Copilot+ PCs delivered their clearest value through battery life, efficiency, local accessibility tools, and stronger thin-and-light graphics—not through a sudden revolution in AI gaming. In a December 27, 2024 interview with Laptop Mag, AMD corporate vice president Jason Banta argued that gaming could become the next major use for AI-capable PCs, including more dynamic worlds and AI-enabled non-player characters.
That vision was forward-looking. The first year of Copilot+ PCs showed that better hardware could make Windows laptops more useful and efficient, but an NPU alone could not give games smarter characters or higher frame rates.
What Copilot+ PCs actually added
Microsoft introduced Copilot+ PCs on May 20, 2024. The designation applied to Windows laptops equipped with an NPU capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second, or 40 TOPS, for selected local AI workloads.
The badge covered a mix of hardware and software features, including:

Copilot+ PC should not be confused with the Copilot application. The app and cloud-based Copilot services are not exclusive to this class of laptop. The platform designation refers primarily to the combination of an eligible NPU and Windows features designed to use it.
Local processing can reduce network dependence and may offer privacy advantages for supported tasks. It does not mean every AI request runs on the laptop, nor does it guarantee that all features work offline.
Did Copilot+ PCs beat the hype?
In Laptop Mag’s 2024 assessment, the answer was a qualified yes. Reviews of systems using AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm processors found meaningful gains in battery life and general efficiency. Those improvements mattered even to buyers who had little interest in generative AI.
The strongest example was the Qualcomm-powered Lenovo ThinkPad T14s, which Laptop Mag reported exceeding 21 hours in its battery test. That result belonged to a specific configuration and testing method; it was not a promise that every Copilot+ laptop would last that long.

Battery endurance also depends on the display, battery capacity, firmware, cooling, power settings, browser activity, and applications. The NPU may improve efficiency for particular AI workloads, but it should not receive automatic credit for every improvement in battery life.
Features such as Live Captions and Studio Effects were more immediately practical than many of the category’s headline-generating features. They could help with accessibility, video calls, and everyday communication without requiring users to adopt an entirely new AI workflow.
The qualification is important: software availability was evolving, some features were narrow or region-dependent, and several advertised capabilities depended on Windows updates. Copilot+ PCs were not a transformation of ordinary laptop use for everyone. Their most durable first-generation advantage was arguably efficient laptop design, with local AI hardware as an additional capability.

Why AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 laptops stood out
AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series gave the Copilot+ category a particularly useful option for Windows users who also cared about graphics performance and compatibility. Processors such as the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 paired an NPU with conventional x86 Windows support and unusually capable integrated graphics for thin-and-light laptops.
Laptop Mag used the Asus Zenbook S 16 as an example. In its reported comparison, the AMD laptop averaged roughly three times the frames per second of the Qualcomm-powered Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. That was a publication-specific test result, not a universal statement about every Ryzen AI 300 or Snapdragon X configuration, and performance varies by game, memory, cooling, resolution, and power settings.
Still, the comparison illustrated AMD’s practical argument. A thin-and-light Copilot+ laptop did not have to sacrifice all gaming ability for battery life. Strong integrated graphics could handle esports titles, older games, strategy games, and modern games at reduced settings more comfortably than many previous ultraportables.
That does not make a Ryzen AI laptop equivalent to a gaming machine with a dedicated GPU. A discrete graphics processor remains the better choice for demanding AAA games, ray tracing, high resolutions, high refresh rates, and sustained performance.
AMD versus Qualcomm: compatibility mattered as much as speed
Early Copilot+ laptops based on Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors used Arm architecture. Arm systems offered strong efficiency and could run many Windows applications, either natively or through emulation. But early buyers had to check their specific software and games rather than assume universal compatibility.

Laptop Mag cited Apex Legends as an example of a game that could not run on the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x because of anti-cheat-related incompatibility at the time.
This was an early Windows-on-Arm limitation, not proof that every Qualcomm laptop was unsuitable for gaming or that the problem would never change. The practical lesson was narrower: before buying an Arm Windows laptop, verify the exact game, launcher, drivers, and anti-cheat system.

AMD’s x86 systems offered broader compatibility with legacy Windows applications and conventional PC games, with less dependence on emulation. That made Ryzen AI laptops a safer choice for buyers who wanted one machine for productivity and a broad existing game library.
What AMD meant by “gaming is next”
Banta described a future in which AI could create more immersive environments, AI-enabled NPCs, and more realistic, dynamic interactions. AMD’s argument was that NPUs could give developers a local source of AI processing without sending every interaction to a remote server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThose comments were a forecast, not evidence that AI-generated NPCs had become a mainstream feature in 2024 games. The hardware created an opportunity; developers still had to build the feature into each game.
AI-enabled characters would require models small and efficient enough to run within a laptop’s memory and power limits. Developers would also need to control behavior for narrative consistency, game balance, safety, moderation, and reproducibility. A cloud model could be larger and more capable, but it would add latency, connectivity requirements, server costs, and dependence on an external service.
Local models could reduce latency and improve privacy, but they would generally have less room for complexity than large cloud systems. Games would also need safeguards against abusive or unpredictable player interactions.

The distinction between AI processing and graphics rendering is central. An NPU is optimized for certain machine-learning inference tasks. It does not automatically improve a game’s frame rate, render ray-traced lighting, or replace a dedicated GPU.

- GPU-based upscaling and frame-generation technologies.
- More efficient CPU and GPU scheduling.
- Voice, camera, accessibility, and companion tools.
- Developer experimentation with small local models.
That is why AMD’s vision should be read as a roadmap argument rather than a finished product feature. The NPU can help make new game systems possible, but it cannot make developers adopt them.
What buyers should actually check
- Confirm the exact processor. “Copilot+ PC” does not identify the laptop’s CPU, graphics performance, cooling, or battery capacity.
- Check the architecture. AMD Ryzen AI systems use x86. Qualcomm Snapdragon X systems use Arm and may depend on native support or emulation.
- Verify every important game. Check the game’s launcher, drivers, and anti-cheat requirements before choosing Windows on Arm.
- Separate integrated and dedicated graphics. Integrated graphics can suit lighter gaming, while demanding AAA titles generally need a discrete GPU.
- Evaluate the display and cooling. A high-resolution, high-refresh OLED panel can reduce battery life, while thin cooling systems may limit sustained gaming performance.
- Treat future AI features as optional upside. Buy for the laptop’s current battery life, performance, compatibility, and build quality—not for an unproven promise about future NPCs.
Who should consider one?
A Copilot+ thin-and-light made the most sense for users who prioritized portability, quiet operation, long battery life, webcam effects, live captions, and occasional gaming. AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 systems were especially attractive to Windows buyers who wanted strong integrated graphics without giving up broad x86 compatibility.
Serious PC gamers should be more cautious. If the goal is high-refresh-rate AAA gaming, ray tracing, or sustained performance, a conventional gaming laptop with a dedicated GPU remains the more relevant category, regardless of whether it carries a Copilot+ badge.
Qualcomm-based Copilot+ laptops could suit buyers whose productivity applications were confirmed to work correctly and who valued battery endurance above broad game compatibility. A MacBook Air M3 was a sensible alternative for users already committed to macOS, provided their software and game libraries supported Apple’s platform.
The first Copilot+ PCs launched in a premium market, with Laptop Mag describing the initial range as starting at roughly $999 and highlighting systems such as the Asus Zenbook S 14 at about $1,499 MSRP in its 2024 buying context. Those figures are historical launch-era signals, not current 2026 prices.
The verdict from the first year
Copilot+ PCs proved more substantial than a marketing label, but not for the reason many launch headlines suggested. Their early value came from efficient processors, long battery life, useful camera and captioning features, and—in AMD’s case—strong integrated graphics with familiar Windows compatibility.
AI gaming was the more ambitious promise. AMD’s ideas about intelligent NPCs and dynamic worlds identified a plausible direction, but commercial success depended on game developers, model design, power limits, moderation, and platform support. In 2024, the Copilot+ badge signaled an opportunity for AI in games, not a finished gaming revolution.
