This is not normally a Windows component. It is associated with LIPSinc Impersonator for Unreal, an old lip-synchronization middleware package used by Unreal Engine products.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches your situation:
- A Steam game or SDK will not start: verify the game files through Steam first.
- The error began after antivirus detection: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- You installed the game from discs or an old installer: repair or reinstall that exact game from its original media.
- The file exists in the game’s
Systemfolder but the game still fails: investigate compatibility, dependent DLLs, permissions, and mixed game versions. - The message names
MSVCR71.dll,MSVCP71.dll, or another Microsoft runtime: repair the separately named runtime. Installing that runtime will not supplyimpersonatorlib_rd.dll. - Several unrelated programs have DLL errors: check Windows components with DISM and System File Checker.
- You found a download offering the DLL: do not use it. A random copy may be malicious, incompatible, or from a different Unreal product.

The file is commonly identified as ImpersonatorLib DLL, developed by LIPSinc as part of LIPSinc Impersonator for Unreal. Public game file inventories place it in a game’s application directory, commonly:

The exact game cannot be identified from the filename alone. Reported Unreal-based products that may contain it include Unreal Tournament 2004, Red Orchestra, Shadow Ops: Red Mercury, Men of Valor, America’s Army, Arctic Combat, related mods, and SDK or editor installations.
The error may occur when launching:
- The game itself
- UnrealEd or another editor
- A dedicated server
- An SDK
- A mod that uses the original game’s files
The file is generally treated as an old Win32 or x86 DLL. That is compatible with a 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows, provided the DLL is in the correct application directory.
Fix 1: Verify the game files through Steam
This is the safest first repair when the affected game is installed through Steam. Steam compares the installation with its depot and replaces missing or damaged files.
- Close the game.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
If the game has a separate SDK, editor, or launcher entry, verify that product as well. Verifying the base game may not repair a separately installed tool.

A successful repair normally restores the file under the game’s own System directory. Do not expect it to appear in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If Steam reports that files were replaced but the error returns, continue with the antivirus check below. Security software may be removing the restored file again.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an old DLL because legacy files may have unusual code patterns or lack modern signing information. That does not prove the file is malicious, but it also does not make every detection safe to ignore.
Check Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection that names
impersonatorlib_rd.dll. - Check the original path.
The original path should point to the trusted game or SDK installation, not to a temporary download folder or an unfamiliar program directory.

- The game came from a legitimate installer, store, or original disc.
- The detection refers to the expected game directory.
- You have confirmed that the game or SDK is the program that needs the file.
- You will verify or reinstall the game afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk. If the detection points somewhere unexpected, leave the file quarantined, run a full security scan, and reinstall the game from its original source instead.
After a legitimate restoration:
- Return to Steam or the original game launcher.
- Run its file verification or repair function.
- Start the game.
- If antivirus removes the file again, do not repeatedly restore it. Record the detection name and path and investigate the installation.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the original game
If verification is unavailable, use the original installer or launcher. The replacement must come from the exact product that originally supplied the file.
Before reinstalling, note the game’s installation path. A typical old Unreal installation may contain folders similar to:

The DLL should be restored to the product’s own System directory when that is where the original installation places it.
Repair from an installer
- Find the original installer for the game or SDK.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, if offered.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the affected product.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the same product again from the original media.
- Apply the game’s official patch or update.
- Launch the game from its normal shortcut or launcher.
Do not combine files from different Unreal games. A copy taken from Unreal Tournament 2004 may not match Red Orchestra, America’s Army, Men of Valor, or another product. The executable, configuration files, middleware, and patches must belong to the same installation.
If the game is installed under a heavily restricted or unusual location and still cannot load its files, reinstalling to a normal local folder can help. Keep the installation in one complete directory rather than moving only the executable or System folder.
Fix 4: Confirm that the shortcut starts the installation you repaired
Old games may have multiple copies installed. You may repair one folder while the shortcut starts another.
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Inspect the Target field.
- Note the executable path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether its own
Systemdirectory containsImpersonatorLib_rd.dll. - Start the executable or launcher from that same installation.
If the shortcut points to an old backup, mod folder, removable drive, or a second library, update the shortcut or repair that specific installation.
A mod may also require the original game’s files while using its own launcher. Check the mod’s documented installation arrangement, but do not download an isolated DLL to make the mod start.

Fix 5: Repair a separately named Microsoft runtime
impersonatorlib_rd.dll is not supplied by the Visual C++ Redistributable. Installing a Microsoft runtime can help only when the error names a Microsoft runtime DLL or the game fails because one of its dependencies is absent.
Some older Unreal products may use legacy Microsoft runtime files such as MSVCR71.dll or MSVCP71.dll. If Windows names one of those files, identify the exact runtime requested by the error and use the game’s original installer or an appropriate Microsoft-supplied redistributable.

Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ downloads are documented in the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Microsoft explains the architecture distinction in its documentation about which DLLs to redistribute.
Do not install the x64 package and assume it replaces an x86 dependency. Also do not assume that a successful runtime installation provides impersonatorlib_rd.dll; it does not.
Fix 6: Do not copy the DLL to System32 or use regsvr32
Why System32 and SysWOW64 are wrong
System32 is primarily the 64-bit Windows system directory on 64-bit Windows, despite its name. SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system components. Neither is the normal home for this game DLL.
Copying an old game DLL into either directory can:
- Leave the original game installation incomplete
- Create conflicts with another program
- Cause Windows to load an unintended copy
- Increase DLL-preloading and search-order risks
- Make later troubleshooting harder
Windows normally searches an application’s own directory as part of its DLL loading process. Put the file back in the exact game or SDK directory that supplied it instead.
Why regsvr32 is usually irrelevant
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs. There is no reliable evidence that impersonatorlib_rd.dll is such a component.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 impersonatorlib_rd.dll
regsvr32 /u impersonatorlib_rd.dll
regsvr32 /i impersonatorlib_rd.dll
They do not repair an ordinary game dependency. A registration error usually means that an unrelated repair method was applied, not that the DLL needs registration.
Fix 7: Check whether this is a compatibility or dependency failure
A different problem exists when the file is present in the correct folder but Windows reports:

- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “Bad Image”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- An access violation
- A load failure naming another DLL
In that case, the file may be damaged, mismatched with the executable, blocked by permissions, or dependent on another obsolete component.

- Run the game’s official patch or launcher repair.
- Remove unauthorized DLL replacements and modified executable files.
- Right-click the game executable and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try the compatibility troubleshooter.
- If needed, test an appropriate older Windows compatibility mode.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the game again.
Do not change compatibility settings randomly for every file. Test one setting at a time and record what changed.
If the game is installed in a protected folder and cannot read its files, reinstall it to a normal local game directory. Running the launcher as administrator can help diagnose a permissions problem, but it should not be used as a substitute for repairing the installation.
A 32-bit game can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layer. The important distinction is that its dependent DLLs must also be the correct architecture and must be located where that game expects them.
Fix 8: Check Windows components only when other programs are affected
Because impersonatorlib_rd.dll is a third-party game file, System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated applications or Windows components are reporting DLL failures, not as the first response to one damaged game installation.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.

These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not normally download or replace a missing LIPSinc game DLL.

A missing impersonatorlib_rd.dll is not normally a driver problem. Do not install a driver simply because the DLL error mentions Windows. Consider driver troubleshooting only if the game also crashes with graphics errors, fails after a graphics-card change, or shows display problems.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the game again.
You can also inspect Sound, video and game controllers if the game reports an audio device problem. Do not uninstall a device unless you have a driver package or a clear recovery plan.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers its free scan identifies as outdated, while driver installation is handled by the full version; this is optional, and repairing the original Unreal game remains the correct fix for impersonatorlib_rd.dll.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading an isolated copy is not a safe repair. A random DLL may:
- Contain malware
- Be modified or damaged
- Belong to another Unreal product
- Have the wrong architecture
- Be incompatible with your executable or patch level
- Hide the reason the original file disappeared
Never copy an unknown file to System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder merely because its filename matches. The safe sources are the game’s original installer, a trusted backup of that same installation, or the official launcher’s verified files.
If the error returns after reinstalling
Collect evidence before trying more replacements:
- Copy the complete error message.
- Record the executable named in the message.
- Record the full installation path.
- Check whether the DLL exists in that product’s
Systemfolder. - Review antivirus Protection history.
- Check whether a mod or unofficial patch changed the files.
- Look for a second installation being launched by the shortcut.
- Check file and folder permissions.
- Look for disk errors or a failing drive.
- Save relevant launcher or installation logs.
If the file disappears after every repair, antivirus removal, cloud synchronization, a cleanup program, disk problems, or unauthorized modifications may be involved. If it remains present but produces a Bad Image error, the installation may contain mixed versions or an incompatible dependency.
System Restore is a last resort when the failure began immediately after a system-wide change and a suitable restore point exists. Microsoft’s guide to point-in-time restore explains that it rolls back applications, settings, and system state.
