One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo improve Steam Link picture quality without making controls feel sluggish, tune the stream in this order: choose a stable quality preset, find the highest bandwidth limit that does not produce errors, cap resolution if the host cannot encode fast enough, then test hardware encoding for your GPU. Also check the host game frame rate, close software that interferes with capture or network traffic, and address audio or driver-specific problems. These steps apply to the Steam Link device interface and to Steam Big Picture Mode, with paths shown for each.
What causes poor Steam Link quality and input lag?
Steam Link captures the game on the host PC, encodes each frame, sends the video over your network, decodes it on the client, and sends controller input back. A problem at any stage can look like “lag,” but the remedy differs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Low streaming frame rate: Valve attributes this mainly to a low frame rate in the game itself or slow video encoding on the host computer.
- Network instability: Excessive bandwidth, interference, or competing traffic can cause dropped frames, pauses, and stream resets.
- Encoding trade-offs: Hardware encoding can reduce host workload, but its quality varies by GPU. Valve says results may improve or worsen when it is enabled.
- Display and audio issues: Resolution that is too high for the host or an incompatible audio sample rate can create stutter, distortion, or delay.
Because these causes overlap, change one setting at a time and test the same game scene after each change. That makes it possible to identify whether the bottleneck is the game, host encoding, network, or client.

Start with the Fast quality preset
Fast lowers streaming quality to prioritize a smoother connection. On a Steam Link device, open Settings > Streaming > Fast. In Big Picture Mode, select the settings icon beside the power icon in the upper-right corner, open In-Home Streaming, and under Client options select Fast. This is a useful first test when you see blocky video, hitching, or delayed input at higher quality.

Fast is a stability measure, not a guarantee that every type of lag will disappear. If the host game is rendering slowly or encoding cannot keep up, reducing stream quality alone will not fix the underlying frame-rate problem.
Find a stable bandwidth limit instead of choosing unlimited bandwidth
On a Steam Link device, go to Settings > Streaming > Advanced Client Options; press the controller’s Y button to open the advanced page, then adjust Bandwidth Limit. In Big Picture Mode, use the settings icon beside the power icon > In-Home Streaming > Advanced Client Options > Limit bandwidth.
- Begin at the lowest available bandwidth setting.
- Play long enough to reproduce the problem, including a busy scene or a network-heavy moment.
- Increase the limit one step at a time.
- When visual corruption, pauses, or control delay appears, return to the last setting that worked reliably.
- Select Automatic if you want Steam to restore its default bandwidth behavior.
Valve’s procedure specifically contradicts the idea that unlimited bandwidth is always best: a limit that is too aggressive for the connection can create instability, while a lower working value can produce a more responsive stream.

Lower resolution when frame rate or encoding is the bottleneck
Cap the Steam Link stream at 720p
If the stream has a low frame rate, test a lower client resolution. On the Steam Link device, open Settings > Streaming > Advanced Client Options and set Resolution Limit to 1280×720 (720p). In Big Picture Mode, open the settings icon beside the power icon > In-Home Streaming > Advanced Client Options > Limit resolution > 1280×720 (720p).

Reducing the stream’s resolution lowers the amount of video the host must encode and the client must decode. It is a diagnostic and recovery step, not a universal input-lag cure. Valve separates low streaming frame rate into game-performance and host-encoding causes, so a game that is already rendering below its target frame rate may require graphics changes on the host instead.
Lower the game’s own display resolution
Launch the affected game, open its graphics or display settings, and reduce the game resolution; Valve gives 1280×720 as an example. Test again before changing additional options. If the game’s frame rate rises and the stream becomes smooth, the original problem was likely render or encode workload rather than a controller setting.
Valve’s low-frame-rate troubleshooting guidance covers both the Steam Link resolution limit and the in-game resolution test.
Test host hardware encoding for your GPU
Change the setting before launching a game
In the Steam client or Big Picture Mode, open the settings menu > In-Home Streaming > Advanced Host Options. Change the applicable checkbox labeled Enable Hardware Encoding on… for NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Restart the test stream after each change so you can compare software encoding with the selected hardware encoder.
Change it while a game is running
Open the Steam overlay with the controller’s Guide button or Shift+Tab, choose In-Home Streaming > Modify Settings > Advanced Host Options, then change the relevant hardware-encoding checkbox. This lets you test without leaving the game, but use the same scene and settings for a meaningful comparison.

Valve explicitly says hardware encoding can improve or reduce stream quality depending on the GPU. Its current support text says that, in most cases, NVIDIA hardware encoding performs better than software encoding, while software encoding performs better than AMD hardware encoding. That is a general Valve observation, not a guarantee for every GPU generation or driver, so keep whichever mode gives the best combination of frame pacing, image quality, and control response on your system.
See Valve’s hardware-encoding procedure for both menu paths.
Fix audio problems that can accompany stream instability
Switch the host playback sample rate
Host playback rates of 44100 Hz and 48000 Hz generally work well for streaming. If you hear crackling or distortion, switch from one of those rates to the other in the host operating system’s sound-device settings, then reconnect and test. Do not assume that changing video settings will solve an audio-only fault.
Perform Valve’s headset isolation test
- Disconnect USB headsets and Bluetooth headsets from the host and Steam Link setup.
- Power-cycle the Steam Link.
- Retest game audio using the standard output path.
If the distortion disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the source.
These audio steps are included in Valve’s streaming-quality troubleshooting page.

Remove software and traffic that compete with streaming
Valve has documented streaming problems associated with certain background programs. Close or temporarily disable the following while testing:
- MSI Afterburner
- RivaTuner Statistics
- Razer Synapse
- ASUS AI Suite
- ZoneAlarm
- Skype or Skypehost
- Cloud-sync software such as MEGASync
- Screen-capture software such as Fraps
Other network activity can also affect the stream. Stop video services such as Netflix or Chromecast, music streaming such as Spotify, and large transfers including BitTorrent or file downloads. Test again after each category is stopped so you know which activity matters on your network.
Address the Windows 10 Killer E2200 edge case
Valve documents a memory-leak and performance-loss problem for Windows 10 systems using the E2200 Killer onboard network card. If that combination matches your host and performance degrades over time, apply the documented registry change:
- Open the Run dialog and enter
regedit. - Navigate to
ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ServicesNdu. - Select the value named Start.
- Change its value data to
4. - Restart the computer.
Editing the registry affects Windows networking behavior. Confirm that you are on the specified Windows 10/E2200 configuration before making the change, and keep a recovery plan in case the result is different from what you expect. The exact procedure is in Valve’s low-frame-rate support article.
SteamVR and AMD-specific limitations
Steam Link beta notes for SteamVR describe AMD GPU support as experimental. The notes identify recent AMD cards with HEVC hardware encoders, including the RX 570 and newer, while listing the RX 6400, RX 6500 XT, and most cards older than RX 570 as unsupported in that implementation because they lack HEVC support.

Keep Steam updated for networking fixes
Some improvements arrive in Steam software rather than through a user-facing setting. Valve has documented fixes for extra stream resets on unreliable networks, reduced the impact of resets, and corrected a networking-lag issue in non-optimal wireless configurations. If your settings are reasonable but resets continue, update the Steam client and Steam Link software before making more aggressive changes.

Reset Steam Link settings when troubleshooting has become tangled
If several experiments have left the client in an unknown state, Valve provides a reset option in the Steam Link beta build. The path is Settings > Streaming > Advanced options (Y) > Reset to Defaults (Y). The option appears only in the beta build; enroll through System settings if it is not visible. After resetting, retest with the default configuration, then change one control at a time.
Quick Recap
A practical order for diagnosing lag
| What you observe | First test | What the result indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Blocky video, pauses, or delayed controls during network activity | Choose Fast, then lower Bandwidth Limit gradually until the stream is stable | The previous quality or bandwidth target was too demanding for the connection at that time |
| Low stream frame rate even when the network is otherwise quiet | Check the game’s frame rate, set the client limit to 1280×720, and lower the game resolution | The game render workload or host encoding speed is the likely constraint |
| Quality changes dramatically when encoding mode changes | Compare hardware encoding on and off for the applicable NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel checkbox | The GPU’s encoder and driver behavior are affecting the result |
| Crackling or distorted sound with otherwise acceptable video | Switch host playback between 44100 Hz and 48000 Hz; then perform the headset isolation test | The audio format or USB/Bluetooth headset path is implicated |
| Performance worsens over time on a Windows 10 E2200 host | Apply Valve’s documented Ndu registry value change and restart | The specific Killer E2200 memory-leak issue may be involved |
| Persistent resets after settings changes | Update Steam, then use Reset to Defaults in the Steam Link beta if available | A software fix or a clean configuration is needed before further tuning |
Settings advice that should not be treated as universal
- “Enable NVFBC” is not a current universal fix. The term appears in an older 2016 community discussion, but it is not named in Valve’s current Steam Support procedures and should not be presented as a guaranteed latency setting. See the historical discussion at Steam Community only as context.
- Unlimited bandwidth is not automatically better. Valve’s current method is to start low, increase until problems appear, then return to the last stable value; Automatic restores default behavior.
- Hardware encoding should not always be enabled. Valve recommends experimenting because the result depends on the GPU.
- Lowering resolution does not fix every kind of lag. It addresses stream workload, while low game frame rate, host encoding, network instability, and interfering software require their own tests.
Recommended final configuration workflow
- Set the client to Fast and test a repeatable game scene.
- Use Bandwidth Limit from a low starting point; increase it only until instability appears, then step back or select Automatic.
- If frame rate remains low, set Resolution Limit to 1280×720 and lower the game’s own resolution.
- Compare hardware encoding on and off for the host GPU brand.
- Switch host audio between 44100 Hz and 48000 Hz if sound is distorted, and disconnect USB/Bluetooth headsets for the isolation test.
- Close the listed capture, overlay, security, sync, and streaming applications and stop large downloads while testing.
- Apply the E2200 registry procedure only when the Windows 10 hardware combination matches Valve’s documented case.
- Update Steam software; if experiments have become confusing, reset Steam Link defaults in the beta build and begin again with one change at a time.
