imsccfg.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Microsoft Pinyin IME. If Windows says imsccfg.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Chinese language and input features rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest repair sequence is to reinstall Chinese language features, install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker. These steps restore the correct Windows-managed files and dependencies for your edition and system architecture.
Fix 1: Reinstall Microsoft Pinyin
Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus restart time
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft Pinyin is managed through language settings. Removing and adding the Chinese language feature again is the best first fix when the error appears during sign-in, language switching, typing, or IME settings.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language > Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, select Chinese (Simplified).
- Select Language options.
- Under Keyboards, remove Microsoft Pinyin if it is listed.
- Return to Language & region.
- If Chinese (Simplified) is present, select its three-dot menu and choose Remove.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for Chinese (Simplified) and select Next.
- Leave the required language features selected, including the keyboard or handwriting features you use.
- Select Install.
- Open the new Chinese language entry, select Language options, and confirm that Microsoft Pinyin appears under keyboards.
Restart Windows and test typing with the language switcher on the taskbar. If the error no longer appears, the damaged or incomplete IME installation was the cause.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & Language > Language.
- Select Chinese (Simplified) under Preferred languages.
- Choose Options.
- Remove the Microsoft Pinyin keyboard if Windows allows it.
- Return to the language list and remove Chinese (Simplified).
- Select Add a preferred language.
- Choose Chinese (Simplified) and select Next.
- Select Install with the required language features.
- Open the language’s Options page and confirm that Microsoft Pinyin is installed.
If Chinese cannot be removed, sign out or restart first, then try again. If the language feature fails to install, continue with Windows Update and the repair commands below.
Microsoft’s language-pack instructions and Microsoft Simplified Chinese IME guide describe the supported settings path.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 minutes to several hours, depending on pending updates
A language feature can be incomplete after an interrupted update or servicing operation. Windows Update may contain the missing IME files or a corrected version.
- Open Start > Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates, including optional language or quality updates when relevant.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
- Test Microsoft Pinyin.
If the error began immediately after removing Chinese language support, an update, or a language-pack change, this step may restore the component without further repair.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use these commands when Windows reports that the file is missing even after reinstalling Chinese, or when other Windows components also behave incorrectly. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete successfully. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test Microsoft Pinyin.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the original action that produced the error. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM and SFC again after restarting. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance for supported installation-source options.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM makes it difficult to see what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what it finds; its repair functions require the full version, but it is not required for this Microsoft-supported repair sequence.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine Windows IME file, or it can identify a malicious file that merely uses the same name. Do not restore a quarantined file automatically.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
imsccfg.dll. - Note the file path and detection reason.
- If the file is in the normal Windows language or IME location, verify its Digital Signatures tab in File Explorer before considering restoration.
- Run a full scan.
- If the file is outside normal Windows locations, lacks a Microsoft signature, or is detected as a threat, leave it quarantined and remove it.
After handling the detection, reinstall Chinese (Simplified) through Settings and run DISM and SFC. That obtains a replacement through Windows servicing instead of restoring an uncertain copy.
Microsoft explains these controls in its Windows Security Protection history guide.
Fix 5: Check the file’s path and architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A 32-bit imsccfg.dll can be legitimate even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Windows supports 32-bit applications through WOW64, which uses separate handling and system locations for many 32-bit files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The important rule is that the process and DLL architecture must match:
- A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
- A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
- Copying an x86 file over an x64 Windows component can create a new load failure.
- Placing a DLL in an application folder can cause that application to load the wrong version.
Do not overwrite a file in System32 or SysWOW64 with a copy from another computer. Do not mix Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11 files.
Microsoft’s Pinyin IME update file table lists both x86 and x64 copies of imsccfg.dll, along with related files such as imsccore.dll, imsctip.dll, and imscui.dll. The documented Pinyin IME 2010 update lists version 14.0.7162.5000, with different sizes for x86 and x64 files. That does not make one version universal for every Windows release.

The often-indexed 10.1.7601.17514 file, approximately 124 KB, appears to be a Windows 7-era 32-bit variant. Treat it as historical metadata, not as the correct replacement for current Windows.
On Windows 7, language-pack behavior also differs by edition. Microsoft states that Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise can obtain language packs through Windows Update. Do not use an old Windows 7 DLL to repair Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 6: Update input-device drivers only when the symptom is broader
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A keyboard or touch-input driver does not normally provide imsccfg.dll, so driver replacement is not the primary repair for this file. Consider it only when the physical keyboard, touch input, or language-switching hardware also fails.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, and any category related to the failing input hardware.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Test Microsoft Pinyin again.
Do not remove random devices or update unrelated drivers to solve a Windows IME DLL error. When identifying stale drivers across several input devices manually becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation and repair functions require the full version, and Microsoft Pinyin itself still should be repaired through Windows language settings.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Use System Restore when the error started directly after an update, cleanup utility, language removal, driver change, or other system modification and the earlier fixes did not help.

- Choose a restore point dated before the first
imsccfg.dllerror. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications, drivers, and updates that may be reverted.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert applications, settings, and updates. It does not replace the need to scan for malware or repair a damaged language installation. Microsoft documents this process in its System Restore guidance.

Why Visual C++, DirectX, and regsvr32 usually do not help
imsccfg.dll is part of Microsoft Pinyin IME infrastructure, not a general Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or game library. Installing those packages is relevant only when the failing application separately documents that dependency.
regsvr32 is also not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that imsccfg.dll should be manually registered, so this is not a recommended fix:

regsvr32 imsccfg.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found” and distract from the actual language-component problem.
Do not download imsccfg.dll from a DLL archive
A replacement from an unverified download site can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows release, have incompatible dependencies, or simply fail to repair the damaged language installation. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also make Windows load the wrong file first.
The safe sources are Windows Settings, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, and Microsoft’s own Windows installation or recovery media when supported. If you find a file named imsccfg.dll outside normal Windows language or IME locations, check its Microsoft digital signature and scan it rather than assuming it is genuine.
Likely causes of the failure
| Symptom or recent change | Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears while switching languages or typing Chinese | Missing or damaged IME feature | Reinstall Chinese (Simplified) |
| Failure follows Windows Update or language servicing | Incomplete component installation | Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC |
| File appeared in antivirus quarantine | Genuine file removed or malicious impostor | Review Protection history and scan |
| Error follows disk cleanup or a failed update | System-file corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Error follows copying a DLL from another PC | Version or architecture mismatch | Remove the copied file and repair Windows |
| Only one old application reports the error | Application-specific loading issue | Repair or reinstall that application after Windows repair |
| File is outside Windows IME locations | Possible tampering or bundled copy | Verify signature and scan the system |
If language reinstallation, Windows Update, DISM, and SFC do not resolve the problem, inspect the application’s error details and Event Viewer, verify the file path and signature, and test a new Windows user profile. If the failure began after a known change, use System Restore. For persistent system-wide corruption, an in-place Windows repair may be appropriate.
FAQ
Is imsccfg.dll malware?
The filename itself is legitimate and associated with Microsoft Pinyin IME. A copy outside the expected Windows language or IME locations, without a Microsoft signature, or detected by reputable security software should be treated as suspicious.
Is it a Microsoft Pinyin IME 2010 or 2012 file?
Microsoft’s official update page located for this component identifies the relevant package as Pinyin IME 2010. Some third-party databases describe similar files as Microsoft Pinyin IME 2012, but those labels should not be used to choose a replacement DLL. Windows release, language installation, architecture, and servicing state determine the correct file.
Can I fix it by copying a 32-bit file to 64-bit Windows?
No. A 32-bit file may be valid on 64-bit Windows when used by a 32-bit process, but it must not replace a 64-bit component. Repair the language feature so Windows selects the correct architecture.
What if Windows says the specified module could not be found?
The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstall Microsoft Pinyin, apply updates, and run DISM followed by SFC. Avoid guessing at dependencies by downloading unrelated runtime packages.
Should I register imsccfg.dll?
No. There is no supported reason to manually register this Windows IME component with regsvr32.
What is the final repair if nothing works?
After verifying the path and signature, reviewing antivirus history, and completing language reinstallation plus DISM and SFC, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair. If only one application fails, repair that application as well.
