Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →imghook.dll errors usually point to an old Iomega Zip utility, not a missing Windows component. Before replacing anything, identify the program requesting the file and confirm whether the error began after an uninstall, antivirus detection, system cleanup, or Windows migration.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Record these details before changing files:
- Which program displays the error? Note the executable name in the message or title bar. It may be IomegaWare, an Iomega Tools utility, or another older application.
- When does it appear? Does it happen at Windows sign-in, when opening a file dialog, when connecting a Zip drive, or only when launching one program?
- What changed immediately beforehand? Check for an Iomega uninstall, failed reinstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, system restore, or transfer to a newer PC.
- Is Windows 32-bit or 64-bit? Open Settings > System > About and check System type. A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit application DLL even when Windows is 64-bit.
- Where is the file, if it exists? Search for
imghook.dll, then record its full path. A file in an Iomega program folder is more plausible than one in a temporary directory or an unrelated startup folder. - What does the file identify itself as? Right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect Details and Digital Signatures.
The filename is not unique. The commonly indexed build is associated with Iomega Zip software, but another Imghook.dll has been associated with Microsoft Japanese IME components, and older specialist software has also used the name. The path and parent application matter more than the filename alone.

What imghook.dll is and why it is missing
The Iomega-associated IMGHOOK file was used by Zip-drive integration software. Its purpose was to help Windows file and folder browse dialogs recognize Zip drives and related storage options.
It is associated with Iomega Corp. IMGHOOK 6.1, including Iomega Tools and IomegaWare packages. It is not normally a Windows system file, a Visual C++ runtime, a DirectX component, or a .NET component. It should not ordinarily be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

- “The program can’t start because imghook.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “imghook.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading imghook.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in imghook.dll.”
- “imghook.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. A missing-file message can mean the file was deleted or never installed. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that imghook.dll exists but one of its required dependencies does not.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that requests the file
This is the safest and most likely fix when the error names Iomega software or appears while using a Zip drive.
If Iomega software is still listed in Windows
- Close the error and exit any Iomega utilities in the notification area.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Iomega, IomegaWare, or Iomega Tools.
- Select the program and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Try Repair first.
- Restart Windows and test the original program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the application list, select the program, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows again.
- Reinstall the complete Iomega software package from the original installation CD or a trusted archive that matches the Zip drive and the operating system.
On Windows 10, the equivalent path is Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Some older installers do not appear in Settings. In that case, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Iomega entry, and choose Repair or Uninstall.
Install the complete package rather than copying a single DLL. The installer may need to place several files together, create application entries, install a shell integration component, and configure the Zip-drive software. Historical Iomega documentation also directs users to reinstall the Iomega software after reinstalling Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the installer stops or refuses to run
Older Iomega installers may not understand current Windows versions.
- Copy the installer files to a local folder rather than running them directly from removable media.
- Right-click the installer and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for and try the Windows version recommended by the original software documentation.
- Also select Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply, then run the installer.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Compatibility mode does not make an obsolete driver stack modern or secure. It only helps some older installers complete. If the installer requires a very old kernel driver, it may still fail on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
How to tell whether this fix worked
The repair is successful if:
- The original application opens without the
imghook.dllmessage. - The program can access its expected Zip-drive functions.
- The file is present in the application’s own installation directory.
- Windows does not immediately quarantine the file again.
If the same error returns, do not download a replacement immediately. Continue with the identity and security checks below.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
Security software may have removed a legacy DLL because it is old, unusual, unsigned, or loaded by an obsolete application. A detection cannot be classified as a false positive from the filename alone.

Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand any entry involving
imghook.dllor the Iomega installation folder. - Read the detected path and threat classification.
- If the file came from the original Iomega installer and its location and publisher are trustworthy, use the available Restore action.
- Reinstall the complete Iomega package afterward if the file remains absent.
Only restore a file when you can establish its provenance. Do not restore a copy from a Downloads folder, temporary directory, email attachment, or unknown archive. If Defender or another antivirus program repeatedly removes the file, scan the complete installer and the computer rather than creating an exclusion just to suppress the warning.
Microsoft documents Protection History and quarantine restoration in its Windows Security and Defender documentation.
Fix 3: Verify the path, publisher, version, and architecture
A same-named DLL is not automatically interchangeable with the Iomega file.
For every copy you find:
- Right-click
imghook.dlland choose Properties. - Open the General tab and record the full location.
- Open Details and inspect the description, internal name, product name, and file version.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Compare the location with the application that produced the error.
The commonly referenced Iomega file identifies itself internally as IMGHOOK and is associated with Iomega software. A file associated with Microsoft IME or another product should remain with that product and must not be copied into an Iomega folder.
Do not rely on a hash copied from a download page as proof of authenticity. A hash is useful only when you have a trustworthy reference file and a verified chain of custody. For this legacy component, the practical verification is the original installer, the expected application path, the file properties, the signature where available, and a clean antivirus result.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
If imghook.dll is visible in the correct application folder but Windows still says “the specified module could not be found,” a dependency may be missing. The message can refer to a library needed by imghook.dll, not necessarily to the named file itself.
Work through these steps:
- Uninstall the affected Iomega program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete package from its original installer.
- Restart again.
- Test the application without manually moving any DLL.
- If the installer identifies a specific Microsoft runtime as a prerequisite, install that runtime only from Microsoft.
- Test again.
There is no evidence that imghook.dll itself is supplied by a current Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET runtime. Installing all three at random adds complexity and does not repair the parent application. Use a runtime only when the application installer or a reliable dependency diagnostic identifies it.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows also needs 32-bit dependencies. Installing only a 64-bit runtime does not satisfy every 32-bit program.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party Iomega DLL.
Use them when you are also seeing damaged Windows features, repeated system errors, failed updates, or other component corruption.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft provides the documented SFC and DISM procedure for Windows component repair. If both commands complete successfully but imghook.dll is still missing, reinstall the Iomega application rather than repeating the commands.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC results or hunting through Windows repair logs, Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of issues before its full version performs repairs; it is optional, and reinstalling the Iomega program remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 6: Check the Zip device and its driver
If the error appears only when a physical Zip drive is connected, inspect the device separately from the application.
- Connect the Zip drive.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives, Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the device is malfunctioning, choose Uninstall device, disconnect the drive, restart Windows, and reconnect it.
- Use Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device requires a vendor driver, obtain it from the original hardware documentation or a trusted archive matching the exact model.
Do not remove a healthy storage controller or USB controller simply because imghook.dll is missing. The DLL error is usually an application installation problem, not a generic Device Manager problem.
When checking several old hardware drivers manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its full version performs driver installation, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling Iomega software or confirming compatibility with the Zip hardware.
What success looks like
The device should appear without a warning icon, Windows should recognize the drive, and the Iomega utility should start without the DLL error. If Device Manager reports that the device cannot start, the hardware, adapter, or obsolete driver may be incompatible even after the application is repaired.
Fix 7: Do not register imghook.dll unless the application documentation requires it
Do not run this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 imghook.dll
Microsoft’s regsvr32 utility is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer or DllInstall. There is no evidence that the Iomega IMGHOOK file is an ActiveX or COM server that requires registration.
If you run the command on a DLL without the required entry point, Windows may report that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not prove that the file is damaged.

- Plug and play
- Unlimited capacity
- Each disk holds up to 70 floppies
Only register a DLL when the application’s own documentation explicitly requires it and identifies the correct file path and command. For an ordinary missing application DLL, reinstalling the parent program is the correct repair.
Fix 8: Consider compatibility limits on Windows 10 and 11
Restoring the file does not guarantee that the old Iomega software will operate on a current system.
Iomega Zip utilities were designed for much older Windows releases. Legacy parallel-port Zip hardware had compatibility limitations even on older versions of Windows, and modern Windows may reject old drivers, shell hooks, or installation routines.
If the complete software reinstall succeeds but the utility still fails:
- Try the program’s documented compatibility mode.
- Use a supported modern USB Zip device if available.
- Run the legacy application inside a suitable older Windows virtual machine.
- Use an older dedicated computer for the Zip hardware.
- Keep the old system isolated and backed up if it must access legacy media.
Do not assume that copying imghook.dll into a Windows system folder will make the obsolete driver stack compatible. It can instead create a second, harder-to-diagnose installation.
Should you download imghook.dll separately
Usually, no.
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised as a familiar filename.
- A different product’s
Imghook.dll. - The wrong architecture for the application.
- A file with an incompatible version.
- A damaged or modified binary.
- A DLL that fixes the message but leaves the rest of the application uninstalled.
The safe source is the complete Iomega installation media or a trusted archived installer that matches the original device and operating system. If an installer is unavailable, preserve the original application directory and installation media from a known-good legacy computer rather than downloading an unexplained standalone file. Validate any recovered file with its path, properties, signature, and antivirus scanning.

If no trustworthy installer exists:
- Do not use a DLL fixer or registry cleaner.
- Do not copy a random file into a Windows folder.
- Preserve the affected computer before uninstalling anything further.
- Look for an archived installer from a reputable, verifiable source.
- Scan the installer before running it.
- Test the software in an isolated older Windows environment if modern Windows rejects it.
- Recover files from the Zip media with a compatible system if the utility cannot be made operational.
If the error names software other than Iomega, repair that parent application instead. The filename alone does not establish which vendor supplied it.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Capture the following information before seeking further help:
- The exact error text.
- The executable named in the dialog.
- The full path of every
imghook.dllcopy. - The application’s version and installation location.
- The Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The file’s Properties and Digital Signatures results.
- The antivirus detection name and quarantined path.
- Whether the error occurs only when a Zip drive is connected.
- Whether the failure occurs at startup, in a file dialog, or only inside one application.
If the file exists in the expected folder but produces an entry-point or “not designed to run” error, suspect a mismatched version, wrong architecture, or damaged dependency. If it exists only in a temporary or unrelated folder, treat it as suspicious. If reinstalling the parent application changes nothing, the problem may be an obsolete driver or a different same-named DLL rather than a missing Iomega file.
FAQ
Is imghook.dll part of Windows?
No. The commonly identified IMGHOOK file is associated with legacy Iomega Zip software. It should not normally be present as a standard Windows component.
Is imghook.dll a Microsoft Visual C++ file?
There is no evidence that the Iomega-associated file is supplied by Visual C++. Install a Microsoft runtime only if the original application specifically identifies it as a dependency.
Should I put imghook.dll in System32?
No. Put application files in the parent program’s own installation directory through the application installer. Copying a DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 can create path conflicts and does not install the rest of the required software.

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points. The Iomega IMGHOOK file is normally repaired by reinstalling Iomega software.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
A dependency required by the DLL may be missing, or the file may be the wrong architecture or version. Reinstall the complete parent application first.
Is a malware detection automatically a false positive?
No. Examine the exact path, signature, installer source, and detection details. Do not restore or exclude the file merely because its name matches a legitimate legacy DLL.
Will SFC or DISM restore imghook.dll?
Normally no. They repair Windows components, not arbitrary third-party application files. Use them for broader Windows corruption, then reinstall the Iomega program.
