It belongs to Microsoft IME 2002, an old East Asian Input Method Editor used by Windows XP-era language components and Office language tools.
The safest fix is to identify the old program requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that parent program. Downloading a replacement DLL or running regsvr32 usually treats the symptom rather than restoring the correct IME files.

Why the error appears
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because imskf.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because imskf.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “A required component is missing: imskf.dll.”
- “Error loading imskf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “imskf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “imskf.dll file could not be loaded.”
These errors commonly begin after:
- Repairing or uninstalling Office
- Removing an East Asian language pack
- Restoring an old Windows XP image
- Moving an old program to another PC
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- Disk cleanup or manual file deletion
- Installing only part of Office Proofing Tools
- Launching a legacy program that still expects the old IME
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that imskf.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL can also be missing.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 1: Identify and repair the parent program
This is the most important step. Do not begin by searching for the filename. Find out which application is calling it.
Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and message carefully. The application name may appear before the DLL error. Check the shortcut you used to start the program, including:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note whether the program belongs to Office, an old editor, a language tool, or another legacy application.
If the error appears during startup, open Event Viewer:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Check the General and Details tabs for the application name and failing module.
The goal is to restore the installation that originally supplied the file, not to place an arbitrary copy in a system folder.

Repair Office or its language tools
For an old Office installation:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Office or the relevant Office language package.
- Select Change.
- Choose Repair, Detect and Repair, or the equivalent maintenance option.
- Follow the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program that previously reported the error.
On Windows XP, the comparable path is:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Add or Remove Programs.
- Select Microsoft Office.
- Select Change.
- Choose Repair or Detect and Repair.
- Provide the original Office media if Setup requests it.
If the repair wizard does not list the language component, the original Office Proofing Tools or language media may be required. Office 2003 is unsupported, so its installer may not behave reliably on a current operating system. Microsoft lists Office 2003 as having reached the end of extended support.
If repair fails, uninstall the affected Office or language component from the same Control Panel location and reinstall it from trusted original media. Restart between removal and installation when Setup requests it.
Repair the old application itself
If only one old application reports the error:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if available.
- Install its language or East Asian input components.
- Restart the application.
If no repair option exists, reinstall the application using its original installer. Do not copy imskf.dll from another computer into the application directory. A private copy may have to match the application’s other IME files and dependencies.
Fix 2: Restore Windows XP language support
This applies to Windows XP or an old Windows XP installation running in a controlled legacy environment. It is not a guaranteed method for restoring imskf.dll on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Windows XP did not install East Asian IMEs by default. The language files were added through Regional and Language Options and may require the original Windows installation media.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Regional and Language Options.
- Open the Languages tab.
- Select Install files for East Asian languages.
- Insert the Windows XP installation CD if requested.
- Allow Setup to copy the language files.
- Return to Regional and Language Options.
- Select Details.
- Select Add.
- Choose the required input language and keyboard or IME.
- Select OK, then Apply.
- Restart Windows.
If the required IME is part of Office rather than Windows, use the Office maintenance installer instead. Adding a Windows language component cannot guarantee that an Office-specific build of imskf.dll will be restored.
Fix 3: Reinstall a current Windows language pack only when appropriate
Windows 10 and Windows 11 use newer first-party language components. To add a current language:

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for the required language.
- Select Next.
- Choose the language features you need.
- Select Install.
- Restart the affected application.
On some Windows versions, the path is Settings → Time & Language → Language.
This can restore current input support, but it should not be described as a guaranteed way to recreate the old imskf.dll. If an old program specifically requires Microsoft IME 2002, repairing or reinstalling that program remains the correct approach.
Fix 4: Repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when multiple Windows components are malfunctioning, system files were damaged, or the error began after a failed update or disk problem. They are not substitutes for reinstalling an old Office language package.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM may take time and can appear to pause. Do not close the administrator window while it is working.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the program. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow. If the error remains limited to one obsolete application, return to that application’s installer rather than repeatedly running system repair.
Running these commands manually means reading logs and working out whether the repair changed the component you need. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for repair issues and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required and reinstalling the original application remains the definitive fix for an app-specific imskf.dll error.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine safely
If the file existed previously and disappeared after a security scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Check the detected file path, publisher, and reason for quarantine.
- Do not restore the file if it came from an unknown download or an unexpected folder.
- If the file came from trusted original Microsoft or Office media, restore it only after confirming the parent installation.
- Repair or reinstall the parent product afterward.
- Run another scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to install a DLL from the internet. A genuine Microsoft file should be validated by its original installation source, digital signature, path, and matching product version.
Fix 6: Verify architecture and version
Common public records identify imskf.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That does not make every 32-bit copy interchangeable.
An Office 2003 language component may use a later 9.x build, while an Office XP or Windows XP installation may expect an 8.1-era build. A file that has the right name can still be the wrong version.
Remember:
- A 32-bit DLL is not made compatible with a 64-bit application by copying it into another folder.
System32is not a “64-bit DLL folder” in the simple way many guides describe.SysWOW64is part of Windows’ 32-bit compatibility system, not a universal destination for downloaded files.- The correct location depends on the parent product and how its installer registered or loads the component.
- A program may carry a private copy beside its executable.
Check the file, if present, by right-clicking it and selecting Properties → Details. Review the description, publisher, version, and path. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to reinstall from trusted media, not a reason to search for another download.
Fix 7: Do not use Device Manager for this DLL
imskf.dll is not a hardware driver. Device Manager cannot restore Microsoft IME 2002.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can open Device Manager with:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
However, updating a display, chipset, audio, or keyboard driver will not normally replace this file. Investigate Device Manager only if the same failure also includes an actual hardware problem, such as a missing keyboard device or an input device with an error icon.
If you are trying to keep old hardware drivers current, manually identifying the correct model and package can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; the full version installs driver updates, but it will not replace the legacy IME component, and the original application installer remains the correct fix here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 imskf.dll is usually wrong
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Many ordinary runtime, language, and IME DLLs do not provide that entry point.

Running:
regsvr32 imskf.dll
may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point could not be found. That does not prove the file is corrupt. It usually means registration is not how that DLL is installed or used.
Use regsvr32 only when the product’s official installer documentation specifically requires it. Do not use it as a general missing-DLL repair command.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Avoid DLL download websites and reposted files. A downloaded copy may contain malware, belong to a different Office release, have the wrong architecture, lack a valid signature, or fail because another dependency is missing.
The safe sources are:
- The original Windows installation media
- The original Office or Proofing Tools media
- The affected application’s trusted installer
- Microsoft’s official Windows repair tools
- Microsoft’s official language-pack and update channels
Do not copy it into system folders first
Do not manually place a file in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder as the first repair. This can create duplicate, incompatible copies and obscure which product owns the file.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
The .dll extension does not mean that Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET will restore imskf.dll. There is no evidence that this file belongs to those runtime packages.
Do not assume current Windows should contain it
A normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation does not necessarily include imskf.dll. Its absence by itself is not proof that Windows is damaged.
If the original program is unavailable
If you no longer have the original installer:
- Identify the exact application from the shortcut or Event Viewer.
- Check whether you have original installation media or a legitimate backup.
- Look for the application’s own repair or migration documentation.
- Reinstall a supported replacement program if the old application cannot be restored.
- Keep the old installation isolated if it must run for compatibility reasons.
- Avoid using an unverified DLL archive as a substitute for the missing product.
Office 2003 and Windows XP are legacy platforms. Even if the file is genuine, restoring an old component does not make the surrounding software current or supported.
FAQ
Is imskf.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft IME 2002 component. A file with that name in an unexpected folder, with an invalid signature, or obtained from an untrusted download should be treated cautiously. Scan it and compare it with trusted installation media.
Should I download imskf.dll?
No. Restore it through the original Windows, Office, language-tool, or application installer. Multiple legitimate builds exist, so a generic replacement may be wrong.
Recommended Free Tools
Is imskf.dll part of Windows 11?
Not normally. It is legacy Microsoft IME 2002 technology associated mainly with Windows XP-era language support and older Office products.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Common public records identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That does not mean every 32-bit build is interchangeable, and it does not make it suitable for a 64-bit program.
Will installing a Windows language pack fix it?
It may install a current IME, but it is not guaranteed to restore the legacy imskf.dll. Repair the program that requested the file.
Does regsvr32 fix the problem?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. Repairing the parent installation is the normal fix for this IME component.
What if the message says “specified module could not be found”?
Check the parent application and its adjacent files. The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstalling the complete product is safer than adding individual files.
What is the correct fix on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Find the legacy application, Office language component, or compatibility package requesting the file. Repair or reinstall that product from trusted media, then use DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is plausible.
