Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
auui.dll is normally an Adobe Audition application file, not a Windows system component. If auui.dll is missing, Windows may prevent Adobe Audition from starting.
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: it should normally be Adobe Audition.
- When it happens: after an update, crash, reinstall, antivirus detection, or failed startup.
- The exact wording: the named file may be missing, or a dependency may be missing instead.
- The installation location: an Audition file may be under a path such as
C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Audition CC 2019. - The application architecture: catalogued Audition CC 2019 copies of this file are 64-bit, but other Audition releases can use different builds.
Do not begin by downloading auui.dll from a random DLL website. A file from the wrong Audition release or architecture can create version conflicts, expose your PC to malware, and still leave the actual installation problem unresolved.
1. Repair Adobe Audition through Creative Cloud
An incomplete or corrupted Audition installation is the most likely cause. Replace the complete application rather than copying a single DLL.
Reinstall Audition
- Save your work and close Adobe Audition.
- Close the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Open Creative Cloud again.
- Select Apps and then All Apps.
- Find Audition.
- Select the three-dot More actions menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Keep your preferences initially. Remove them only if you also suspect damaged Audition settings.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud and install Audition again.
After installation, launch Audition from the Start menu. If it opens normally and the error does not return, the application files were probably incomplete or mismatched.

If Creative Cloud reports Audition as installed but the program is missing or will not uninstall, use Adobe’s proper uninstaller rather than manually deleting the Audition folder. If Creative Cloud itself is damaged, choose its Repair option first. If repair fails, uninstall and reinstall Creative Cloud. Adobe also provides a Cleaner Tool for persistent installation records.
Check available Audition versions
Creative Cloud generally offers current and previous major releases, not every historical Audition version. If you need an older release such as Audition CC 2019, do not substitute auui.dll from a newer or older version.
Instead, verify your Adobe entitlement and use a legitimate original installer or obtain the installer through your organization’s Adobe administrator. Do not mix files from another PC, even if both computers use Windows.
2. Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file. Check this before attempting manual file replacement.
Review Windows Security Protection History
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a recent detection involving Adobe Audition or
auui.dll. - Expand the detection to review its location and details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- Audition came from Adobe or a legitimate organization-managed installation.
- The detected file was inside the expected Audition installation folder.
- You have no reason to believe the installation was modified or copied from an untrusted source.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. The safer response is usually to remove the affected Audition installation and reinstall it from Adobe, then run a security scan.
If endpoint-security software blocks the installer or repeatedly removes the file, contact the administrator managing that security product. Do not permanently disable protection just to make the DLL appear.
3. Read the error carefully for a missing dependency
A message naming auui.dll does not always mean that the file itself is absent. Windows can report “The specified module could not be found” when a dependency required by that DLL cannot load.
Reported messages can include:
The program can't start because auui.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
There was a problem starting auui.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
Error loading auui.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
You may also see wording that says the code cannot proceed because auui.dll was not found, or that the file is not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
If the message instead names MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or another Microsoft runtime file, repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
Repair the Visual C++ runtime
- Identify whether the affected Audition installation is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Download the matching package from Microsoft:
- x64 Visual C++ Redistributable
- x86 Visual C++ Redistributable
- Run the installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Audition again.
Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads explain the available architectures and supported packages.
Installing Visual C++ does not recreate a missing proprietary auui.dll. It only addresses a missing or damaged Microsoft runtime dependency. If the dialog still names auui.dll, return to the complete Audition reinstall.

4. Confirm the file path, signature, and architecture
If a copy of the file exists, inspect it instead of copying it elsewhere.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the Adobe Audition installation folder.
- Search that folder for
auui.dll. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Check the Location shown on the General tab.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A file inside the Audition folder is more plausible than one in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. auui.dll is not established as a protected Windows component, so do not treat those system folders as its normal location.
The exact version depends on the Audition release. Public records show different catalogued versions across releases, and third-party metadata is not Adobe’s official file manifest. Do not compare only the filename. A similarly named file from Audition 2017, Audition CC 2019, or another computer may be incompatible.
If the file exists but Audition still reports a load failure, the problem may involve:

- An invalid digital signature.
- Mixed files from different Audition releases.
- File permissions.
- Antivirus or endpoint-security blocking.
- A damaged user profile.
- A failed update.
A clean reinstall is safer than replacing just this file.
5. Update Windows and check related drivers
A missing application DLL is not normally fixed by reinstalling a display or audio driver, but Audition can also fail after a broader system or driver change. Update Windows and inspect the drivers used by your audio hardware.
Run Windows Update
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Check drivers in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click your audio device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant display or chipset devices if they show a warning icon.
- Restart Windows.
Do not download a driver from an unknown driver archive. Use Windows Update, the PC manufacturer, or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.
When several devices need checking, manually identifying each model and matching versions can be repetitive. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that shows which drivers are outdated; driver installation and repair are handled by the full version. Reinstalling Adobe Audition remains the definitive fix when auui.dll itself is missing.

auui.dll appears to belong to Adobe Audition, not Windows. Therefore, System File Checker and DISM should not be your first repair for this specific error.
Use them when Windows itself is showing broader symptoms, such as multiple unrelated applications failing, damaged system components, or update problems.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Audition again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
These commands can repair protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They will not normally restore a proprietary Adobe DLL. If you keep repeating them without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected system issues; repairs are completed by the full version. Adobe Audition still needs to be repaired or reinstalled when its own files are damaged.

7. Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it does not download a missing file, rebuild Audition, or repair its internal dependencies.
Avoid commands such as:
regsvr32 auui.dll
They can produce another error and distract from the real cause. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration tool, not a solution for missing Adobe application files.
Also avoid copying auui.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
or into another application’s folder. The correct location is the Audition installation directory, and the correct build must match the installed release.
8. Try System Restore after a recent failed change
If Audition worked until a recent installation, update, or system change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove programs, drivers, and settings added after the selected restore point. It is not a harmless first step. See Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.
If reinstalling Audition does not fix it
Check these points in order:
- Read the complete error, including any dependency filename.
- Verify that
auui.dllis inside the expected Audition folder. - Check its digital signature and file permissions.
- Confirm that Creative Cloud installed one consistent Audition release.
- Check Protection History again for a new quarantine event.
- Ensure the drive has free space.
- Test Audition from a new Windows user account if the installation is valid but only one profile fails.
- Review Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application for an Audition or application error.
- Contact Adobe or your organization’s administrator if the required legacy release is no longer offered through Creative Cloud.
If Audition starts after reinstall but later crashes, investigate plug-ins, audio drivers, preferences, and licensing separately. The missing-DLL message may have been only the first visible symptom.
FAQ
Is auui.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence establishes it as a normal Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Microsoft redistributable component. It appears to be an Adobe Audition application DLL.
Which program uses auui.dll?
Adobe Audition uses the filename across multiple releases, including older Creative Cloud versions. The correct file depends on the installed Audition version.
Should I download auui.dll separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or belong to another Audition release. Repair or reinstall Audition through Creative Cloud instead.
Is auui.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Catalogued Adobe Audition CC 2019 copies are identified as 64-bit, but that does not prove every historical Audition build uses the same architecture or version. Match the file and dependencies to the installed release.
Why does Windows say “The specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency required by auui.dll may be missing. Check whether the dialog names MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or another runtime file, then repair the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
Can regsvr32 fix the problem?
Generally, no. It registers compatible self-registering DLLs; it does not repair Adobe Audition’s installation or restore missing dependencies.
