

Running this command is commonly suggested for DLL errors:
regsvr32 imapi.dll
It is generally not appropriate here. regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it does not restore a missing Windows component. It may return an entry-point or architecture error. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation.
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download pages may provide the wrong Windows build, wrong architecture, corrupted content, or a tampered file. Even a file with the right name may be loaded from the wrong directory and create DLL-preloading risk. It often fails to repair the dependency or application that caused the error.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Security, System Restore, and the affected application’s developer-issued installer instead. Manual replacement is appropriate only in a controlled recovery process using a verified matching Windows source and architecture after Windows identifies a specific unrepaired protected file.

Is imapi.dll safe?
A genuine Microsoft copy in the expected Windows directory is a legitimate Windows component. Verify its path and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is imapi.dll a separate runtime I need to install?
Normally, no. Modern Windows supplies IMAPI as part of the operating system. Windows XP and Server 2003 were historical exceptions that required Microsoft’s IMAPIv2.0 update package.
Why does only one application fail?
The application may be damaged, incompatible, or loading a dependency incorrectly. Repair or reinstall that application before replacing Windows files.
Will installing a Windows Feature fix it?
Usually not. Optional Windows Features do not provide a general replacement mechanism for imapi.dll. Do not enable unrelated features at random. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
