Yes. The official Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server currently supports Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later, so Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 24.04 are valid supported targets. Download the current Ubuntu/Linux ZIP, run its native executable as a dedicated Linux user, open UDP 19132—not Java’s TCP 25565—and use systemd to keep it running.
Yes—Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Ubuntu 24.04 are supported
The official Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Dedicated Server currently requires Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later on Linux, so both Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 24.04 meet the supported baseline. Download the Linux/Ubuntu ZIP from the official Bedrock Dedicated Server download page; do not download the Java Edition server or try to launch the Bedrock server with Java.

This guide installs the official native Bedrock server as a dedicated Ubuntu service. It uses a separate minecraft Linux account, the default Bedrock UDP ports, a systemd unit for automatic startup, and a basic backup and upgrade workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What you need before installing
- A current 64-bit Ubuntu Server installation with security updates applied. This procedure assumes Intel or AMD hardware.
- At least 4 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i3-3210, AMD A8-7600, or equivalent processor, broadband internet, and roughly 180 MB to 1 GB of available disk space as the official baseline.
- Extra storage for world growth, logs, backups, and older server ZIP files. The published minimum is not a player-count or performance guarantee.
- A stable LAN address for a home server, or a stable public address for a VPS or cloud host.
- A Bedrock client whose version is compatible with the server version downloaded from the official page.
Player count, simulation distance, view distance, world complexity, and CPU performance all affect the result. The official minimum hardware may be adequate for a small test server, but it does not guarantee a particular number of players or tick rate. A dedicated mini PC host with at least 4 GB of RAM can be a convenient physical Ubuntu machine, but it should be treated as an example host category—not as a tested player-capacity recommendation.
Home hosting versus VPS hosting
For a home server, the Ubuntu machine needs a reachable LAN address, router port forwarding, and an internet connection that accepts inbound traffic. Carrier-grade NAT from an ISP can prevent inbound connections even when Ubuntu and the router are configured correctly. A wired connection is optional, but a Cat 6 Ethernet cable can make sense for a physical home host; it is unnecessary for Wi-Fi or a VPS.
If you do not have a machine, a public IP address, reliable power, or router access, the same Ubuntu procedure can be used on a cloud machine. A future hosting comparison could evaluate an Ubuntu VPS for Minecraft Bedrock, but provider support for UDP networking, available CPU and RAM, firewall controls, pricing, and current limits must be verified separately.

Open a terminal or connect over SSH, then update the system:
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo apt install -y unzip curl ca-certificates
unzip extracts the official ZIP. curl and ca-certificates are useful for downloading and checking HTTPS resources, although the official Minecraft instructions do not require this particular package-management command.
If this is a remote server, perform a full upgrade during a maintenance window. A kernel update may require a reboot before the new environment is actually running.
2. Create a dedicated Minecraft account and directory
Do not run a public game server as root. Create a system account and give it ownership of a dedicated installation directory:
sudo adduser --system --home /opt/minecraft-bedrock --group minecraft
sudo install -d -o minecraft -g minecraft /opt/minecraft-bedrock
cd /tmp
The separate account limits the damage caused by a server compromise, an unsafe add-on, or an accidental file operation. The server directory is also kept separate from /root and from a personal user’s home directory.
3. Download and extract the official Bedrock server
Open the official Bedrock server download page and choose the current Ubuntu/Linux ZIP. Save it in /tmp. The exact filename and Bedrock version change over time, so copy the filename shown on the download page instead of hard-coding an old version into an evergreen guide.
Extract the archive into the empty server directory:
cd /tmp
sudo unzip bedrock-server-*.zip -d /opt/minecraft-bedrock
sudo chown -R minecraft:minecraft /opt/minecraft-bedrock
If the wildcard does not match the downloaded file, identify the actual filename first:
Recommended Free Tools
ls -lh /tmp/*.zip
sudo unzip /tmp/<exact-downloaded-file>.zip -d /opt/minecraft-bedrock
Extracting into an empty directory avoids mixing files from different Bedrock releases. If you are upgrading an existing server, use a separate versioned directory and keep the old installation for rollback rather than extracting a new archive over a running server.

4. Accept the EULA and perform a first launch
Inspect the extracted files and open the EULA file as the service account:
cd /opt/minecraft-bedrock
sudo -u minecraft nano eula.txt
Change the relevant line to:
eula=true
If the archive does not contain eula.txt, launch the server once from this directory so it can generate the file, stop the process, and then set eula=true. You must accept the EULA before the server will run normally.
Start the native Bedrock executable manually for the first test:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorssudo -u minecraft env LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server
The LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. prefix is important because the package expects its runtime libraries relative to the server directory. The first successful launch creates or populates server files, including the initial world directory. Watch the console for errors and then type stop at the server console to shut it down cleanly.
If the executable reports Permission denied, check its permissions and ownership:
sudo chmod +x /opt/minecraft-bedrock/bedrock_server
sudo chown -R minecraft:minecraft /opt/minecraft-bedrock
namei -l /opt/minecraft-bedrock/bedrock_server
Do not assume that every startup failure is caused by a missing shared library. If the binary exits, use the exact error it prints to identify whether the problem is the EULA, file permissions, an incompatible binary, a missing library, or a configuration issue.
5. Configure server.properties
After the first launch has generated the configuration, edit it while the server is stopped:
sudo -u minecraft nano /opt/minecraft-bedrock/server.properties
The file is an INI-style list of key=value lines. This is a practical small-server starting point:
server-name=My Bedrock Server
gamemode=survival
difficulty=normal
allow-cheats=false
max-players=10
online-mode=true
allow-list=true
server-port=19132
server-portv6=19133
level-name=Bedrock level
view-distance=32
tick-distance=4
These settings are deliberately conservative in security but not necessarily in resource use. The official defaults include survival mode, easy difficulty, 10 maximum players, online mode enabled, the IPv4 port 19132, the IPv6 port 19133, view distance 32, and tick distance 4. Higher player limits, view distance, and tick distance can increase CPU, memory, and network use.
online-mode=true- Keep this enabled for an internet-facing server. It helps the server authenticate players through the normal account system. Disabling it is not a sensible default for a public server.
allow-list=true- Only players listed in
allowlist.jsoncan join. This is a good choice for a private family or friends server, but add at least one player before testing access. server-port=19132- The IPv4 Bedrock listening port. Bedrock uses UDP by default; Java Edition’s commonly used TCP port 25565 is unrelated.
server-portv6=19133- The IPv6 listening port. Open it only where IPv6 access is configured and desired.
level-name=Bedrock level- This identifies the world directory under
worlds/. If you import a world, the value must match that folder’s name. enable-lan-visibility- When enabled, the server advertises itself for LAN discovery. It can also cause binding on the default ports even when custom ports are configured, which matters when running multiple Bedrock servers on one host.
After changing the file, save it and start the server again. Do not copy Java Edition properties or Java startup flags into this configuration.

6. Add players to the allowlist and grant operator access
The easiest first-time workflow is to start the server in the foreground as the minecraft user, then enter commands at its console. With allow-list=true, add the permitted gamertag before asking that player to connect:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
allowlist add PlayerGamertag
allowlist reload
Use the player’s Xbox gamertag. Quote the name if it contains spaces:
allowlist add 'Player Gamertag'
allowlist reload
If you want to grant that player operator permissions, use the console command:
op PlayerGamertag
The server stores allowlist data in allowlist.json, optionally including XUIDs. If you edit that file directly, issue /allowlist reload in the running server so it rereads the file. For a systemd-managed server without an interactive console, the safer simple approach is to stop the service, make the file change, and start the service again. Do not expose an administrative console port directly to the internet merely for convenience; use SSH and normal Linux access controls.
7. Open the correct Ubuntu firewall ports
Check whether UFW is already active:
sudo ufw status verbose
If it is enabled, allow the UDP ports that match your server.properties:
sudo ufw allow 19132/udp
sudo ufw allow 19133/udp
sudo ufw reload
sudo ufw status verbose
Ubuntu documents UFW as its standard uncomplicated firewall tool. The protocol matters: opening TCP 19132 alone does not make the default Bedrock server reachable.
For a LAN-only server, restrict access to the actual local subnet instead of opening the port to every interface:
sudo ufw allow from 192.168.1.0/24 to any port 19132 proto udp
sudo ufw allow from 192.168.1.0/24 to any port 19133 proto udp
Replace 192.168.1.0/24 with your real LAN range. If the server is remote over SSH and UFW is inactive, allow SSH before enabling the firewall so you do not lock yourself out:
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw enable
For internet hosting, Ubuntu’s firewall is only one layer. You must also allow the configured UDP port in the home router, VPS security group, cloud firewall, or hosting-provider firewall. A home router normally forwards UDP 19132 to the Ubuntu machine’s fixed LAN address for IPv4. IPv6 usually requires an inbound rule on the host and router firewall rather than traditional NAT forwarding. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work at all.

Enable and start it:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now minecraft-bedrock
sudo systemctl status minecraft-bedrock
The status should report an active running service. Follow its logs with:
sudo journalctl -u minecraft-bedrock -f
This unit is an administration layer created for Ubuntu; it is not a Mojang-provided unit file. If you edit the unit later, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload before restarting the service. The Ubuntu systemd documentation explains the service-management model.
9. Test the server from the LAN and the internet
First verify the service and sockets locally:
systemctl is-active minecraft-bedrock
ss -lunp | grep -E '19132|19133'
sudo ufw status numbered
For a LAN test, use a different Bedrock device on the same network. Add the Ubuntu machine’s private LAN address and UDP port 19132 as a server, rather than relying only on automatic discovery. For internet testing, use the public address and verify the router or cloud firewall separately.
A running process and a listening socket prove only that Ubuntu started the server. They do not prove that an external player can reach it. Check the following in order:
- The client is Minecraft Bedrock Edition, not Java Edition.
- The client and server versions are compatible.
- The server is running and listening on the configured UDP port.
- UFW allows UDP, not just TCP.
- The router, VPS security group, or cloud firewall allows the same port.
- A home router forwards the port to the correct fixed LAN address.
- The public address is genuinely reachable and is not behind carrier-grade NAT.
- The player’s gamertag is present if
allow-list=true.
Bedrock clients on supported platforms can play against a Bedrock dedicated server across supported Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, mobile, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 environments, subject to the client’s current release and platform networking requirements.
10. Back up the world before maintenance
Stop the server before copying world data so that region files and player data are not being written during the backup:
sudo systemctl stop minecraft-bedrock
sudo tar -C /opt/minecraft-bedrock -czf /var/backups/minecraft-bedrock-$(date +%F-%H%M%S).tar.gz worlds server.properties allowlist.json permissions.json
sudo systemctl start minecraft-bedrock
If allowlist.json or permissions.json does not exist yet, omit the missing filename from the tar command. Confirm that the archive was created:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →ls -lh /var/backups/minecraft-bedrock-*.tar.gz
Keep multiple dated backups and store at least one copy away from the Ubuntu host. An external SSD for server backups is a practical local destination, but one drive connected to the same machine is not a complete backup strategy. Also maintain off-site Minecraft world backups and periodically test that an archive can actually be restored. Protect off-host copies because worlds can contain player names, builds, chat-related data, and administrative configuration.
A UPS for a home server can reduce abrupt shutdowns during short power interruptions, but it does not replace scheduled backups or protect against disk failure, theft, or file deletion.
11. Upgrade without losing the world
Bedrock server versions and ZIP filenames are volatile. Always check the official download page immediately before upgrading, and ensure the client release is compatible with the new server.
- Tell players to leave the world and stop the service.
- Create and verify a backup of
worlds,server.properties,allowlist.json, andpermissions.json. - Download the new official Ubuntu/Linux ZIP.
- Extract it into a new empty, versioned directory rather than overwriting the old installation.
- Copy the existing world and configuration files into the new directory.
- Set ownership to
minecraft:minecraftand test the new binary. - Keep the old server directory until the new version has been tested. Update the systemd path only if you change the installation directory.
The official documentation recommends separate subdirectories when retaining multiple server versions for testing. If the new release fails, stop it and restore the previous directory or service path instead of experimenting on the only copy of the world.

- Confirm that the server is running and that

- Confirm that
server-portand, where applicable,server-portv6match the firewall rules. - Confirm that UFW, the router, and any cloud firewall allow UDP rather than only TCP.
- Confirm the router forwards to the server’s current LAN address.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or an unreachable public address.
- If
allow-list=true, verify the exact gamertag inallowlist.json. - Leave
online-mode=trueenabled unless you have a very specific, understood authentication architecture.
LAN discovery does not work
Use the Ubuntu host’s LAN IP and port as a direct connection test. Then check enable-lan-visibility, UFW, Wi-Fi client isolation, and whether both devices are actually on the same subnet. Discovery can fail even when direct connection works. Conversely, enable-lan-visibility=true can create port conflicts if multiple Bedrock servers share one host, so give each instance a deliberate port arrangement.
An imported world does not appear
Start and stop the server once, then copy the world directory into worlds/:
sudo systemctl stop minecraft-bedrock
sudo cp -a /path/to/world /opt/minecraft-bedrock/worlds/
sudo chown -R minecraft:minecraft /opt/minecraft-bedrock/worlds
sudo -u minecraft nano /opt/minecraft-bedrock/server.properties
sudo systemctl start minecraft-bedrock
Set level-name to the exact folder name inside worlds/. Avoid special characters in the folder name. If the server creates a new world instead, check spelling, capitalization, ownership, and whether the copied directory contains the Bedrock world files at its top level rather than inside an extra nested directory.
Optional alternatives and common mistakes
Docker is a legitimate alternative for operators who already manage containers, but it is not the official Mojang installation package. The widely used itzg/docker-minecraft-bedrock-server project documents UDP port mappings, persistent /data storage, EULA acceptance, and automatic version lookup. Treat it as third-party software: read its current documentation, understand its image and volume behavior, and do not mix its paths with this native systemd installation without a backup.
- Do not call Debian, Fedora, Arch, or Alpine officially supported Linux targets for the current package.
- Do not promise a player count based only on 4 GB of RAM or the published minimum CPU.
- Do not tell Java Edition players that they can join this Bedrock server directly.
- Do not launch the native Bedrock binary with Java commands or Java memory flags.
- Do not disable
online-modeas a casual fix for connection problems. - Do not open only TCP 19132; the default Bedrock port is UDP 19132.
- Do not expose a remote administrative console to the public internet.
- Do not overwrite the only copy of a working server during an upgrade.

Does the official Minecraft Bedrock server support Ubuntu 24.04?
Yes. The current official Bedrock Dedicated Server download page lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for Linux, which includes Ubuntu 24.04. Ubuntu is the officially supported Linux distribution; other distributions should not be described as equivalent supported targets.
Do I need Java to run a Minecraft Bedrock server on Ubuntu?
No. The official Bedrock server is a native executable launched with LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server. It is not the Java server JAR, and the default Bedrock port is UDP 19132 rather than Java Edition’s commonly used TCP port 25565.
Is 4 GB of RAM enough for a Bedrock server?
The published 4 GB RAM and minimum CPU specifications are baseline requirements, not a guarantee of a player count or tick performance. Player count, view distance, tick distance, world complexity, and CPU performance affect the result.
Can I install the official Bedrock server on Debian or Fedora?
The server may work elsewhere, but Ubuntu is the only officially supported Linux distribution in the current guidance. Debian, Fedora, Arch, Alpine, and similar distributions should be treated as unsupported targets rather than interchangeable choices.

The Bottom Line
On Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or 24.04, install the official Bedrock Linux ZIP in a dedicated directory, run it as the minecraft user, keep online-mode=true, allow UDP 19132 through every relevant firewall, and put the working installation under systemd. Test from another device, then back up worlds/ before every upgrade or maintenance operation.
