imelm.dll is a Microsoft Input Method Editor component, and errors involving it usually point to a damaged Windows language feature, legacy Office IME component, or application installation. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website; repair the component or program that is supposed to provide the file.
What this file actually does
imelm.dll belongs to Microsoft IME technology used for language input, including components associated with Japanese and other East Asian input methods. It is not a DirectX file, Visual C++ runtime, or general-purpose game library.
The file has appeared in different Microsoft IME and Office IME packages over time. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 records commonly associate it with Microsoft IME 2012, while Microsoft’s Office IME 2007 documentation also lists Imelm.dll as part of its Japanese IME hotfix package. Current Windows installations deliver IME functionality through Windows language features, so installing an old “Microsoft IME 2012” package is not automatically correct for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
A genuine copy is normally found in an IME folder such as:

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may also appear at:
C:WindowsSysWOW64IMESHAREDimelm.dll
These paths and versions vary by Windows release, language, architecture, and installed Office components. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first repair |
|---|---|---|
| Several programs fail, or typing and language switching are broken | Damaged Windows IME or language component | Windows Update, DISM, SFC, then reinstall the affected language |
| Only one application fails | Damaged application files or an incompatible private DLL | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The problem began after removing Office | Legacy Office IME component was removed or damaged | Repair Office or reinstall its matching language component |
| The file disappeared after antivirus activity | Quarantine or false positive | Review antivirus history and verify the file path and signature |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or an entry-point error appears | Wrong architecture or mismatched version | Reinstall the owning component |
An application crashes with IMELM.DLL as the faulting module |
IME interaction, application damage, or another underlying fault | Repair the application and inspect the crash path |
| The error started after an update or cleanup | Incomplete update, component-store damage, or manual deletion | Restart, update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
Reported messages include “The program can’t start because imelm.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because imelm.dll was not found,” and “Error loading imelm.dll.” You may also see “The procedure entry point could not be located,” “imelm.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error,” or “Cannot register imelm.dll.” The exact wording depends on the executable, Windows version, loader failure, and localization.
Fix imelm.dll errors in the right order
1. Identify whether Windows or one application owns the failure
First, note when the message appears:
- Before signing in or while Windows starts
- When switching Japanese, Chinese, or another input method
- When launching one application
- When launching several unrelated programs
- Immediately after Windows Update, Office removal, antivirus activity, or disk cleanup
If only one program reports the error, treat that program as the owner until proven otherwise. If multiple programs and Windows typing features are affected, repair Windows IME and language components first.
For an application-specific error, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the program, right-click it, and choose Open file location. Check whether the application directory contains its own imelm.dll. A private copy may be incompatible with the program or with your Windows build.
Do not replace that file manually. The application’s official repair or installer is the safer source.
2. Install Windows updates and restart
An incomplete update can leave language or IME files out of sync.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on it.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
Try the affected application or input method again. If the error remains, continue with component repair rather than copying a DLL.
3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
These commands repair the Windows component store and protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It can take time and may appear to pause. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
A successful result may say that SFC found corrupt files and repaired them, or that no integrity violations were found. Test the application and language input again.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, install pending Windows updates, confirm that the computer is online, restart, and run the commands again. If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not download individual replacements. Continue to the language-component and application repairs below, then consider Windows recovery options.

Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition behind the failure and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and repairing the owning application remains the definitive fix when only one program is affected.
4. Remove and add the affected language feature
If the error occurs while typing or switching input methods, reinstall the affected language feature.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Open Language & region.
- Find the affected language under Preferred languages.
- Select the … menu beside it.
- Choose Remove, if Windows allows removal and another display language is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Click Add a language.
- Search for the language and select Next.
- Install the required language pack and input features.
If you need to keep the language but only need to refresh its keyboard or IME, open the language’s … menu, select Language options, and remove and re-add the relevant keyboard or input method where available.
On Windows 10, use Settings > Time & Language > Language, select the language, choose Options, and remove and reinstall its language pack or keyboard.
Test typing in a text editor before opening the affected application. In managed or offline environments, the correct language pack or Features on Demand media may be required. Microsoft’s IME guidance explains package-related cases and common input-method problems.
5. Repair or reinstall the affected application
When one application alone reports imelm.dll, Windows repair commands may not replace the application’s private files.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its … menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Start the application again.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the application, choose Advanced options, and click Repair if the option is available.

It is safer than copying a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL from another computer.
6. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a file after an update or false detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
imelm.dll. - Check the detected file’s full path, application, and detection name.
Restore a file only when it is in the expected Microsoft IME or trusted application path and its digital signature identifies Microsoft or the application’s legitimate publisher. If the file is in a download folder, temporary directory, or unrelated program folder, do not restore it blindly.
Update Windows Security, run a full scan, and repair the owning component through Windows or the application’s official installer.
7. Check architecture and mismatched versions
Known public records include 32-bit files associated with Microsoft IME components, including version 15.0.9200.16384, and other third-party catalogue entries. These listings do not establish that a particular version belongs on your computer.
A 32-bit application may require a compatible 32-bit dependency even on 64-bit Windows. That is why both System32 and SysWOW64 can contain different system components. The folder name is counterintuitive: on 64-bit Windows, System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 commonly contains 32-bit files.
To check an application’s architecture, open Task Manager, right-click its process, and choose Properties or inspect the program’s documentation. Do not choose a DLL by file size or version number alone. A mismatched copy can produce “not designed to run on Windows” or an entry-point error.
Reinstall the relevant language feature, Office component, or application so Windows selects the correct file.

8. Treat older Office IME installations separately
If the problem began after installing or removing an older Office language pack, the missing component may belong to Office IME rather than the current Windows IME.
Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select Microsoft Office, and choose Change. Select Repair if the installed Office version provides it. For an older Office IME, use the original Microsoft installation media or the applicable Microsoft support package for that exact Office generation and language.
Do not substitute a newer Windows IME file for an older Office component. The package owner and architecture must match.
9. Update drivers only when evidence points there
A display, keyboard, or chipset driver is not the normal owner of imelm.dll. Update drivers only if Device Manager shows a warning, the error coincides with a hardware change, or Event Viewer identifies a related device failure.
Recommended Free Tools
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, or Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you hunt through Device Manager and manufacturer pages; its driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the application that owns imelm.dll.
10. Do not routinely use regsvr32
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the required registration entry points. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Although a particular trusted imelm.dll copy may expose DllRegisterServer, registering it is not the normal solution for a missing or corrupted Windows IME component. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 imelm.dll
against an arbitrary downloaded file can create more problems and does not repair the package that should have installed it.

A crash report naming IMELM.DLL does not prove that the DLL caused the crash. It may be where an application happened to fail while interacting with the IME.
If repair, language reinstallation, and application reinstall do not help, use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10. Depending on the timeline, System Restore, a Windows repair reinstall, reset, or installation media may be appropriate. Back up important files before using reset or installation media.
Why downloading imelm.dll is unsafe
There is no verified current standalone Microsoft download intended for manually copying imelm.dll into Windows or an application folder. Random DLL sites may provide the wrong Windows generation, architecture, or build, and the file may be modified or bundled with unwanted software.
A copied file also leaves the underlying problem untouched: a damaged language package, incomplete update, quarantined component, or broken application installation. Use Windows Update, Microsoft language features, Microsoft Office media, or the affected program’s official installer instead.
FAQ
Is imelm.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes, imelm.dll is a real Microsoft IME-related filename. Verify the digital signature and location because malware can use a legitimate filename. Expected locations are normally under an IME directory within Windows.
Should I download imelm.dll?
No. Repair or reinstall the component that owns it. A standalone copy may be unsafe, mismatched, or ineffective.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is imelm.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
IME functionality is part of Windows language features, but the exact package and file layout vary. Older records may refer to Microsoft IME 2012 or Office IME, which should not be treated as universal names for current Windows.
Why does only one program report the error?
That usually indicates a damaged application installation or an incompatible private copy. Repair the application, verify its files, or reinstall it from the official installer.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs that require registration and does not restore missing Windows language components.
What if antivirus removed the file?
Check Protection history, verify the path and signature, scan the computer, and reinstall the affected Windows or application component instead of restoring an unknown copy.
