For a small group on one network, local hosting is sufficient. For a larger or public server, the Pixelmon Wiki recommends paid hosting for performance, stability and safety. Quest content depends on the pack and release: a pack such as PokeQuests supplies a structured Kanto campaign, while newer 9.3.x installations on Minecraft 1.21.1 may present Research tasks instead of the older quest interface.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What an immersive Pixelmon modpack actually contains
Pixelmon is a Java Edition Minecraft mod, not a Bedrock add-on. An immersive modpack combines the Pixelmon jar with a loader, a carefully chosen world-generation setup, optional sidemods, configuration files and (when included) a quest or research system. The result should feel like a coherent adventure rather than a pile of unrelated jars: progression has goals, new biomes generate correctly, multiplayer clients agree on every file, and the server can be restored when an update goes wrong.

There is no universal “Pixelmon modpack version.” Minecraft, Pixelmon, the loader, Java and every sidemod form one compatibility set. Pick that set before downloading anything else.
Lock the version matrix before installing
Use the server’s exact pair as the source of truth. The official Pixelmon server-installation guidance lists these supported combinations:
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
| Minecraft | Pixelmon releases listed | Java requirement | Loader guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.1 | 9.3.0–9.3.13 | Java 21 for 9.3.0 and later | NeoForge is required for 9.3.0 and later |
| 1.20.2 | 9.2.4–9.2.10 | Java 17 | Use the loader specified by that release’s installer |
| 1.20.1 | 9.2.0–9.2.3 | Java 17 | Use the loader specified by that release’s installer |
| 1.16.5 | 9.1.12 | Java 8 for releases before 9.2.0 | Use the matching Forge-based installation |
The ranges are not interchangeable. A 9.3.x client on 1.21.1 cannot join a 9.2.x server on 1.20.2, and a client with a different Pixelmon build in the same Minecraft branch can still be rejected. “Players connecting to a server must use the same version of Pixelmon that the server is using,” according to the Pixelmon Wiki. Treat the table as a lockfile: record the exact Minecraft version, Pixelmon build, loader build, Java major version and sidemod versions in one shared document.
Why Java and loader mismatches are confusing
A launcher may silently select a system Java that is too old or too new. Check the runtime assigned to the specific instance, not just the Java installed globally. Pixelmon 9.3.x requires Java 21; selecting Java 17 can produce a launch failure before the main menu appears. Conversely, a pre-9.2 release expects Java 8. The client and server must each run the Java version required by their release.
NeoForge is mandatory for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and later. Older branches have their own Forge-era installers and instructions. Do not copy a loader jar from a different Minecraft version into the instance just because its filename looks similar.
Hardware and software prerequisites
- Java Edition: the Pixelmon Wiki states that only Java Edition can run Forge mods such as Pixelmon.
- Client memory: make at least 2 GB available and assignable to the game. A large texture pack, shaders or many sidemods can require more.
- Server memory: allocate at least 4 GB, preferably more. Player count, view distance, chunk generation and additional mods determine the practical ceiling.
- Disk space and backups: keep free space for the server world, logs, generated chunks and a second copy of the world before upgrades.
- Identical files: every player needs the same Pixelmon jar and the same required sidemods, with matching versions and dependencies.
Memory allocation is not a performance guarantee. Giving a small server excessive RAM can leave the operating system short of memory, while a busy world may need more than the minimum. Start with the documented minimum, monitor crashes and lag, and increase allocation only when the host has headroom.

Install a client modpack step by step
- Create a dedicated profile. In your launcher, make a new instance for the chosen Minecraft/Pixelmon pair. Do not mix the files with an unrelated modpack.
- Install the matching loader. For Pixelmon 9.3.x on 1.21.1, install the required NeoForge release. For an older branch, follow that branch’s Forge or loader instructions. Select the same loader family and build that the server will use.
- Select the required Java runtime. Point the profile to Java 21 for 9.3.0 and later, Java 17 for 9.2.0–9.2.10, or Java 8 for releases before 9.2.0.
- Set memory. Ensure at least 2 GB is available and assignable to the instance. Leave additional memory for the operating system and other applications.
- Add Pixelmon. Put the exact server-approved Pixelmon jar in the instance’s
modsdirectory. A client-only download or a build for another Minecraft version will not work. - Add optional sidemods one at a time. Check each jar’s Minecraft, loader and Pixelmon compatibility, plus its dependencies. Keep a copy of the working profile before adding the next file.
- Launch to the title screen. Confirm that the expected Pixelmon version appears in the mod list and that the game reaches the main menu without a loader error.
- Join only after the server profile is frozen. Export or document the profile’s versions so friends can reproduce it exactly instead of downloading “the latest” files independently.
If a launcher offers a modpack import, still inspect the resulting mods folder. Imported packs can contain a newer sidemod than the server, an optional client-only jar or a duplicate dependency.
Set up a Pixelmon server in the correct order
The order matters because world generation and configuration files are created during the first launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm the pair and Java first. Write down the Minecraft version, Pixelmon build, loader build and Java major version. Install the loader and runtime that match those values.
- Prepare a clean server directory. Use a new folder for the selected instance. Keeping old jars in the directory makes it easy to load two versions accidentally.
- Install NeoForge or Forge. Run the installer for the chosen Minecraft branch and use the server installation option. Start the server once so it creates its base files.
- Accept the EULA. Stop the process, open the generated
eula.txt, set the EULA value to true only if you agree to Mojang’s terms, then save it. - Place Pixelmon in
mods. Copy the server-approved Pixelmon jar into the server’smodsfolder. Do not leave an older Pixelmon jar beside it. - Generate a fresh world when required. If you want Pixelmon structures, biomes or other spawn-area features to generate correctly, create the world after Pixelmon and any biome/world-generation mods are present. A world that has already generated chunks cannot retroactively populate those chunks in the same way.
- Launch and stop cleanly. Start the server again, wait for world generation to finish, then use the server’s stop command rather than closing the window.
- Configure Pixelmon. Edit the generated
pixelmonconfiguration files for the features your group wants. Settings that affect fresh chunks should be selected before players explore a large area. - Add sidemods after the base server works. Copy compatible jars into
mods, restart, and read the log for missing dependencies or rejected files. Adding ten jars at once makes the offending file difficult to identify. - Back up before inviting players. Save the world, configuration directory and the exact mod manifest. Keep dated backups outside the live server folder.
World-generation decisions to make before exploration
- Whether the group wants a newly generated world or an existing Minecraft map.
- Which biome or terrain sidemods are installed before the first player travels.
- How much land players may explore before configuration changes are considered final.
- Whether a reset is acceptable if a generation mod is changed later.
Changing a generation setting after thousands of chunks exist normally affects only new chunks. If the desired feature must appear near spawn, regenerate the world before anyone explores it and keep the old world as a backup rather than deleting it permanently.
Choose local hosting or a larger server
Local hosting for a same-network group
Running the server on a home computer is appropriate when players are on the same network and the host can leave the process running. It avoids a hosting bill, but the host’s CPU, memory, upload bandwidth, power settings and firewall become part of the game’s reliability. Test a second player before planning a public event, and stop the server cleanly when making backups.

Paid hosting for scale
The Pixelmon Wiki strongly recommends paid hosting for bigger servers where performance, stability and safety matter. A managed host can keep the process online, provide monitored hardware and offer backup controls, but you still have to select the correct Minecraft/Pixelmon pair and maintain the mod manifest. Hosting does not fix a mismatched jar.
Choose capacity by concurrent players, exploration rate and sidemod count rather than by a headline RAM number. The official minimum is at least 4 GB allocated, preferably more; heavy world generation and many simultaneous players may require additional resources. Ask the host which Java versions and loader builds are available before committing to a 9.3.x or legacy instance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep every player on one reproducible profile
Create a manifest with one line for each component: Minecraft version, Pixelmon version, loader version, Java major version, sidemods, dependencies and configuration revision. Distribute that manifest with the launcher profile or a zipped instance. Do not tell players to install “the newest version,” because newest files can move the profile to another Minecraft branch.
- Freeze the manifest while a season or quest campaign is active.
- Test an update on a copied server world first.
- Announce the exact replacement jar and remove the old jar from the live profile.
- Require every player to restart after a server-side mod change.
- Keep a rollback copy of the previous server directory and world.
A client can have extra client-only visual mods only when the server and loader permit them, but any mod required by the server must match exactly. When in doubt, reproduce the server’s clean profile first, then add cosmetic changes separately.

How quests and Research differ
“Pixelmon quests” does not describe one guaranteed feature. The source of objectives matters: a pack may include a quest mod, Pixelmon itself may expose tasks, or a newer release may use a Research system instead of the legacy quest interface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| System | What supplies objectives | Typical progression | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom quest pack such as PokeQuests | The pack’s quest content | A structured regional campaign; PokeQuests advertises a custom Kanto questline | Pack release, dependencies, reward scripts and multiplayer synchronization |
| Legacy Pixelmon quest interface | The Pixelmon release or an included quest component | Objective chains gated by captures, battles, items or locations | Whether the chosen Pixelmon build still includes that interface |
| Research tasks reported for newer 9.3.x on 1.21.1 | The newer release’s Research system | Tasks framed as investigations rather than the older quest-book flow | The exact version-specific wiki documentation; the transition is reported by the community and is not an unconditional promise for every 9.3.x pack |
Before publishing a server’s objective list, open the pack in the exact version you will run. A guide written for a 9.2.x quest screen can be wrong for a 9.3.x 1.21.1 installation. If the interface is Research, explain where players open it and how progress is stored instead of directing them to a quest book that is not present.
Evaluate a quest pack before a multiplayer season
- Campaign structure: Does it provide a beginning, regional milestones and an ending, or only isolated tasks?
- Progression gates: Are objectives tied to badges, captures, story locations, research discoveries or server permissions?
- Rewards: Are rewards cosmetic, economic or powerful enough to distort competitive play?
- Synchronization: Is progress per player, shared by a party or stored server-side?
- Dependencies: Does the pack require a particular loader, Pixelmon build or additional quest mod?
- Persistence: What happens to completed objectives after a backup restore or version upgrade?
A practical immersive quest loop
- Orientation: Give new players a safe starting area, basic supplies and a clear first objective.
- Field work: Send them to a biome or settlement that encourages exploration rather than a menu-only checklist.
- Evidence: Require a capture, battle result, item delivery or Research discovery that the server can verify.
- Gate: Unlock the next route, trainer tier or story chapter only after the objective is recorded.
- Payoff: Grant a reward that supports the next stage without making ordinary catches irrelevant.
- Cooperative branch: Add objectives that two or more players can complete together, while retaining individual progress where the system allows it.
This loop is a design framework, not a claim that every pack implements all six stages. Use only objectives and rewards that the installed pack actually exposes.

“Mod rejection” or the client cannot join
- Compare Minecraft versions on the server and client.
- Compare the full Pixelmon version, not just the first two digits.
- Compare loader family and build.
- Compare every server-required sidemod and dependency.
- Confirm that the client selected the required Java major version.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete jars, restart both sides and try again.
Version mismatch is the expected explanation when the server rejects a client. Copying a newer Pixelmon jar over the old one without changing Minecraft or the loader usually creates a second mismatch.

The game crashes before the main menu
- Check that Java matches the release: 21 for 9.3.0+, 17 for 9.2.0–9.2.10, and 8 before 9.2.0.
- Verify that the loader belongs to the selected Minecraft version.
- Temporarily remove the most recently added sidemod and its dependencies, then add files back one at a time.
- Confirm the instance has at least 2 GB assignable RAM and that the operating system is not out of memory.
- Read the first explicit missing-dependency or wrong-version line in the log rather than relying on the final generic crash message.
The server starts but Pixelmon features are missing
Check that the Pixelmon jar is in the server’s mods directory, that the server actually loaded it, and that the world was generated after Pixelmon and biome mods were installed. Features that belong to already generated chunks may not appear simply because a configuration file was changed later.

Identify the installed system first: a custom pack questline, a legacy Pixelmon quest interface or a Research-based release. Confirm the pack’s dependencies and version-specific instructions. If a community guide describes 9.3.x as having replaced quests with Research, treat that as a lead to verify against the exact build, not as a universal rule.
Lag increases as players explore
- Watch memory and CPU while new chunks generate; exploration is usually heavier than standing in one base.
- Reduce simultaneous exploration during the first world-generation session.
- Check whether a biome or structure sidemod is generating more content than expected.
- Use the server’s available resources as the deciding factor; the documented 4 GB minimum is a starting point, not a guarantee for a busy modpack.
- Restore a known-good backup before testing a major generation change.
Updating without destroying a season
- Announce the target Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader and Java versions before changing anything.
- Copy the complete server directory, world and configuration files.
- Test the new profile on the copy with one client.
- Check that quests or Research data load and that rewards still function.
- Explore a small test area to confirm generation and sidemod behavior.
- Schedule the live change, stop the old server cleanly and retain the old files for rollback.
- Distribute the new client manifest and require players to update before reconnecting.
A change from the 9.2 branch to 9.3.x is not a routine jar swap: it can change Minecraft, Java, loader and the task system at the same time. Treat it as a new instance and preserve the old world until the replacement has been verified.
