Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the right starting point:
- The error appeared after an update, upgrade, cleanup, crash, or disk problem: repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC.
- Japanese input, IME settings, or the character applet stopped working too: reinstall the Japanese language feature.
- Windows Security recently quarantined the file: check Protection history before changing system files.
- The error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or mentions an entry point: suspect a mismatched version or architecture and let Windows servicing replace it.
- Only one old application reports the error: identify whether that application is invoking Windows text services. Do not assume the program owns the DLL.
- The file exists outside the Windows IME folders or lacks a valid Microsoft signature: treat it as suspicious and scan the system.
- You are considering
regsvr32: do not use it as a general missing-DLL repair. It applies only to certain registration-related failures.
What imjpclst.dll does
The filename belongs to the Japanese Microsoft IME component in Windows. Older records may describe it as part of Microsoft IME 2012, particularly on Windows 8-era systems, but that description is not universal for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Microsoft lists Imjpclst.dll among Japanese IME files for multiple Windows architectures, including x86 and x64 systems. Independent file metadata identifies Microsoft Windows as the product, Microsoft Corporation as the publisher, and a Microsoft Windows production certificate as the signer. It also identifies both 32-bit and 64-bit copies. Microsoft’s Japanese IME file listing · Independent file metadata
Where should it be located
On current 64-bit Windows installations, common locations include:
C:WindowsSystem32IMEIMEJPAPPLETSimjpclst.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64IMEIMEJPAPPLETSimjpclst.dll
System32 normally contains the native Windows architecture. SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows, despite the confusing name.
Older Windows releases used paths such as:
C:WindowsSystem32IMEIMEJP10APPLETSimjpclst.dll
The exact folder depends on the Windows release, installed language features, architecture, and servicing level. Do not treat one path, file size, or hash as universal.
Examples found in older file records include a 32-bit Windows 7-era build 10.1.7600.16385 and a Windows 8-era build 15.0.9200.16384. Later Windows versions use different builds. Windows should restore the version appropriate to the installed operating system.
What the error messages mean
“IMJPCLST.DLL is missing” or “was not found”
Windows or an application requested the Japanese IME component and could not find a usable copy. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, or removed with the Japanese language feature.
“Error loading IMJPCLST.DLL”
Windows located the file but could not load it. Common causes include corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a dependency that is missing or damaged.

“The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean that imjpclst.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL may be missing or incompatible.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
This commonly indicates a corrupt file or a DLL from the wrong Windows release or architecture. Copying a file from another computer often creates exactly this problem.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
The calling component found a DLL but expected an exported function that the installed build does not provide. This is a strong sign of mismatched files rather than a simple missing-file problem.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Windows servicing can replace damaged or incomplete IME files.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Test Japanese input or the action that produced the error.
If Windows Update fails, note the error code and continue with the repair commands below. Do not repeatedly copy DLLs while the component store remains damaged.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupt Windows IME component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to restore protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Microsoft’s DISM and SFC procedure
- Save your work and close open applications.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may appear paused for a while.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Japanese IME again.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the result says no integrity violations were found, the problem may be the language feature, a dependency, or a suspicious replacement file rather than ordinary system corruption.

Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and uncertain. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for repair issues and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the standard path.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found
Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a legitimate Windows repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, build, and architecture. Using an unrelated Windows release can leave you with more mismatched components. Microsoft’s advanced system-file repair guidance
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again.
Fix 3: Reinstall the Japanese language feature
If Japanese input or IME settings disappeared at the same time as the DLL error, reinstalling Japanese is often more relevant than repairing an application.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language > Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for and select Japanese.
- Select Next.
- Ensure the language pack and relevant language features are selected.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows and test the Japanese keyboard and IME.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language > Language.
- Select Add a language.
- Select Japanese.
- Select Next, choose the required features, and select Install.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft delivers Japanese IME through Windows language features and Windows Update, not through a standalone Visual C++-style redistributable. See Microsoft’s language-pack instructions and keyboard and input-layout guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Japanese is already installed:
- Return to the language settings page.
- Select the Japanese language entry.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Add a language and install Japanese again.
- Restart once more and test the IME.
This removes and rebuilds the language feature, but it does not replace the need to run DISM and SFC when broader Windows corruption is present.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined the file after an update or system change.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
imjpclst.dll. - Check the reported path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the file only if it is in the expected Windows IME directory and has a valid Microsoft signature.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can put the device and data at risk. If the file is outside the normal IME directories, has an invalid signature, or appeared unexpectedly, do not restore it. Microsoft Protection History documentation

Fix 5: Verify the file and architecture
Do not rely on the filename alone.
In File Explorer, navigate to the relevant IME folder, right-click imjpclst.dll, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A legitimate system copy should have a valid Microsoft signature. The Details tab can also show product and file information, although builds and descriptions vary.
You can also inspect the file from an elevated Command Prompt:
sigverif
This opens Windows File Signature Verification. Follow the prompts to check unsigned system files.
The consuming process determines which architecture is required. A native 64-bit Windows component generally uses the System32 tree, while a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the SysWOW64 tree. A 32-bit DLL placed where a 64-bit process expects a native DLL, or vice versa, can produce load and entry-point errors.
Do not mix Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11 copies. File versions and sizes vary by release and servicing level, so a familiar-looking version number is not proof that the file belongs on your computer.

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing or corrupt DLL files. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference
Independent analysis reports that at least one imjpclst.dll build exports COM-related functions, but that does not establish that registration is required for every current Windows build.

Use this order instead:
- Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Reinstall the Japanese language feature.
- Confirm the Microsoft signature and correct architecture.
- Investigate
regsvr32only if a specific COM-registration error remains.
Never run regsvr32 against a downloaded DLL. If a Microsoft-signed, architecture-matched system copy must be tested for a documented registration problem, use the corresponding 32-bit or 64-bit version of regsvr32 from an elevated Command Prompt. The exact command is build-dependent and is not the normal fix for this file.
Fix 7: Investigate a related driver or application only when evidence points there
imjpclst.dll is not a normal hardware driver file, so Device Manager is not the first place to repair it. Use Device Manager only if the same incident includes a keyboard, USB, touchscreen, or language-input device failure:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Avoid changing drivers merely because a DLL error appeared. Guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale can add another variable to the repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace Japanese IME or Windows component repair.
If SFC and DISM do not fix the problem
Work through these escalation steps:
- Install all pending Windows updates.
- Re-run DISM and SFC after the update.
- Reinstall Japanese from Language & region.
- Check whether Protection history shows a quarantine event.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- If the file is suspicious or appears outside Windows IME folders, run Microsoft Defender Offline.
- Try another Windows user account only after system and language repair.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists and the issue began after a known software or update change.
- Consider a Windows repair installation or reinstall from official Windows media if system servicing remains damaged.
System Restore is a fallback. It can remove recently installed applications, drivers, or updates, so review the affected items before confirming. Microsoft recovery and restore-point guidance
Why downloading imjpclst.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites sites can provide:
- Malware or an altered binary
- The wrong Windows release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- A copy that bypasses Windows servicing and fails again after the next update
Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or another computer is therefore not a dependable repair. Windows servicing knows which build, language feature, and architecture belong on the system. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and the official Japanese language installation process instead.
Prevention
- Keep Windows and its language features updated.
- Do not remove Japanese language components during disk cleanup unless you intend to reinstall them.
- Review antivirus quarantine before deleting or restoring system files.
- Keep recovery options available before major upgrades.
- Avoid replacing system DLLs with files from another Windows computer.
- Record whether the failing process is 32-bit or 64-bit before investigating architecture errors.
FAQ
Is imjpclst.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with the Windows Japanese Microsoft IME. Verify the file’s location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is it part of Office or a game?
There is no verified evidence that it is a normal Office, game, DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET component. An application may display the error while invoking Windows text input, but that does not mean the application owns the DLL.
Does this apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. The repair approach applies to both, although paths, builds, and Settings labels can differ.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Even a genuine copy may have the wrong build, edition, language configuration, or architecture. Let Windows restore it through servicing.
What if Japanese input works but one program still reports the error?
Repair Windows first, then update or repair that program from its official source. If only one old application fails, it may be using an incompatible text-input integration or dependency.
