The December 2023 hack of Insomniac Games exposed a large cache of stolen files, including sensitive employee information and early development material. News reports said the files referenced Marvel’s Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, and other projects, but those references were leaked planning information—not official game announcements or guaranteed release dates. Insomniac said Wolverine would continue in production; Sony later announced a Fall 2026 release window for it.
What happened in the Insomniac hack?
On December 19, 2023, Bloomberg reported that the ransomware group Rhysida claimed responsibility for releasing more than 1.3 million files stolen from Sony-owned Insomniac Games. Bloomberg described the cache as containing game road maps, budgets, and detailed Wolverine information, as well as references to Spider-Man 3, Venom, X-Men games, and a Ratchet & Clank project. These project mentions were reported from leaked materials; they do not show that every project was approved, remained in development, or would ship on the dates shown in those files. Bloomberg’s report covered the leak.
Axios reported the release as 1.67 terabytes, or a little more than 1.3 million files, and said Rhysida published the material after Insomniac declined to pay a $2 million ransom. Axios described Wolverine development screenshots, internal Slack messages, employee passport information, royalty bonus plans, and other business documents in its account of the dump. Axios’s report provides that inventory. These are news organizations’ descriptions of the stolen material; the cache has not been independently authenticated here.
The breach was not just a source of game news. In its December 22 response, Insomniac confirmed that personal information belonging to employees, former employees, and independent contractors was among the stolen data. The studio said it was working to determine what information had been affected and described the incident as emotionally distressing. Insider Gaming reproduced the studio’s statement.

Did the leak confirm Spider-Man 3?
No. Bloomberg reported that leaked documents referenced Spider-Man 3 and other future Marvel titles, but a mention in stolen planning files is not an official confirmation of a project’s status, scope, or release date. The cited reporting does not establish that Spider-Man 3’s leak-era schedule became a public release commitment.
Road maps can change, and the files’ contents should be treated as reported leak material rather than a current slate of promised games. No Spider-Man 3 release date is established by the sources cited here.

What did Insomniac say about Wolverine?
In its December 22, 2023 statement, Insomniac said: “Marvel’s Wolverine continues as planned.” The studio described the game as being in early production at that time. That was a statement about production status in December 2023, not a confirmation of the dates appearing in leaked schedules.
A later public update provides the announced timing: Tom’s Guide reported that Sony showed a trailer for Wolverine during the September 2025 PlayStation State of Play and announced a Fall 2026 release window. That window is distinct from the 2023 leak’s reported schedule; the cited coverage does not establish a more precise release date. Tom’s Guide reported on the presentation and window.

How to read claims about the leaked projects
- Leaked planning material: Bloomberg reported references to Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, Venom, X-Men games, and a Ratchet & Clank project. Those are claims about what appeared in leaked documents, not proof that every title was greenlit or would meet a projected date.
- Insomniac’s statement: The studio confirmed exposure of personal information and said Wolverine remained in production, then in its early stage. This is the studio’s account of its response and the game’s status at that time.
- Later public update: Sony’s Fall 2026 Wolverine window was reported after the 2025 State of Play. It is the public timing information in the cited coverage, separate from the leak-era roadmap.
Keep those categories separate: the first describes reported stolen files, the second is the studio’s dated response, and the third is a later release-window report. None turns the leak’s Spider-Man 3 references into an official release announcement.
