xclick.dll Errors: Restore Waves X-Click Safely on Windows

“The program can’t start because xclick.dll is missing.” If Windows or your DAW reports that xclick.dll was not found, the file usually belongs to Waves Audio’s X-Click plug-in, not to Windows.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to start in the right place:

  • The error appears when opening a DAW or old audio project: reinstall X-Click through Waves Central, then rescan plug-ins.
  • The project uses an older Waves setup: identify whether it requires V9 or V10 before installing a newer Waves generation.
  • The file exists, but the host cannot load it: check the Waves plug-in folder, host architecture, dependencies, and cached scan results.
  • The file disappeared after security software ran: inspect Microsoft Defender Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The message says “The specified module could not be found”: xclick.dll may be present while another dependency is missing.
  • The error appears at Windows startup or in an unrelated application: record the executable name and full DLL path. Do not assume that application uses Waves X-Click.
  • You downloaded xclick.dll from a file archive: delete that copy and reinstall X-Click from Waves instead.
  • You are using a modern 64-bit DAW with an old plug-in: verify that the Waves version and host architecture are compatible.

What xclick.dll is

xclick.dll is a third-party Windows plug-in component associated with Waves X-Click. X-Click removes clicks and transient noise from recordings, including problems found in vinyl transfers and digital audio.

It is not a Windows system file. You should not normally place it in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • The root folder of your DAW
  • A random application directory

Historical Waves installations used versioned plug-in folders, including locations under:

C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins Vx

The exact folder depends on the Waves generation and installation. Current Waves installations may use a different arrangement from older versions, so use the folder location shown by Waves Central and your host’s plug-in settings rather than copying files manually.

Waves lists X-Click across V9 through V17. That does not mean a V17 installation will use precisely the same file layout or file format as an older V9 installation.

Fix 1: Reinstall X-Click through Waves Central

This is the safest and most likely fix when the file was deleted, never installed, or replaced by an incomplete Waves installation.

  1. Save your work and quit the DAW.
  2. Close other audio hosts and Waves applications.
  3. Open the Start menu.
  4. Search for Waves Central and open it.
  5. Sign in to the Waves account that owns X-Click or the relevant bundle.
  6. Open Install Products.
  7. Select My Products.
  8. Find X-Click or the bundle that contains it.
  9. Select the required Waves generation.
  10. Review the installation summary.
  11. Click Install or Install & Activate.
  12. Wait for the installation to finish.
  13. Reopen the DAW.
  14. Run its plug-in scan.

If X-Click does not appear under My Products, check that you signed in to the correct Waves account. A license registered to another account can make a product appear to be missing even when you previously owned it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installation, check the versioned Waves plug-in folder rather than searching only System32. If the installer completes but no plug-in appears, continue with the host and version checks below.

If Waves Central reports an installation error

Do not repeatedly copy DLL files into different folders. Instead:

  1. Confirm that Windows date and time are correct.
  2. Check that the computer has an internet connection.
  3. Temporarily review firewall and antivirus activity without disabling protection indiscriminately.
  4. Confirm that the system drive has free space.
  5. Restart Waves Central.
  6. Retry the installation.
  7. If it still fails, use the official Waves offline installer for the required legacy version.

The correct installer depends on the project and license. Installing the newest available version can be the wrong choice when an older project expects V9 or V10.

Fix 2: Install the Waves generation the project requires

A missing xclick.dll message can occur because the project was created with an older Waves plug-in generation.

Before changing anything, determine:

  • The Waves version used by the project
  • Whether the project opens in a 32-bit or 64-bit host
  • Whether the DAW is loading V9/V10 plug-ins or a newer Waves installation
  • Whether the plug-in was installed through Waves Central or an older offline installer

For a V9 or V10 project, use the matching official Waves legacy installer. Do not assume that installing V17 will recreate every older component in the exact form expected by the project.

If you install a newer Waves generation, the DAW may still report that the old plug-in is unavailable. That does not necessarily mean the new installation failed. It may mean the project is requesting a different generation.

Current Waves V17 Windows support is for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. An old 32-bit host, bridge, or plug-in may require a different supported combination. A historical 32-bit xclick.dll cannot simply be substituted for a 64-bit plug-in.

Fix 3: Rescan the plug-in in your DAW

Reinstalling the file does not always make a DAW notice it immediately. Hosts often cache successful and failed scans.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the DAW only after Waves installation has finished.
  2. Open the DAW’s plug-in or plugin-manager settings.
  3. Confirm that the relevant Waves folder is included in the scan paths.
  4. Remove any stale failed-scan entry for X-Click if the DAW provides that option.
  5. Start a full plug-in rescan.
  6. Reopen the project.

The exact menu differs between DAWs. Do not add System32 merely because the host cannot see X-Click.

For Waves hosts, the scan commands are typically:

  • eMotion LV1: Setup > Mixer Settings > Plugins > Scan
  • SuperRack: Setup > Settings > Plugins > Scan

If the plug-in appears after the scan but the project still refuses to load it, check whether the project expects another Waves generation.

Reset stale Waves preferences

If Waves repeatedly points to an invalid folder, close the host and move this folder aside rather than deleting it immediately:

%appdata%Waves Audio

A practical procedure is:

  1. Quit the DAW and Waves applications.
  2. Press Windows key + R.
  3. Enter:

text
%appdata%

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Rename the Waves Audio folder to something such as Waves Audio.old.
  3. Restart the host.
  4. Run the plug-in scan again.

This forces the application to recreate preferences. If it does not help, restore the renamed folder and continue with version and architecture checks.

Best of all, all of these rhythmic and looping features can be controlled through the four multi-purpose foot switches, ensuring that loop improvisations and backing tracks can be seamlessly integrated into both live performances and practice sessions.

Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Microsoft Defender or another security product may remove or quarantine a plug-in. Do not immediately restore a detected file merely because a DAW reports it missing.

To inspect Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry involving Waves, X-Click, or xclick.dll.
  7. Review the detected file path and action.
  8. Restore or allow it only if you can verify that it came from the official Waves installation.

If the file was found after you downloaded it from a DLL archive, do not restore it. Remove the download, run a scan, and reinstall X-Click from Waves.

If Waves Central itself was blocked, reinstalling from the official installer is safer than adding broad exclusions. If you create an exception, keep it limited to a verified Waves installation path and remove it if it is no longer needed.

Fix 5: Determine whether a dependency is missing

“Error loading xclick.dll” or “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that xclick.dll itself is absent. Windows can display a similar message when a dependency required by the plug-in cannot be loaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, inspect the full message and note:

  • The executable or DAW name
  • The complete path shown for xclick.dll
  • Any second DLL named in the message
  • Whether the message appears during scanning or only when opening a project

Do not install random Visual C++ or DirectX packages as the first response. Those runtimes are not the primary repair for a missing Waves plug-in. Install or repair a runtime only when the complete error, Waves installer, or host specifically identifies that runtime as the missing dependency.

After reinstalling Waves, update Windows and repair its own components:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:

text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Run:

text
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the DAW again.

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not reinstall X-Click or replace a missing Waves plug-in.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and uncertain. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while its full version performs the repair; reinstalling Waves remains the definitive fix when the missing component belongs to X-Click.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Architecture mismatches are common with older audio software.

  • GUITAR LAB KEEPS YOUR SOUND GROWING – Download Zoom Guitar Lab (Mac/Windows) to edit patches, build your own tones, and unlock even more creative control.

Check your Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Look at System type.

Then check the DAW’s architecture in its About or Help screen. A 64-bit Windows installation does not guarantee that every installed host or bridge is 64-bit.

Keep these points in mind:

  • A 32-bit historical plug-in is not interchangeable with a 64-bit build.
  • A 64-bit DAW may not load an old 32-bit Waves component without a compatible bridge.
  • A 32-bit host may require the 32-bit plug-in location.
  • Multiple Waves generations can coexist, but the host, operating system, license, and plug-in generation must support one another.
  • A project created with an obsolete Waves version may fail even after a current version is installed.

If you recently changed DAWs, installed a new bridge, or moved from 32-bit to 64-bit software, reinstall the Waves version supported by that environment and rescan the correct folder.

Fix 7: Update Windows, the DAW, and relevant drivers

A driver update is not the normal repair for xclick.dll, but it can matter when the error began after an operating-system, audio-interface, or host change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Windows Update:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

For an audio interface driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the audio device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart the computer if Windows installs an update.

Also check the audio-interface manufacturer’s official support package if Device Manager finds nothing. Avoid replacing a working driver solely because xclick.dll is missing.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows architecture, and several package revisions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while the full version installs updates; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Waves X-Click.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 for this repair

Do not run:

regsvr32 xclick.dll

as a routine fix.

Microsoft’s regsvr32 command is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. A plug-in component should be repaired through the Waves installer and discovered through the DAW’s plug-in scan.

The command can produce another error, register the wrong architecture, or distract from the real problem: a missing Waves installation, wrong version, unavailable dependency, or incompatible host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why downloading xclick.dll is unsafe

Random DLL download sites create several problems:

  • The file may contain malware.
  • It may be the wrong Waves generation.
  • It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • It may be modified or unsigned.
  • It may satisfy one error while leaving the actual installation incomplete.
  • Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts.
  • Placing an unverified DLL in a searched folder can introduce DLL-loading security risks.

Use Waves Central or the official Waves legacy installer instead. If you have administrator-controlled original installation media or a verified backup, use it only after confirming the correct version and destination.

If the problem still remains

FAQ

Is xclick.dll part of Windows?

No. xclick.dll is associated with Waves Audio’s X-Click plug-in and should not normally be installed in a Windows system folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program uses xclick.dll?

Waves X-Click uses the component. It is a click and transient-noise removal plug-in for audio recordings.

Should I copy xclick.dll into System32?

No. Reinstall the correct Waves version and rescan the host.

Does Microsoft Visual C++ fix xclick.dll?

Not normally. Repair a runtime only when the complete error identifies it as the missing dependency.

Why does the file exist but still fail to load?

The DAW may be scanning the wrong folder, the file may require another missing dependency, antivirus may have blocked part of the installation, or the project may require another Waves generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install V17 to open an old project?

Not necessarily. A project may require V9 or V10, so install the matching official legacy version when necessary.

Should I run regsvr32 xclick.dll?

No. Waves plug-ins are repaired through their installer and detected through the host’s plug-in scan.

What is the safest fix?

Install the licensed X-Click version through Waves Central, use the official legacy installer for older projects, rescan the correct plug-in folder, and verify compatibility before changing Windows files.
