Bethesda added AMD FSR 3.1 upscaling and frame generation in Update 3 on February 20, 2025. For owners of handheld PCs such as the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, AYANEO devices and Steam Deck, that makes the demanding adventure more flexible—but it does not guarantee a smooth 60 frames per second on every system.
The original announcement is now outdated
When Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launched on PC and Xbox on December 8, 2024, Bethesda said AMD FSR support was being developed for a future update. That was good news for handheld owners, but it described planned functionality rather than an immediate performance improvement. Bethesda’s first update announcement is therefore useful historical context, not a description of the game’s current feature set.

Why this game needs every performance option it can get
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is an unusually demanding PC game. Its official PC requirements list hardware ray tracing as required, with a minimum target of 16GB of RAM, 120GB of storage and a desktop-class graphics baseline including an RTX 2060 Super 8GB, Radeon RX 6600 8GB or Intel Arc A580. The recommended specification rises to 32GB of RAM and an RTX 3080 Ti 12GB or Radeon RX 7700 XT 12GB-class GPU.
Those requirements are not a direct benchmark for a handheld. They do, however, explain why integrated GPUs face a difficult workload involving large environments, foliage, lighting, traversal and ray-traced effects. A handheld has far less GPU headroom than a desktop graphics card and must share power, cooling and system memory with the CPU.
FSR can reduce one of those pressures: the cost of rendering each frame.

AMD FSR is a family of technologies rather than one single setting. In this game, the two relevant features are upscaling and frame generation.
FSR upscaling
With upscaling enabled, the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image for the display output. For example, a handheld may output at 1080p or 1200p while rendering internally below that resolution. The lower internal workload can give the GPU more room to maintain a steadier frame rate.
That trade-off is often attractive on a small handheld screen. It can be preferable to rendering natively at the display resolution and suffering uneven frame times. However, aggressive upscaling can soften fine detail, cause shimmer or ghosting and make text or foliage less convincing. FSR does not automatically improve image quality in every mode; its result depends on the internal resolution, motion and scene complexity. AMD’s FSR overview provides the technology’s general background.

FSR frame generation
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between conventionally rendered frames. That can make camera movement appear smoother, but it does not mean the game is simulating twice as many gameplay frames. Input and game logic still depend on the underlying rendered frames.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrame generation also works best when the base frame rate is already reasonably stable. If the game is producing inconsistent frames, generating more images on top of that instability will not fix the underlying problem. Some players may notice extra latency or artifacts around fast-moving objects, particles, foliage or Indiana’s whip.
For that reason, “FSR doubles FPS” is not a responsible general description. Any such claim requires a named handheld, power profile, resolution, graphics settings, game version and benchmark method.
Which handhelds benefit most?
“AMD handheld” is not a single performance category. Results vary according to the APU, cooling system, memory bandwidth, shared-memory allocation, driver stack, display resolution and sustained power limit.
Windows AMD handhelds
The ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go and many AYANEO systems are relevant examples. Newer Ryzen-based handhelds also offer different performance classes depending on their processor and cooling design.

Windows handhelds commonly expose configurable power profiles. A system running at 15W may behave very differently from the same system running at 25W or more while plugged in. A larger output resolution can also erase some of the benefit of upscaling. Owners should therefore treat FSR as a useful control, not as a universal performance guarantee.

Steam Deck
Official Steam coverage identifies the game as Steam Deck Verified. That is meaningful platform-level validation, but it does not imply high settings, full ray tracing or a locked 60 FPS. Steam Deck has a different APU, memory configuration, operating system, display and power envelope from Z1 Extreme-class Windows handhelds.
The official Steam Deck coverage should be read alongside the game’s published PC requirements. “Verified” means the game has been made compatible with the platform’s experience; it is not a promise about every graphics preset or frame-rate target.
Nintendo Switch 2 is a separate case
Nintendo Switch 2 should not be grouped into the AMD-handheld discussion. Update 8 included Switch 2 launch features, but that platform has different hardware, software and optimization considerations from Windows Ryzen handhelds and Steam Deck.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA sensible way to configure FSR
Use these as starting principles rather than universal prescriptions:
- Update the game first. Install the latest game update, then update the handheld’s graphics driver and firmware.
- Choose a realistic target. Begin with a stable 30 FPS target, or 40 FPS where the device and display support it, instead of assuming 60 FPS is necessary.
- Test upscaling before frame generation. Enable FSR 3.1 upscaling and evaluate image quality, frame pacing and responsiveness on its own.
- Reduce expensive settings when necessary. Lowering demanding graphics options can be better than selecting an extremely aggressive upscaling mode.
- Only then test frame generation. Use it when the underlying frame rate is stable enough that added displayed frames improve motion rather than masking stutter.
- Test battery and plugged-in play separately. A 25W or 30W plugged-in profile may not reflect performance at a lower portable power limit, and higher wattage can reduce battery life.
- Recheck after patches. Performance behaviour and memory management can change between game builds.
The exact menu labels and available options can vary by platform and build, so it is better to describe this as a testing sequence than to promise one fixed menu path for every handheld.
What FSR cannot solve
- CPU bottlenecks: Upscaling mainly reduces GPU rendering work. It cannot remove a CPU limit caused by simulation, traversal or other game workloads.
- Memory constraints: Shared-memory bandwidth, available VRAM and system-memory pressure can still restrict performance.
- Shader or traversal stutter: A higher displayed frame rate does not automatically eliminate inconsistent frame times.
- Thermal throttling: A handheld that starts quickly may slow down after heat builds up.
- Ray-tracing costs: The game’s hardware-ray-tracing requirement remains relevant. FSR alone does not make full ray tracing or path tracing practical on every integrated GPU.
- Input latency: Frame generation can make motion look smoother while controls still feel closer to the underlying base frame rate.
- Low-resolution artifacts: If the internal resolution becomes too low, reconstructed detail may look soft, unstable or distracting.
Later updates matter when reading older coverage
Launch-day reports should be labelled by their game version. Bethesda’s Update 8, dated May 12, 2026, included CPU optimizations made in preparation for the Nintendo Switch 2 release and fixed an issue in which VRAM reserved by AMD FSR was not released when switching to another upscaler.

That does not mean Update 8 solved every FSR or handheld performance problem. It does mean that older reports about this specific memory-management issue may no longer describe the current build.
Should you buy the game or upgrade your handheld?
If you already own a capable AMD handheld, FSR 3.1 makes the game more worth trying. It gives you more flexibility to balance resolution, image quality, power consumption and frame pacing. It is especially useful when the GPU is the main limitation and your target is a stable 30 or 40 FPS.
It is not a strong reason by itself to buy a new handheld. When comparing devices, sustained GPU power, cooling, memory bandwidth, display resolution, battery capacity, driver support and warranty service matter at least as much as whether the product supports FSR.
Steam Deck owners can consider the Steam version if they are comfortable with a platform-specific, likely 30-FPS-oriented experience. Owners seeking the strongest local performance should compare higher-power Windows handhelds, but exact results depend on the game build, wattage and settings.
If local performance is not sufficient, check current PC Game Pass and cloud-gaming availability before buying. Cloud options can avoid local hardware limits, but they depend on subscription terms, bandwidth and latency. Availability changes, so verify the current catalogue before relying on it.
Verdict
AMD FSR support is genuinely good news for handheld owners—but the important news is no longer that it is coming. AMD FSR 3.1 upscaling and frame generation have been available since Update 3 on February 20, 2025.
Upscaling can reduce GPU workload and help a handheld pursue a steadier frame rate. Frame generation can make motion appear smoother when the base frame rate is already solid. Neither feature guarantees 60 FPS, removes CPU limits or makes every ray-traced setting practical.
For the best result, start with FSR upscaling, aim for consistent frame pacing, and treat frame generation as an optional second step—not a substitute for suitable hardware and sensible settings.
