Imperator: Rome is worth considering if you want an ancient-world grand strategy game about balancing armies with the people, politics, and economy that sustain them. Its 2.0 Marius update substantially reworked military management, so the game should be judged as the revised experience—not simply as the 2019 launch version. Whether it suits you depends on whether you enjoy running an interconnected state simulation rather than focusing on warfare alone.
What kind of game is Imperator: Rome?
Imperator: Rome is a grand strategy game set in the ancient Mediterranean. You guide a nation through conflict and political change, managing the state as well as its military. Paradox’s feature description highlights characters, population groups, governments, trade goods, military traditions, and provincial development. Paradox’s game overview presents these as connected parts of the experience rather than separate modes.

Characters can govern provinces or command armies. Citizens, freemen, tribesmen, and slaves have different roles, and culture and religion affect how populations fit into the state. Government, trade, and investment in provinces contribute to national strength. The appeal is in weighing these systems together: military decisions sit within a broader job of maintaining and developing the country.

The free Marius update, announced by Paradox on February 16, 2021, reworked military management. Its changes made the armed forces more closely tied to provincial populations and state organization. Paradox’s announcement lists the core changes:
#1 Best Overall
- Adds more content to the base game without increasing the play time
- Deep strategic choices of a euro game, but quick set up of a Roll and Write.
- Variable player powers.~New colloseum side board for gladiatorial fights.
- Solo mode
- Provincial levies: Their size and composition reflect local cultures and population types.
- Professional legions: A separate military option alongside levies.
- Military histories: A new system for tracking military experience.
- Engineers: Units for sieges, river crossings, and road building.
- Revised inventions and traditions: These systems were overhauled, alongside new Diadochi war goals and a redesigned interface.
A May 2022 Wargamer review described the levy system’s tradeoff: when people leave provincial production to fight, the economy can feel the loss. That captures an important part of the design—raising forces is also a decision about the productive population available at home. The reviewer judged that 2.0 brought domestic politics and military action into closer alignment; that is a critic’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will find the systems equally satisfying.
Is it worth playing?
It is a stronger fit for players who enjoy thinking about how military plans affect the rest of a state. The game’s central proposition is not simply to win wars: population satisfaction, characters, government, trade, provincial investment, and army management all contribute to how a country functions.
- Consider it if you like grand strategy, ancient Mediterranean history, and managing several interdependent systems at once.
- Look elsewhere if you mainly want a focused war game and have little interest in population, politics, or economic management.
There is no basis here for promising a particular learning curve, session length, or performance on a modern PC. The useful question is whether the blend of military and domestic management sounds appealing.

No. Heirs of Alexander is an optional content pack focused on the successor kingdoms and the Wars of the Diadochi; it is not the 2.0 update itself. Paradox’s announcement lists unique missions for the Antigonid, Seleucid, Ptolemaic, Macedonian, and Thracian states, as well as shared missions, events, deities, treasures, and music.
The base game is the relevant choice if you want the broad state-management experience. The add-on is aimed at players who specifically want more tailored content for those successor kingdoms. In its May 2022 review, Wargamer considered the pack skippable for many players unless they were especially interested in the featured states. That is a dated recommendation, so your interest in its setting and missions matters more than treating it as a universal verdict.
Rank #2
- The Roman Empire has fallen, but with this tragedy comes a great opportunity!
- Work with other players to divide and claim the lands and buildings of the fallen empire. Larger sets of lands increase your territories but smaller sets come with gems that make you richer.
- Each round you’ll choose how to divide your lands into sets, and you’ll claim sets from adjacent players to improve your empire.
- But pay attention, because adjacent players will also claim territories from you and only the most cunning player will be remembered as the victor.
- Make deals with a highly interactive "I split, you choose" mechanic, with "Kingdomino meets Akropolis" style scoring.
