If imekrmbx.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start an older application or installer that depends on Microsoft Korean IME 2002. The correct fix is to identify that parent program and repair its language, Office, or application files rather than copying an arbitrary DLL into a Windows folder.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, note:
- Which program shows the error: an Office component, installer, game, launcher, or older utility
- When it appears: at Windows startup, when launching one program, during installation, or when using Korean input
- Whether the program is old: software designed for Windows XP or Office 2003 is especially relevant
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit:
imekrmbx.dllis reported as a 32-bit Microsoft DLL - What changed first: an uninstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, backup restore, Windows update, or application update
- Whether Korean input is actually required: a current Windows Korean IME is not automatically a replacement for this legacy component
This information determines whether the missing file belongs to the application, an Office language feature, an older Windows language installation, or a damaged Windows component.
What is imekrmbx.dll?
imekrmbx.dll is associated with Microsoft Korean IME 2002, an older Korean Input Method Editor from Microsoft. An IME converts keyboard input into Korean characters and provides language-specific composition and input behavior.
The file is a Microsoft application or component DLL, not a general-purpose runtime redistributable. It is also not evidence that a modern application needs the current Windows Korean IME. The exact file is strongly associated with Windows XP-era language support and older Microsoft software.

Microsoft’s documentation identifies Korean Input System (IME 2002) as an XP input method. Windows XP could require additional East Asian language files from the Windows installation disc or a network installation source before the Korean input system could be added. See Microsoft’s Installing and Using Input Method Editors documentation for that historical process.
The file is reported as 32-bit, or Win32. A 32-bit application generally needs a compatible 32-bit dependency. Installing a 64-bit replacement does not solve a 32-bit application dependency, and manually moving files between System32 and SysWOW64 can make troubleshooting harder.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a current Microsoft Korean IME, but that does not prove they include this legacy DLL. Adding Korean today installs current language features, not necessarily the historical imekrmbx.dll expected by an old program.
Error messages you may see
The wording depends on which executable attempted to load the file. Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because imekrmbx.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because imekrmbx.dll was not found.”
- “This application failed to start because imekrmbx.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting imekrmbx.dll.”
- “Error loading imekrmbx.dll.”
- “imekrmbx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found imekrmbx.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies. The full executable path and the program that triggered the message are therefore more useful than the message alone.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that displays the error
This is the best first fix when the error appears only for one application.
Use the application’s repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select its menu button, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Not every traditional desktop application provides a Repair button. If the option is absent, use the application’s original installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Maintenance.
Reinstall from trusted installation media
If repair fails:
- Save any application data that the program stores locally.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its original Microsoft media, the organization that supplied it, or another trusted source provided with the software.
- Start the program and check whether the DLL error returns.
Do not assume that reinstalling Windows or adding a language pack will restore an application-local copy. If the program installed its own copy of the legacy IME component, the application installer is the correct source.
Microsoft provides additional guidance for repairing programs that cannot be installed or removed.
If the program is a game
If a game launcher reports the error:
- Open the launcher.
- Select the game.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify, Verify files, Repair, or an equivalent option.
- Wait for the launcher to compare and restore its installed files.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
File verification is preferable to downloading imekrmbx.dll separately because it checks the files expected by that particular game version. If verification does not restore the file, uninstall and reinstall the game from the launcher’s official library.
Fix 2: Repair an Office or proofing-language installation
An error appearing while starting an old Office program, running Office setup, or using proofing tools may point to a damaged Office language component.
Historical Office 2003 Proofing Tools records include Imekrmbx.dll, so an Office-related failure should be repaired through Office maintenance rather than treated as a generic Windows DLL problem.

- Choose Modify or Advanced options, depending on the entry.
- Try Quick Repair first.
- If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair when available.
- Restart Windows and test Office.
For an older Office installation, run the original Office setup program and choose Repair. If the setup program cannot run on the current Windows release, use the original installation media in a compatible environment rather than obtaining an isolated DLL from an archive.
If you do not use the old Office language or proofing feature, removing the obsolete add-in or replacing the old Office installation may be more reliable than preserving a discontinued component.
Fix 3: Restore Korean language support on Windows XP
This applies only to an actual Windows XP installation or an old XP environment. It is not a guaranteed method for installing the legacy DLL on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

- Return to Regional and Language Options > Languages.
- Select Details.
- Choose Add.
- Select Korean or Korean Input System (IME 2002).
- Apply the change and test the application again.
If this is a virtual machine or an archived XP installation, use installation media that matches that Windows installation. Do not mix language files from unrelated Windows releases.
Fix 4: Add the current Korean IME on Windows 10 or 11
Use this step when the real goal is Korean typing, not when an old application specifically requests imekrmbx.dll.
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Time & language > Language & region.
- On Windows 10, select Time & language > Language.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for and select Korean.
- Choose the required language features.
- Select Install.
- Sign out or restart if Windows requests it.
- Switch input languages from the taskbar and test Korean typing.
Microsoft explains the current implementation in its Korean IME guide, and provides general Windows language-pack instructions.
Installing Korean through Settings does not promise to install imekrmbx.dll. It installs the current Microsoft IME and language features. If a legacy program still reports the missing file, repair that program or run it in an appropriate older environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have quarantined a file belonging to an old program. This is more likely if the error began immediately after a scan or cleanup.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any event that references the affected program or file.
- Check the detected file path, detection name, and originating application.
- Restore the file only if the original program and file are trusted.
- Reinstall or repair the parent application afterward if possible.
Do not restore a file simply because its name matches the error. A suspicious executable requesting an old DLL may indicate a damaged installer, an abandoned startup entry, or unwanted software. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how to review and handle detections.
Protection History retains events for only a limited period, so the absence of an old quarantine record does not prove that antivirus software was not involved.
Fix 6: Repair Windows component and system-file corruption
Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated programs fail, Windows itself reports damaged files, or the problem began after a system update or storage problem. These commands may not restore a DLL that belonged only to an old application or optional Office feature.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- At the prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The sequence repairs the Windows component store and protected Windows system files. It does not prove that imekrmbx.dll is a Windows system file on your installation.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying what changed rarely helps. If you are manually hunting through repair output and cannot tell which component is damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
Run Windows Update before or after the repair if updates are available:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart and test again.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a known recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver, update, application installation, or system configuration change and a restore point exists from before the failure.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not remove personal documents, pictures, or other personal files, but you should still back up important data first.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected application.
If no suitable restore point exists, do not create a new one expecting it to repair the already-missing file. Return to application repair or reinstall the responsible component.
Driver updates are rarely the direct fix
imekrmbx.dll is an input-method component, not a graphics, audio, or chipset driver. Device Manager should therefore not be the first place to repair this particular error.
Check drivers only if the failure began with broader input, keyboard, motherboard, or device problems:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and any category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver changes.
Do not remove an otherwise working device merely because imekrmbx.dll is missing. If you are checking many devices manually and need to identify stale versions rather than guessing, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the installed drivers and show what needs updating; its free scan identifies driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version. A driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that requested this DLL.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing files.

There is no verified evidence that imekrmbx.dll should be manually registered. Running commands such as these can produce another error without repairing the original dependency:
regsvr32 imekrmbx.dll
A 32-bit DLL also requires the appropriate 32-bit registration tool and a valid registration interface. Registration does not supply missing dependencies, correct an incompatible application architecture, or restore a deleted file.

- A folder added to the system
PATH
Historical copies may differ by build, architecture, language component, or intended parent program. A file that has the right name can still be incompatible, unsigned, damaged, or malicious. Copying it into a shared Windows directory can also create version conflicts for other programs.
There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for this exact legacy DLL. Safer sources are:
- The original application’s trusted installation media
- The application’s built-in repair or launcher verification feature
- Microsoft Office maintenance or installation media
- Matching Windows XP installation media for an XP language installation
- Current Windows language settings for the modern Korean IME
- Windows Update and Microsoft’s built-in repair tools
If the error names a legacy installer
An old installer may request imekrmbx.dll before the target application is fully installed. Try these steps:
- Locate the original installer media or trusted setup package.
- Copy the installer to a local folder rather than running it from an unavailable network or removable drive.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try a compatibility mode matching the software’s documented Windows generation.
- Right-click the installer again and select Run as administrator.
- If it still fails, install the software inside a supported older Windows environment or use a maintained replacement.
Compatibility mode cannot recreate discontinued Windows components, and Windows Update should not be expected to supply every XP or Office 2003 file.
If it still fails
Collect evidence before making more changes:
- Write down the complete error text.
- Note the executable named in the message.
- Right-click the program shortcut and inspect Properties for its target path.
- Check whether the error occurs only with that executable.
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the failing application path and any listed module or dependency.
- Repair or reinstall the program identified there.
If multiple applications fail, prioritize Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If only one old application fails, prioritize that application’s repair or reinstall. If the file is requested by an unfamiliar executable or an abandoned startup entry, investigate that executable’s location and security status instead of restoring the DLL.
FAQ
Is imekrmbx.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
It is a legacy Microsoft Korean IME component associated with the XP-era Korean IME 2002. Modern Windows includes a current Korean IME, but the legacy DLL should not be assumed to be part of every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Is imekrmbx.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
It is reported as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. The calling program must be compatible with that architecture and with the particular historical build it expects.

Not necessarily. An old installer or Office component may request the DLL even when you do not type Korean. Add Korean through Windows Settings only if you need current Korean input.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Identify the parent application and repair or reinstall its component. A shared Windows folder is not a safe substitute for the application’s intended installation path.
Can SFC restore imekrmbx.dll?
SFC can repair protected Windows system files, but it may not restore a DLL that belonged only to an old application or optional Office component. That is why application repair comes first when one program triggers the error.
Why does the message say a module is missing when the DLL is present?
The named DLL may depend on another file that is missing, incompatible, or blocked. Check the requesting executable and Event Viewer rather than replacing the named DLL repeatedly.
