To escape HORROR – Into The Backrooms – Found Footage, enter by suffocating under sand or gravel, search Level 0 for the chained stairwell, choose a route from Level 1, and finish at the fenced staircase in Level 10. The pack is built for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 on Fabric and turns the Backrooms into a survival-horror navigation puzzle with entities, false signals, scarce supplies and changing environmental hazards.

What this modpack is
HORROR – Into The Backrooms – Found Footage (dweller) is a Minecraft Java Edition modpack by kamussy, described on its CurseForge project page as a classic VHS-style Backrooms experience in Minecraft. The current listing shows release 2.0.7, updated October 13, 2026. Modrinth lists client-and-server support and multiplayer tags, so you can play alone or host a cooperative session. The pack credits SpacePotato for the underlying Backrooms mod.

Its world is an apparently endless cycle of liminal rooms, parking areas, pipes, stations, pools and fields. Buzzing lights, whispers, corridor glitches, fake messages and hostile entities are intended to make ordinary navigation unreliable. The objective is not to gather a conventional set of materials or defeat a final boss; it is to recognize the correct architectural clues, manage health and sprint energy, and reach the exit before the environment or an entity overwhelms you.
Level names and behavior can change when the pack updates. The route below follows the release information and walkthrough guidance available for version 2.0.7 in October 2026.

Check your installation before starting
Required game and loader
- Use Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
- Launch the Fabric profile required by the pack rather than a vanilla, Forge or different-version profile.
- Install the same pack version on the server and every client in multiplayer.
- Keep a copy of the pack version number when troubleshooting; release numbers, commands and level behavior are update-sensitive.
Official hardware guidance
The project lists the following minimum recommended specification. It also warns that the pack is very resource-intensive, so meeting these figures does not guarantee smooth play.

Those figures are the pack’s published guidance from CurseForge in 2026, not a guarantee or a laboratory benchmark. If the game opens but stutters, reduce demanding graphics options, close other applications and test a lower render distance before assuming the route itself is broken. If it crashes during launch, confirm the Java 1.20.1 and Fabric selections first, then verify that the client and server use identical pack files.

Entry is deliberately strange: the official description instructs you to suffocate yourself with sand or gravel. Prepare before triggering it because your normal equipment is not a safety net inside.
- Fill your hunger bar in the overworld. The practical walkthrough recommends entering at full hunger so you have the largest reserve while searching for the first exit.
- Remove anything you cannot afford to lose or be unable to use. Armor does not carry into the Backrooms, and the transition can clear your overworld inventory.
- Place sand or gravel directly overhead so the falling blocks begin the suffocation sequence.
- Allow the entry transition to complete instead of interrupting it with unrelated movement.
- Once you arrive, activate the flashlight. The default key is F, and the walkthrough describes its battery as unlimited.
The flashlight is not cosmetic equipment. It is your primary way to read dark geometry and the direct counter to Smilers later in the run. If your inventory is cleared, the documented command /gimmemyinventoryback (username) can restore an overworld inventory; use the exact username syntax shown in the command list.
Complete route map
There are five principal levels followed by the surface escape. Level 1 is the decision point: its lower staircase commits you to the longer Pipe Dreams and Poolrooms sequence, while its upper staircase sends you through Forgotten Station. Both paths eventually reach Level 10.

Level 0: find the Lobby stairwell
The first level is a procedurally generated maze of yellowed, repetitive halls. Do not treat any staircase as progress; the route clue is a specific room. Search for a room illuminated by white lights that contains a chained fence and a staircase descending from it. That downward staircase is the transition to Level 1.
Because the layout is generated, no coordinate or fixed turning sequence is reliable. Keep the flashlight on while checking intersections, and use distinctive wall shapes, corners and light fixtures as temporary orientation markers. The pack’s audio and chat effects can imitate danger or another player’s activity, so a message or sound alone is not proof that you have found the correct direction.
Level 1: choose your route
The Habitable Zone resembles a large parking garage and provides the most important choice in the run. Before leaving, inspect crates: the independent walkthrough reports that they can contain food, which is valuable after the hunger-consuming entry and before the longer route.
Downstairs route: longer, with Pipe Dreams and Poolrooms
Take the downstairs staircase to Level 2. This route has more transitions and demands sprint management, but it gives clear visual progression through the pipe and pool environments.
Upstairs route: shorter, through Forgotten Station
Take the upstairs staircase to Level 324. It has fewer level transitions, but the station contains a decisive trap: the gas-station back door leads to a dark area with no exit according to the official description. Stay outside and use the road-side grass route instead.

Downstairs route in detail
Level 2 — Pipe Dreams
Level 2 is a long pipe hallway. Continue forward rather than treating every side opening as a destination. Screen glitches are the progression signal described by both the project information and the walkthrough. The sprint or energy bar matters here: hold sprint continuously and you can exhaust the resource before the next transition. Sprint in bursts, walk while reorienting, and reserve energy for moments when the corridor opens or danger appears.
Level 37 — The Poolrooms
In the Poolrooms, locate the huge room and follow the staircase that winds along the wall. At the top, pass through the hole to reach Level 10. The water has a time-dependent hazard. The project states that pool water becomes toxic during the sunset or night phase and is safe again in the morning. The walkthrough describes taking damage in the water but surviving with adequate health, so crossing is a health decision rather than an automatic instant death. If the lighting indicates the dangerous phase, avoid unnecessary swimming and wait for a safer period when the level permits it.
Upstairs route in detail
Level 324 — Forgotten Station
After taking the upper staircase from Level 1, look for the gas-station area and the road outside it. Follow the grass along either side of the road. That route eventually drops you into Level 10.
Do not enter the gas station’s back door. The official level description specifically marks the dark area beyond it as having no exit. If you have already entered and the environment appears to dead-end, retrace your path rather than spending health or supplies searching for a hidden door that the route does not use.

Both routes converge in the Infinite Grass Field. The field can feel empty enough to encourage random wandering, but the escape clue is a large fenced structure. Search methodically across the grass until you locate it, enter the enclosure and climb its staircase. That staircase returns you to the surface and completes the escape route.

The structure, not a random horizon or isolated patch of grass, is the objective. If you are playing with a group, agree on a search pattern and keep a meeting point so that a fake chat message or distant sound does not split everyone in a different direction.
Entities and environmental threats
Skinwalker — Level 0, multiplayer only
The Skinwalker can take over a player’s body and use that player’s microphone to deceive the group. The official description says it emerges and attacks after time passes or after it is attacked. This threat is exclusive to multiplayer, so a solo run avoids the possession mechanic entirely.
In co-op, confirm unusual voice instructions through a second channel or a pre-agreed callout. If the entity has taken a player, the documented release command is /release (username). The same project also documents /skinwalker (username) for intentionally turning a friend into a Skinwalker, which is useful for testing or a controlled horror session.

Smilers appear during periodic light outages and damage players while visible. Shine the flashlight at a Smiler from close range; the project and walkthrough both describe this as making it disappear. Keep the light ready before entering dark sections, and do not waste time trying to fight one with ordinary weapons when the documented counter is illumination.
Unreliable signals and timed events
Flickering or extinguished lights, horror effects, fake chat, false join or leave notices, fake death messages, distant sounds and glitching corridors are part of the pack’s event design. Treat audio and chat as possible game events rather than reliable evidence that a teammate died, joined, found an exit or is calling you. The toxic Poolrooms phase is another environmental event whose danger changes with the level’s day-night cycle.

These commands are documented by the project listings. Their availability can depend on the permissions and server setup of your session, so a command that is valid in a local test world may be unavailable to an ordinary multiplayer player.
Solo or multiplayer?
Solo
Solo play removes the multiplayer-only Skinwalker and microphone deception. It also means every sound, chat message and apparent teammate cue can be dismissed as an event, but you have no partner to carry supplies, watch a staircase or confirm a route. The route itself is unchanged.
Co-op
Multiplayer adds communication risk as well as help. Agree on a meeting point, a phrase for confirming a real player and a rule that no one follows a voice through an unexplored door without visual confirmation. The Skinwalker commands allow a host to create or end the possession scenario, while the flashlight and route clues remain individual survival tools.
Troubleshooting route and setup problems
The pack will not launch
- Verify that the instance is Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
- Verify that the selected loader is Fabric and that the pack’s client files are installed in that profile.
- Check that a multiplayer server is running the same release as the clients.
- Set memory allocation near the published 4 GB figure only if your computer has enough total RAM to leave the operating system responsive.
The game launches but runs poorly
The official listing labels the pack resource-intensive and warns that even systems meeting its recommended minimum may fail to run it well. Close background applications, lower graphics-heavy settings and render distance, and test again. Performance depends on CPU and GPU age, available system memory, drivers and chosen settings; the published specification is not a promise of a fixed frame rate.
You cannot find the next transition
- In Level 0, search for the white-lit room with the chained fence; ordinary stairs are not the stated clue.
- In Level 1, decide whether you are intentionally taking the lower or upper staircase. The lower path goes to Pipe Dreams; the upper path goes to Forgotten Station.
- In Pipe Dreams, continue through the long pipe hallway and watch for screen glitches.
- In Forgotten Station, stay on the grass beside the road and avoid the gas-station back door.
- In the Poolrooms, find the huge room, climb the staircase along the wall and pass through the hole.
- In the Infinite Grass Field, search for the large fenced structure and its staircase.
You are losing health in the Poolrooms
Check whether the level is in its sunset or night phase. The project identifies that period as toxic for the water. Leave the water, preserve health for the staircase and cross when the level returns to morning if the route allows it.
Your armor or items disappeared
Armor is not carried into the Backrooms by design. The entry can also clear an overworld inventory; the documented restoration command is /gimmemyinventoryback (username). Prepare with full hunger and understand that the flashlight, rather than armor, is the essential piece of equipment inside.

- Confirm Java 1.20.1 and Fabric before creating the world.
- Allocate the published 4 GB of RAM when your computer can support it.
- Enter with a full hunger bar.
- Expect armor to be removed and inventory restoration to require the documented command.
- Bind or verify the flashlight on F before the first outage.
- In multiplayer, establish a voice-authentication phrase and meeting point.
- At Level 1, decide which staircase matches your preferred risk: the longer lower route or the shorter upper route with the gas-station trap.
- Keep sprint energy for Pipe Dreams and health for a toxic Poolrooms crossing.
Final verdict
This modpack’s escape puzzle is learnable once its landmarks are understood: the chained stairwell in Level 0, the two staircases in Level 1, the pipe glitches or roadside grass that mark each branch, and the fenced staircase in Level 10. The horror comes from making those landmarks hard to trust through darkness, false messages, voice mimicry and timed hazards. Install the correct 1.20.1 Fabric version, prepare for the sand-or-gravel entry, keep the flashlight available, and use the route clues rather than wandering by sound.
