imjpcus.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Microsoft Japanese IME. If Windows reports that imjpcus.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, restore the Japanese language and IME components rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file normally belongs under:

C:WindowsSystem32IMEIMEJPimjpcus.dll

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may instead be associated with:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

C:WindowsSysWOW64IMEIMEJPimjpcus.dll

The exact location depends on Windows architecture, installed language features, and servicing updates. The safest repair is to reinstall Japanese through Windows Settings, then repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC.

What the error means

You may see one of these messages:

  • imjpcus.dll is missing
  • imjpcus.dll was not found
  • This application failed to start because imjpcus.dll was not found
  • imjpcus.dll could not be loaded
  • imjpcus.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error

The filename alone does not identify the cause. The problem may involve a missing Japanese IME feature, interrupted Windows update, corrupted system files, antivirus quarantine, or an old application that incorrectly expects a legacy component.

Microsoft IME is the Windows feature that provides Japanese keyboard input, text conversion, prediction, and related keyboard settings. imjpcus.dll is not normally a standalone runtime that you install beside an application.

Some file catalogs describe it as part of Microsoft IME 2002. That is a legacy catalog description. Modern copies can identify themselves as Microsoft IME, published by Microsoft Corporation, and as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Before repairing the file

Do not download imjpcus.dll from a random DLL website. A manually downloaded copy can have the wrong Windows version, architecture, language component, or file path. It may also be modified or bundled with unwanted software, and copying it into an application folder often leaves the actual IME problem unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears. Those packages are not known to provide imjpcus.dll.

Use Windows language settings, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft Defender, System Restore, or the affected application’s official installer instead.

Fix 1: Reinstall Japanese and Microsoft IME

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes, plus any download time

This is the best first repair when the error appears while typing Japanese, switching keyboard layouts, using ctfmon.exe, or starting software that relies on Windows Japanese input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Select Language & region.
  4. Under Preferred languages, select Add a language.
  5. Search for Japanese and select it.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Leave the language features selected, including Microsoft IME if shown.
  8. Select Install.
  9. Restart Windows after installation finishes.
  10. Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  11. Select the three-dot menu beside Japanese.
  12. Select Language options.
  13. Confirm that Microsoft IME appears under keyboard or language features.

If Japanese is already installed but the file is still missing, remove and add the language again:

  1. Open Japanese > Language options.
  2. Remove the installed Japanese keyboard or language feature if Windows allows it.
  3. Return to Language & region.
  4. Remove the Japanese language entry.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Add Japanese again using the steps above.

Do not remove your only usable keyboard layout before confirming that another keyboard is available.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Time & Language.
  3. Select Language.
  4. Under Preferred languages, select Add a preferred language.
  5. Search for and select Japanese.
  6. Select Next, then Install.
  7. Open the Japanese language entry.
  8. Select Options.
  9. Confirm that Microsoft IME is installed under keyboards.
  10. Restart Windows.

After restarting, test Japanese input by selecting the language indicator on the taskbar and choosing Japanese Microsoft IME. Open a text editor and type a few characters. If the error no longer appears and Japanese input works, the language component was the likely cause.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes

Use this repair after reinstalling Japanese, after an interrupted feature update, or when Windows says the file exists but it is damaged or cannot be loaded.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. Restart Windows when DISM finishes.

Run SFC

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Continue with the application and quarantine checks below.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the program again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, inspect the CBS log, and consider the escalation steps later in this guide.

If Windows cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents a repair-source form of DISM:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a repair source that matches the installed Windows version and architecture. Do not use an arbitrary folder or a source from a different release.

While you are manually comparing component versions and repeating DISM and SFC, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what it detects; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than required.

Check the SFC repair details

If SFC could not repair the file:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Enter:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop.
  3. Look for entries mentioning imjpcus.dll, the Japanese IME, or related protected files.

If the log identifies broader component-store damage, run DISM again with a valid matching repair source. If DISM and SFC still cannot repair Windows, continue to System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.

Fix 3: Check Windows Update and language-feature installation

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A failed language-feature installation can leave Japanese listed in Settings while its files are incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when requested.
  6. Check for updates again after restarting.
  7. Revisit Language & region or Language.
  8. Open Japanese language options and confirm that Microsoft IME is installed.

If language installation repeatedly fails, restart Windows and try again while connected to the internet. On managed computers, enterprise policy or unavailable Features on Demand content can block language features. Microsoft’s IME troubleshooting guidance covers additional installation and managed-environment cases.

Temporarily use the previous IME version

If the issue began immediately after a Windows update and Japanese input is malfunctioning rather than completely absent, a compatibility switch may help:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Time & language > Language & region on Windows 11, or Time & language > Language on Windows 10.
  3. Open Japanese language options.
  4. Open Microsoft IME settings.
  5. Select General.
  6. Enable Use previous version of Microsoft IME if the setting is available.
  7. Test Japanese input.

This is a temporary compatibility workaround, not a permanent replacement for repairing the language component. Turn it off after Microsoft IME works normally again.

Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file, although an unexpected copy may also be malicious. Do not restore a file simply because a game or application requests it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any detection involving imjpcus.dll.
  8. Check the original file path and detection details.

A Microsoft-signed file under the expected Windows IME directory is materially different from an unsigned copy in a game folder, temporary directory, downloads folder, or user profile.

If Defender identifies the expected file as quarantined, install all Windows updates first and then follow Microsoft’s restoration instructions. If the file was found outside the normal Windows IME directories, leave it quarantined until you have confirmed that the application is legitimate.

After a quarantine event, reinstall Japanese through Language settings and run DISM followed by SFC. That restores the component through Windows servicing instead of relying on an old quarantined copy.

Fix 5: Repair the program that shows the error

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

If Windows Japanese input works normally but one old game or application reports imjpcus.dll, the application may be the actual problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is especially likely when:

  • The error appears only when launching one program.
  • The message points to the program’s installation folder.
  • Japanese IME works in Notepad and other Windows applications.
  • SFC reports no integrity violations.
  • The application was recently moved, restored from backup, or partially uninstalled.

First use the application’s own repair option:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11.
  2. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.

For desktop programs without those options, open the application’s official installer or launcher and choose Repair, Verify files, or the equivalent command. If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer.

Do not copy a random imjpcus.dll into the program directory. An old program may have an incorrect dependency, or it may require a particular architecture that a replacement file does not provide. Reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the program itself is incorrectly packaged.

Fix 6: Check updates and input-related drivers

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

imjpcus.dll is an IME component, not normally a device driver. Device Manager will not usually reinstall this DLL. However, an update may have affected keyboard or input hardware, so check it only after repairing the language feature and Windows files.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Keyboards.
  4. Right-click the physical keyboard device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Repeat for relevant entries under Human Interface Devices if a keyboard manufacturer identifies one.
  8. Restart Windows.

Do not remove an unknown device merely because its name looks unfamiliar. If the problem is limited to Microsoft IME, driver replacement is unlikely to be the primary repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually finding the correct driver versions can take time, especially when several input devices are listed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify them; installation through the full version is optional, and it does not replace the need to repair Japanese IME through Windows.

Fix 7: Verify the path, architecture, signature, and version

Time needed: 10 minutes

Use this check when you found a copy of the file and want to determine whether it belongs to Windows.

Check the path

Open File Explorer and inspect:

C:WindowsSystem32IMEIMEJP

On 64-bit Windows, also inspect:

C:WindowsSysWOW64IMEIMEJP

The names are counterintuitive:

  • System32 commonly contains 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
  • SysWOW64 commonly contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.

Therefore, a 32-bit record does not automatically mean that the file belongs beside a 32-bit third-party program. Do not copy files between these directories manually.

Check the digital signature

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the signature.
  5. Select Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature from Microsoft Corporation.

A valid signature supports authenticity, but it does not prove that a copy in an unexpected folder is appropriate or safe. Check the path as well as the publisher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check file details

Open the Details tab and review the description and product information. Legitimate records identify the file as Microsoft IME or associate it with Microsoft Windows Operating System. Public catalogs list multiple versions, including 32-bit and 64-bit variants, but those tables are identification clues rather than universal download instructions.

The exact version and size depend on Windows release, architecture, installed language features, and servicing updates. Do not treat a catalog version as a target that must be downloaded.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Fix 8: Test with a new Windows user account

Time needed: 10 minutes

A damaged user profile can make Microsoft IME appear broken while the system file is intact.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Other users on Windows 11, or Family & other users on Windows 10.
  4. Select Add account.
  5. Create a local test account if appropriate.
  6. Sign out of the current account.
  7. Sign in to the test account.
  8. Add Japanese and test Microsoft IME.

If Japanese input works in the new account, the original profile may have corrupted input settings. Move personal data to a new profile or repair the original profile rather than replacing imjpcus.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Use System Restore or repair Windows

Time needed: 30 minutes or longer

Use System Restore when the problem began after an update, language change, driver installation, or system modification and a restore point predates the failure.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal files, but review the affected-program list before proceeding.

If no suitable restore point exists, or System Restore does not resolve the problem, use an in-place Windows repair installation from official Microsoft installation media. Choose the option that preserves personal files and applications when offered. This is preferable to manually replacing protected Windows DLLs.

FAQ

Is imjpcus.dll malware?

The legitimate file is a Microsoft DLL associated with Japanese Microsoft IME. A Microsoft signature and expected Windows IME path support legitimacy. They do not make an unsigned copy in an application or temporary folder trustworthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a third-party application DLL?

Normally, no. It is a Windows Microsoft IME component. An older application may request it incorrectly, but that does not mean the application should receive a manually downloaded copy.

Why do some records say Microsoft IME 2002?

That wording comes from older catalog and historical records. It is a legacy association, not a reliable description of every modern Windows copy.

Why are there 32-bit and 64-bit versions?

Windows supports components for different application architectures. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components, while System32 commonly contains 64-bit components. Do not move a file based only on its bitness label.

Does regsvr32 fix imjpcus.dll?

Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed to register themselves through an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft does not identify imjpcus.dll as a self-registering COM DLL. If you run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 imjpcus.dll

and receive DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not mean the correct repair is to download another copy. Use language installation and DISM/SFC instead.

What if SFC says it found no violations?

The issue may be a missing Japanese language feature, a bad application installation, an incorrect application dependency, a damaged user profile, or a file being requested from the wrong path. Test Japanese in another Windows application and repair the program that displays the error.

Should I install a driver or Windows Feature?

There is no standard Windows Optional Feature or device driver whose purpose is to provide a manually copied imjpcus.dll. Install Japanese through Language settings. Use Device Manager only for a separate keyboard or input-device problem.

What if Japanese installation keeps failing?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, and try again. On managed systems, language Features on Demand may be restricted by policy or unavailable from the configured repair source. Review Microsoft’s IME troubleshooting documentation or contact the system administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the absence of the file always mean Windows is damaged?

No. The file may be absent because Japanese Microsoft IME is not installed. Absence becomes meaningful only when Japanese is installed, an application expects the component, or Windows reports an integrity or loading error.
