Inside the making of Rockstar’s GTA VI: an eight-year production, 4,711 staff and a $3 billion sales forecast

GTA VI is the product of more than eight years of full development, a much larger Rockstar organization and repeated attempts to control an unusually ambitious open world. Bloomberg Businessweek’s October 14, 2026 report describes research trips to Miami, the real-world reference for Vice City, delays and a process in which Rockstar expanded some ideas while narrowing others to make the project manageable.

Rockstar’s official release information lists November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Unnamed analysts cited in the same period forecast 40 million copies sold and more than $3 billion in revenue during the first four months; those figures are estimates, not company guidance or audited results.

Inside the making of GTA VI: why this production became so large

The game has been in full development for more than eight years, according to Bloomberg Businessweek’s making-of report. That timeline covers more than asset creation. Rockstar was coordinating a global workforce, gathering real-world references and repeatedly deciding which parts of its original ambition could survive production at the required quality.

Miami-area research trips helped inform the fictional Vice City’s streets, architecture, vegetation and atmosphere. The goal was not simply to reproduce recognizable locations. Field observation gives artists and designers reference for how neighborhoods connect, how light and weather affect a place, and how everyday spaces can support the reactive systems expected of a modern open-world game.

Rockstar’s own positioning calls Vice City “The darkest side of the sunniest place in America.” That line is marketing language rather than a technical description, but it captures the contrast the setting is intended to provide: a bright, familiar tourist image alongside crime and instability.

Rockstar’s staff nearly doubled during development

Point of comparison Reported figure What it shows
Rockstar workforce in 2018 2,441 employees The approximate scale during the Red Dead Redemption 2 era.
Rockstar workforce by August 2026 4,711 employees across 12 offices A nearly doubled organization working across a global network.
Development period covered by the report More than eight years of full development A long production cycle shaped by iteration, coordination and delay pressure.

The increase does not mean every employee worked exclusively on GTA VI, and the reported figures do not identify staffing by department. They do show the organizational challenge Rockstar faced: more people can provide more specialized expertise, but they also create more dependencies between studios, disciplines and approval stages.

Why did GTA VI take so long to make?

Scope had to be controlled

Bloomberg reports that Rockstar expanded its ambition in some areas and narrowed the original plan in others. The reported target was a denser, more reactive open world, which requires large amounts of content to work together rather than exist as isolated set pieces. Every additional system can multiply testing, animation, writing, performance and quality-assurance work.

There is no verified public feature-by-feature list of what was cut or scaled back. It is therefore more accurate to describe the process as scope control than to claim that a specific rumored location, mission or mechanic was removed.

A global team is harder to synchronize

With 4,711 employees spread across 12 offices by August 2026, coordination itself became a production task. A change to world design can affect narrative, art, audio, animation, technology and testing. Delays can then propagate through those connected teams, particularly when the studio refuses to ship work that does not meet its quality target.

Research and iteration added time before release

Trips to the Miami area supplied reference material, while repeated revisions helped Rockstar decide how much detail the game could support reliably. This type of work is largely invisible to players: the final map may look seamless, but it reflects months or years of collecting references, building systems, testing them and revising them.

Original ambition versus the version Rockstar is preparing to ship

Aspect What is reported What is not established
World design Rockstar pursued a denser, more reactive open world. The exact number of systems, activities or locations is not publicly confirmed.
Scope decisions The studio expanded some ambitions and narrowed others during development. A complete list of changed or removed features has not been published.
Setting research Staff conducted Miami-area research for fictional Vice City. No official accounting assigns a particular feature to a specific research trip.

This distinction matters because online speculation often turns an internal production decision into a definitive claim about the finished game. The available reporting supports a story about iteration and trade-offs, not a catalog of confirmed cuts.

When does GTA VI release, and what consoles will run GTA VI?

Rockstar’s official product information gives GTA VI a November 19, 2026 release date. The launch platforms identified there are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

  • PlayStation 5: confirmed launch platform.
  • Xbox Series X|S: confirmed launch platform.
  • PC: no launch version is confirmed in the cited official material.

Rockstar’s site also carries trailers, artwork and pre-order information. Edition names, regional pricing and stock can vary, so those details should be checked in the official store listing for the buyer’s region.

How many copies will GTA VI sell?

Unnamed analysts cited in Bloomberg’s 2026 coverage expect 40 million copies in the first four months and more than $3 billion in revenue over that same period. Those are forecasts, not a Rockstar guarantee, a disclosed pre-order total or an audited result.

40 million copies in the first four months Analyst forecast Expectation from unnamed analysts cited in 2026 coverage.
More than $3 billion in the first four months Analyst forecast Revenue estimate, not a reported result.
Long-term monetization Take-Two’s stated strategy The company describes sequels, add-on content and in-game purchases as ways to extend revenue from a limited number of high-quality titles.

“Rockstar Games’ strategy is to develop a limited number of titles that are known for their quality and longevity in the market for which they can create sequels and incremental revenue opportunities through virtual currency, add-on content, and in-game purchases.”

That corporate strategy explains why a launch-period estimate is only part of the commercial picture. Take-Two also warns in its filing that timing and market acceptance can change outcomes. No cited primary source publishes a verified GTA VI development budget, so online budget figures should be treated as unconfirmed.

What is confirmed—and what remains open

  • The reported production has lasted more than eight years.
  • Rockstar had 4,711 employees across 12 offices in August 2026, compared with 2,441 in 2018.
  • Miami research informed the fictional Vice City.
  • The official release date is November 19, 2026.
  • PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the confirmed launch platforms.
  • The 40-million-copy and $3-billion-plus figures are analyst forecasts.
  • A final development budget, a PC launch version and country-specific prices are not established by the cited material.

The clearest picture is therefore not of a project that simply grew unchecked. GTA VI appears to be the result of Rockstar trying to balance a more detailed, reactive world against the practical limits of a huge, distributed production team—while protecting the quality and longevity that underpin Take-Two’s business model.
