Bethesda Game Studios confirmed on July 17, 2026 that it is working on remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The announcement gave no release dates, platforms, editions, or development-team details. Bethesda called them “remasters,” so that is the safest term; some coverage has called them remakes, but the terminology conflicts.
What Bethesda Confirmed
Bethesda said it had been working on remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The statement confirmed development, but did not establish when either game will release or where players will be able to play them.

Remaster or Remake?
Bethesda’s quoted wording is “remasters.” A GameSpot report published the same day described the projects as “full remakes,” so reporting has used the terms inconsistently. Until Bethesda clarifies the scope, its own wording is the most reliable description.
#1 Best Overall
- Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
- Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
- Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
- Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
- Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.
What Earlier Comments and Rumors Mean
Todd Howard’s comments were a general preference
In February 2026, Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard said he was “sort of anti-remake” and preferred preserving a game’s character through remastering. That was a general creative view, not a status update or indication that these remasters had been cancelled. Bethesda confirmed work on them months later.
Chris Avellone’s concerns were opinion, not confirmation
In an April 2026 interview excerpt, former Obsidian creative officer and New Vegas writer Chris Avellone questioned Bethesda’s engineering know-how and discussed uncertainty about whether New Vegas’s source code and build process had been handed over. Those were his views and speculation; they do not verify what code or other materials Bethesda currently has.

Iron Galaxy denied involvement suggested by a social post
A New Vegas loading-screen image shared by Iron Galaxy in February prompted speculation that the studio was teasing a remaster. Iron Galaxy later clarified that the image was used in a recurring internal company meeting and was unrelated to Fallout development. That clarification addresses the Iron Galaxy rumor; it does not identify the team working on Bethesda’s remasters.
