hpzsnt09.dll is missing when an old HP DeskJet printer component cannot be loaded. The safest repair is to reinstall the correct HP printer software or remove the obsolete printer package, not to download the DLL by itself.

You may see one of these messages:

The program can’t start because hpzsnt09.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

A printer-related failure can also appear as a stuck print queue, a spooler crash, an installation error, or an application that closes when you open its print dialog.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing anything:

  • The HP printer is still installed and you use it: remove the damaged printer software, then install the package for the exact model.
  • The printer appears in Windows, but printing fails: check the printer queue, driver, and Print Spooler before replacing any DLL.
  • The printer was recently removed or Windows was upgraded: remove the stale HP printer and driver package.
  • Antivirus quarantined the file: review quarantine, but reinstall from HP rather than restoring an isolated DLL blindly.
  • The file exists in System32, but the error remains: the missing item may be a dependency, or Windows may still have a broken print-monitor registration.
  • You no longer use the printer: remove the old printer and driver instead of restoring the component.
  • Several Windows features are failing: run DISM and SFC after addressing the HP installation.
  • Only one old application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application if it installed the printer software.

What hpzsnt09.dll is

hpzsnt09.dll is associated with older HP DeskJet software. Publicly indexed metadata identifies a commonly listed build as 32-bit, version 2.240.0.0, and approximately 0.18 MB. That describes an indexed build, not necessarily every copy that was installed.

There is no reliable public documentation that identifies the exact DeskJet model from this filename alone. The file is not a Windows runtime, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, .NET component, or Microsoft system DLL.

Historical Windows diagnostics recorded hpzsnt09.dll under this print-monitor registration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPrintMonitorshpzsnt09

That is consistent with an HP print-monitor component loaded by the Windows print system. Microsoft explains that print monitors provide printer-specific communication functions and are loaded by the print spooler. An older installer may have placed the file in a Windows system location such as System32, but that does not prove that every installation used the same path.

The likely causes are:

  • An incomplete HP driver installation or removal
  • A damaged legacy printer package
  • A Windows upgrade that left an obsolete print-monitor registration
  • Antivirus quarantine or deletion
  • Disk cleanup or manual deletion
  • Corruption of the DLL or one of its dependencies
  • A wrong or incompatible legacy driver

Fix 1: Identify the printer and reinstall its HP software

This is the most likely fix when you still use the printer.

1. Find the printer model

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Look for the HP printer name and model.
  5. If it is not listed, check the label on the printer or its original documentation.

The filename alone cannot tell you which DeskJet model needs repair. Do not select a driver based only on the fact that it mentions hpzsnt09.dll.

2. Remove the damaged printer entry

  1. In Printers & scanners, select the affected HP printer.
  2. Select Remove.
  3. Confirm the removal.
  4. Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
  5. Restart Windows.

If Windows reports that the printer is busy, clear any pending jobs first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the printer from Printers & scanners.
  2. Select Open print queue.
  3. Cancel every pending document.
  4. Return to the printer page and remove it.

3. Reinstall the matching package

Use HP’s official printer driver page and search by the exact printer model or product number. Choose the package offered for your Windows version and follow its installation prompts.

During setup:

  1. Keep the printer disconnected if the installer asks you to do so.
  2. Run the installer normally, or right-click it and select Run as administrator if setup cannot write the driver.
  3. Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
  4. Restart Windows after installation.

Test the repair by printing a Windows test page:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
  3. Select the HP printer.
  4. Choose Print test page.

If the test page prints and the original application opens its print dialog normally, the missing-DLL problem was part of the damaged HP installation.

If the installer cannot find the printer, use Add device in Printers & scanners, confirm that the printer is powered on, and reconnect the USB cable only after Windows has finished detecting it.

Fix 2: Remove an old HP driver package completely

Removing the printer entry does not always remove the underlying driver. A stale package can continue to reference hpzsnt09.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
control printers
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select any printer in the Devices and Printers window.
  3. Select Print server properties from the toolbar.
  4. Open the Drivers tab.
  5. Select the obsolete HP driver.
  6. Select Remove.
  7. Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
  8. Restart Windows.

Use care if another working printer uses the same driver package. Removing a shared package can affect that printer.

You can also inspect the hardware entry:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the printer appears.
  4. Right-click the old HP entry.
  5. Select Uninstall device.
  6. If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only for the obsolete HP device.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Install the correct HP package again.

Do not manually delete the hpzsnt09 registry key first. Confirm that no installed HP printer still needs the monitor. Manual registry removal can leave the print subsystem in a worse state.

  • 3 MONTHS OF INSTANT INK WITH HP+ ACTIVATION – Subscribe to Instant Ink delivery service to get ink delivered directly to your door before you run out. After 3 months, monthly fee applies unless cancelled.

If you no longer use the printer, this is the preferred fix. Restoring an obsolete print component can preserve a broken or incompatible driver that serves no purpose.

Fix 3: Repair the HP application if it is still listed

Some HP installations expose a repair option.

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for HP printer software, HP Printer Assistant, or the relevant HP package.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair, if available.
  8. Restart Windows and test printing.

If there is no repair option, select Uninstall, restart, and reinstall the current package for the exact printer model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On older Windows installations:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. Select the HP printer software.
  4. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything

Security software may have quarantined or deleted the file. This can happen after a signature update, a damaged file event, or a suspicious modification.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving the HP printer software or hpzsnt09.dll.
  5. Note the detected file path and action.

Do not restore the file solely because its name contains hpzsnt09.dll. A filename is not proof of authenticity.

If the printer is still required, reinstall the complete HP package from its official source. Then run a full scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

If the same newly installed file is repeatedly quarantined, stop restoring it and investigate the detection. Consider using a current Windows-compatible or generic printer driver instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC are not expected to restore hpzsnt09.dll, because this is a third-party HP printer file. Use them when other Windows components are also failing, updates are damaged, or system corruption is suspected.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Retry the HP printer installation.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be treated as a replacement for reinstalling a missing HP driver.

When repeatedly running these commands becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the HP printer package remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that package.

Fix 6: Update or replace the printer driver

An old driver may fail after a Windows upgrade even when the DLL itself is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First check Windows Update:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Open Advanced options.
  5. Select Optional updates.
  6. Expand Driver updates, if available.
  7. Install a relevant printer update.
  8. Restart Windows.

You can also check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers or Print queues.
  4. Right-click the HP device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

If no compatible HP package exists for the model, try Windows’ built-in or generic printer driver. It may restore basic printing without the obsolete HP monitor, although scanning and HP-specific features may not be available.

When manually checking every driver becomes impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify updates; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this file, however, the exact model-specific HP package remains the preferred source.

Do not use regsvr32 as the first fix

This command is often suggested for every DLL error:

regsvr32 hpzsnt09.dll

That is not the normal repair method for a print-monitor DLL. regsvr32 is intended for libraries that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Printer monitors are normally installed and registered by the printer driver package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running the command may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found, report an architecture mismatch, or appear to succeed without repairing the printer. Do not copy the DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder to make the command work.

The indexed build is 32-bit. That does not mean a random 64-bit replacement is suitable, and it does not identify which Windows folder should contain your copy. Use the complete installer for the printer model.

Do not change Windows Features for this file

Turning features such as .NET Framework, legacy components, or printing services on and off will not normally replace a missing HP DLL.

You can confirm that printing services are available:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Leave existing printing-related features unchanged unless Windows specifically reports that one is missing.
  3. Select Cancel rather than toggling features as a trial fix.

If the queue remains stuck after reinstalling the driver:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
services.msc
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler.
  3. Right-click it and select Restart.
  4. Test the printer again.

Avoid isolated DLL downloads

Downloading hpzsnt09.dll from a random DLL site is risky because the file may contain malware, be the wrong version, use the wrong architecture, or lack a required dependency. Even a genuine-looking copy may not repair the stale printer registration that caused the error.

The safe sources are:

  • The exact HP printer software package for your model
  • Windows Update
  • A compatible built-in or generic Windows printer driver
  • The original installation media, if it is known to be genuine and matches the printer

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep the printer’s exact model and product number recorded.
  • Remove old HP software through Windows before installing a replacement package.
  • Do not delete printer DLLs manually from system folders.
  • Check antivirus history before restoring quarantined files.
  • Remove obsolete printers and drivers after replacing hardware.
  • Create a restore point before major legacy-driver changes.
  • If a printer repeatedly fails after Windows upgrades, use a supported generic driver or replace the obsolete hardware.

FAQ

Is hpzsnt09.dll part of Windows?

No evidence supports that. It is associated with older HP DeskJet printer software and functions as a printer-related component.

Which HP DeskJet model uses it?

The filename alone does not identify a reliable exact model. Find the model from Windows, the printer label, or its product documentation before downloading software.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Why is it in System32?

Older printer installers commonly placed components in Windows system locations. A historical registration supports that this DLL was used by the print system, but it does not prove that every installation uses the same path today.

Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?

No. This is not identified as a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Windows runtime file. Repair the HP printer installation first.

What if the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing?

The message can indicate a missing dependency, a damaged print-monitor registration, or an incompatible driver. Remove the old HP package and reinstall the complete model-specific package.

What if I do not use the printer anymore?

Remove the printer from Printers & scanners, remove its old driver through Print server properties, and restart Windows. Removing the obsolete component is safer than restoring it.
