midi.dll Startup Errors: Repair the App Behind the File

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

midi.dll is not established as a standard Windows system DLL. If Windows says midi.dll is missing or could not be loaded, restore it through the application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement and copying it into System32.

The filename has conflicting public records. Some file catalogues describe it as Wav DLL, part of Wav Dynamic Link Library, while another inventory associates a different midi.dll with FL Studio. That means the error message and the file path are more useful than the filename alone.

Fix midi.dll errors in order

1. Identify the application that owns midi.dll

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

Read the complete error message before changing anything. Look for details such as:

  • The name of the application that failed
  • A full folder path
  • Whether the message says “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
  • Another DLL or runtime named in the same message

A path can identify the owner immediately. For example:

C:Program FilesExampleAppmidi.dll

usually points to ExampleApp, not Windows.

Also check the shortcut:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field.
  4. Note the folder containing the program executable.
  5. Compare that folder with the path shown in the error.

If no path appears, search for the file:

  1. Press Win + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Search for:
midi.dll
  1. Record every result, including its complete path.
  2. Do not copy, rename, or replace any result yet.

Identical filenames can belong to unrelated applications. A copy inside an audio program directory may not be interchangeable with one inside a game or older utility.

Windows’ documented MIDI components use names such as Winmm.dll, Wdmaud.drv, and MIDI device drivers. That is why a midi.dll found in an application folder should normally be treated as a private application file, not as a missing Windows component.

2. Repair or reinstall the application that reported the error

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

This is the most likely fix for an application-owned midi.dll.

First try the program’s own repair function:

  1. Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or the application entry on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If there is no repair option, use the application’s installer:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the affected program.
  2. Download the installer from the software publisher’s official website or account portal.
  3. Use the same product and edition you already own.
  4. If the installer offers Repair, choose it.
  5. Otherwise, install the current supported version over the existing installation.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the application from its normal shortcut.

Do not select a random midi.dll from another computer. The installer must restore the correct file, dependencies, permissions, and folder structure together.

FL Studio users

A third-party file inventory associates one midi.dll record with FL Studio 20.5.1.1193, but that does not prove every midi.dll belongs to FL Studio. If FL Studio is the program showing the error, use the current official Image-Line installer.

Image-Line’s documented installation approach allows the installer to run over an existing installation without first uninstalling it. Existing projects, settings, and plugins are intended to remain in place. Close FL Studio, run the official installer, keep the normal application components selected, restart Windows, and test the program.

If you need an older FL Studio release for a project, use the previous-release options available through your Image-Line account rather than using a DLL from an unrelated source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful repair normally means that the original application opens without the midi.dll message. If the error changes to name another DLL, repair the application again and record that new dependency instead of copying files individually.

3. Check Windows Security Protection History

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Antivirus software may have quarantined or removed an application DLL. Check before reinstalling repeatedly.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any detection associated with the affected application or its installation folder.
  8. Record the detection name and original file path.

Microsoft explains the Protection History workflow in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

Do not restore the file automatically. First verify that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The application came from its legitimate publisher.
  • The original path belongs to that application.
  • The installer was obtained from the publisher.
  • The detection is demonstrably a false positive.

If the file was removed from a trusted installation, reinstall the application from its official installer instead of restoring a questionable copy. If Windows Security detects the file again after reinstalling, stop restoring it repeatedly. Scan the installer, update security definitions, and contact the application publisher or security vendor.

A successful result is an application that starts after reinstalling and remains intact after the next security scan.

4. Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the architecture and dependencies expected by that application. A 32-bit and 64-bit file with the same name are not interchangeable.

Check the application’s installation location:

  • C:Program Files commonly contains 64-bit applications.
  • C:Program Files (x86) commonly contains 32-bit applications.

These locations are clues, not proof. Confirm the architecture through the application publisher’s documentation or installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A message such as “not designed to run on Windows” or status code 0xc000007b can indicate an architecture mismatch or a damaged dependency. The safe response is to reinstall the affected application and its officially required runtimes. Do not place a 32-bit file in System32, and do not place a 64-bit file in SysWOW64.

If the application is a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking function first. If verification fails, reinstall the game through its official launcher.

5. Reinstall a named runtime only when the error identifies it

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the filename contains “MIDI.” Those packages may be relevant only when:

  • The error names a runtime DLL from that package.
  • The application’s official requirements specify the package.
  • The application installer includes or repairs it.

If the error names a different missing dependency, write it down exactly. Repair the application first, then install the runtime from Microsoft or follow the publisher’s documented requirements.

The Windows optional-features screen is not a general DLL repair tool, but it can restore a feature when the error specifically identifies one:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the feature named by the application’s documentation.
  3. Select it if required.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.

Do not enable unrelated features in an attempt to make midi.dll appear.

6. Repair Windows components when other system files are failing

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when Windows itself shows broader corruption symptoms, such as several built-in applications failing, repeated protected-system-file errors, or problems that affect multiple unrelated programs.

They are not expected to recreate a private third-party midi.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains these commands and their output.

If DISM reports that it cannot complete, restart Windows, install pending updates, and run the command again. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files it could not repair, review the result and continue with application repair rather than expecting SFC to restore a third-party DLL.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns midi.dll.

7. Use System Restore after a recent system or application change

Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, application update, failed uninstall, or other system change.

  1. Save your work.
  2. Press Win + R.
  3. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

Microsoft states that System Restore normally reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs without affecting personal files. Its System Restore instructions explain the process.

After the restore, test the application. If the error returns after an update, repair or reinstall the application and check whether security software removed the file again.

8. Check MIDI hardware and drivers only when the error concerns a device

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A MIDI keyboard or interface can fail because of a driver problem, but a device-driver failure is not the same as a missing application midi.dll.

Check the device:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
  5. Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
  6. Right-click the affected device.
  7. Select Properties.
  8. Read the Device status message.
  9. Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer if one is required.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application’s MIDI settings.

If the device works in Windows but one program reports midi.dll, return to that program’s repair or reinstall process. Installing a hardware driver will not restore an application DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean comparing device IDs, Windows versions, and old package revisions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating; the full version performs the driver installation, and it cannot replace the application installer when midi.dll belongs to a specific program.

9. Do not use regsvr32 for a normal missing application DLL

Time needed: 2 minutes

Do not run:

regsvr32 midi.dll

unless the application publisher specifically tells you to do so.

Microsoft documents regsvr32 for registering self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs. A normal runtime or private application DLL may not contain the required DllRegisterServer entry point. Registration can therefore fail without repairing the missing dependency.

For midi.dll, reinstalling the owning application is normally the correct action. Registration does not fix a deleted file, restore its dependencies, or make an incompatible architecture work.

What the midi.dll records actually tell you

Public records do not establish one universal identity for this filename.

Some third-party catalogues describe a file with:

  • Description: Wav DLL
  • Product: Wav Dynamic Link Library
  • Version: 2.0.0.1
  • Size: approximately 80 KB
  • Developer: not identified

Those records also contain conflicting architecture information. Another third-party inventory lists a midi.dll in FL Studio 20.5.1.1193 and describes it as a PE32 Win32 DLL. These may be different binaries that happen to use the same filename.

Therefore, do not assume that every midi.dll is made by the same publisher, has the same size, or works in every program. The requesting application and its folder path determine the correct repair.

Why random DLL downloads usually fail

Downloading midi.dll from an unverified DLL site creates several risks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
  • It may belong to a different application.
  • It may have the wrong architecture.
  • It may be an incompatible version.
  • It may require other missing dependencies.
  • It may leave the application’s installation incomplete.
  • It may be removed again by antivirus software.

Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is especially unsafe. Those folders contain Windows components, and a third-party file with a familiar name does not become a Windows file by being placed there.

Use the affected application’s official installer, its repair function, or its official launcher verification process. Use Microsoft sources for Windows components and Microsoft-supported repair commands.

Common causes of a midi.dll error

Cause What usually fixes it
Damaged or incomplete application installation Repair or reinstall the owning application
Antivirus quarantine Review Protection History, verify the source, then reinstall if needed
Failed update or uninstall Reinstall the same application or current supported release
Wrong architecture or dependency Reinstall the application and its documented runtimes
Disk corruption or system crash Check disk health, restore a backup or restore point, then reinstall
Malware removal Complete a malware scan and reinstall from the official publisher
MIDI hardware-driver problem Reinstall the device manufacturer’s driver
Windows component corruption Run DISM and SFC when broader Windows symptoms exist

If reinstalling does not fix midi.dll

Work through these checks:

  1. Confirm that you are reinstalling the program named in the error.
  2. Search for every midi.dll and compare the paths.
  3. Check Protection History for repeated quarantine events.
  4. Make sure security software is not removing the file immediately after installation.
  5. Install the application outside a damaged or synchronized folder if the publisher supports that location.
  6. Check the disk for errors if files disappear or become corrupted.
  7. Confirm whether the application is an old 32-bit build.
  8. Verify game files through the official launcher.
  9. Read the full error for a second missing dependency.
  10. Contact the software publisher with the application name, version, Windows edition, full error text, and complete file path.

Do not send an unknown DLL to another computer as a test. Preserve the original error details so the publisher can identify the expected build.

FAQ

Is midi.dll a Windows system file?

There is no strong evidence that a file named exactly midi.dll is a standard Windows system DLL. Microsoft’s documented Windows MIDI stack uses other components, including Winmm.dll, drivers, and MIDI-related system modules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does midi.dll belong to Wav Dynamic Link Library?

Some public file records describe midi.dll as Wav DLL and part of Wav Dynamic Link Library, but the developer is not identified and the attribution is not authoritative. Use the application path to determine ownership.

Is midi.dll part of FL Studio?

A third-party inventory lists a midi.dll in one FL Studio release. That may be a product-specific copy and does not prove that every file with this name belongs to FL Studio. If FL Studio reports the error, repair it with the official Image-Line installer.

Should I copy midi.dll into System32?

No. Copying a third-party DLL into a Windows folder can create an architecture mismatch and does not repair the owning application.

Will SFC restore midi.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. An application-owned midi.dll should be restored by repairing or reinstalling its application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register midi.dll?

Normally no. regsvr32 is for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs, not ordinary runtime dependencies.

What if the file is quarantined?

Review the detection in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore it only when the application and file are trusted and the detection is confirmed to be a false positive. Otherwise, reinstall from the official publisher.

Can a MIDI driver fix the error?

Only if the actual problem is a hardware-driver failure. A device driver does not restore a missing midi.dll from an application folder.
