What is an iPhone emulator?
An emulator imitates the hardware and software behavior of an older console so an iPhone or iPad can run software designed for that system. The game file may be called a ROM for cartridge-based systems, an ISO or CSO for disc-based systems, or another image format. Some emulators also use a BIOS file that reproduces part of a console’s system software.

Emulators are separate from the games they run. Installing Delta, RetroArch, Provenance, or PPSSPP does not normally give you a commercial game library.
Are iPhone emulators allowed on the App Store?
Apple’s App Review Guidelines, section 4.7, allow retro game console and PC emulator apps to offer software downloads, provided the apps comply with Apple’s rules and applicable law.
That policy does not make every ROM, ISO, BIOS file, or download source legal. Copyright and circumvention rules differ by country, and personal copying is not automatically lawful everywhere. Use only game files you are authorized to use—such as legally obtained homebrew, public-domain software, or backups where permitted by the law that applies to you. This article does not link to unauthorized ROM repositories.

Best for Game Boy: Delta
Delta is the simplest recommendation for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. Its U.S. App Store listing also advertises NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and Nintendo DS support.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
It offers save states, cheats, controller support, customizable controller skins, and synchronization features. Its Nintendo-focused design makes it easier to understand than a core-based frontend such as RetroArch.
Delta is not a PS1 or PSP solution. Its official documentation lists NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, while the App Store listing additionally identifies Nintendo DS support. See the official supported-system summary and current App Store listing.
Best for Nintendo 64: Delta
Delta is the most approachable N64 choice if you mainly want Nintendo games and do not need a large multi-console library. Its listing references N64 core and rendering improvements, including fixes for black or missing textures.

N64 emulation is more variable than Game Boy emulation. Compatibility can depend on the iPhone or iPad model, iOS version, game revision, graphics settings, and emulator update. A physical controller is especially useful because N64 games rely on several buttons and an analog stick.
RetroArch and Provenance are alternatives if you want to experiment with different systems or configurations, but their greater breadth also brings more setup decisions.
Best for PlayStation 1: Provenance or RetroArch
For PS1, choose Provenance if you want a traditional multi-console library, or RetroArch if you prefer flexibility and do not mind managing cores.
Neither should be described as a dedicated PS1-only app. PlayStation support is one part of a much larger system list. PS1 games commonly use disc-image formats, and some configurations may require a BIOS. File-format and BIOS requirements depend on the app and its current implementation.
PS1 and PSP are separate platforms. A PS1 game file will not work as a PSP game, and choosing an emulator that lists one system does not imply support for the other.
Best for PSP: PPSSPP
PPSSPP is the clear dedicated choice for PlayStation Portable games on iPhone and iPad. Its listing supports PSP ISO and CSO files, includes PSP-specific settings, and advertises a built-in homebrew store. It explicitly says that games are not included.
The PPSSPP project’s iOS documentation explains how Apple’s policy change enabled its official App Store release. PPSSPP says it can run nearly all PSP games with good performance on iOS; that is the developer’s broad claim, not a guarantee for every device, game, or graphics setting.

- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).

- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
PSP games were designed around a physical analog stick, shoulder buttons, and precise controls. PPSSPP’s listing specifically references compatibility with Backbone hardware, although touch controls remain available.
Best multi-system app: RetroArch versus Provenance
RetroArch is a frontend that uses separate emulator components called cores. Its App Store listing advertises support for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64, PlayStation, PSP, Nintendo DS, Sega systems, Atari, arcade platforms, and classic computers. It also lists save states, netplay, RetroAchievements, controller remapping, cheats, shaders, fast-forward, and rewind.

A platform appearing in the listing means a relevant core is available; it does not mean every game runs perfectly or that every desktop feature is exposed in the iOS version.
Provenance presents a more console-oriented library. Its listing advertises Game Boy systems, N64, PlayStation, PSP, NES, SNES, Nintendo DS and 3DS, Sega Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, Atari, Neo Geo, TurboGrafx, 3DO, and other platforms.
Provenance may be the better fit for someone who wants one library covering many classic systems. Its breadth can also make it less immediately approachable than Delta. The listing references Provenance Plus and in-app purchases, so check the current purchase screen before assuming a feature is included for free.
Other systems you may find
Depending on the app and its current cores, readers may find support for Sega Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, Saturn, Dreamcast and Sega CD; Atari systems; TurboGrafx-16; Neo Geo; arcade platforms; DOS; classic computers; 3DO; and additional consoles.

How to install an App Store emulator
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for the exact app name: Delta – Game Emulator, RetroArch, Provenance App, or PPSSPP – PSP emulator.
- Confirm the developer identity, supported devices, and current listing.
- Install the app and open it.
- Use the app’s Add, Import, or file-browser control to select an authorized game file from the iOS Files app or another supported provider.
- Wait for the title to appear in the library, then tap it to launch.
Button labels can change between releases, so follow the current in-app or project documentation if the wording differs. Delta’s official getting-started guidance is available through its user guide.
How to add games safely
Import the game file through the app’s file picker or the iOS Files app. Cartridge-based games are usually represented by ROM files. Disc-based systems may use ISO or other disc-image formats. PPSSPP explicitly supports ISO and CSO in its App Store description.
If a game is compressed, split across multiple discs, or accompanied by a required BIOS, follow the emulator’s format instructions. Do not download “ROM packs,” commercial game libraries, BIOS files, certificates, or jailbreak tools from random websites. A file working technically does not establish that you were authorized to obtain it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo you need a controller?
Touch controls are generally sufficient for short Game Boy sessions, menus, turn-based games, and simple platformers. A physical controller is a worthwhile upgrade for:
- N64 games with complex button layouts.
- PS1 games that use analog controls.
- PSP games designed around a physical thumbstick.
- Action games where tactile feedback matters.
Delta’s listing identifies support for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, MFi, Bluetooth, and wired controllers. PPSSPP specifically highlights Backbone compatibility. A controller adds cost and bulk, so it is less useful if you mainly play occasional Game Boy games.
Saves, synchronization, and storage
Delta advertises synchronization for games, saves, save states, cheats, controller skins, and mappings between devices. Provenance’s listing references iCloud-related improvements and Provenance Plus features. Check the current release notes for the precise scope of synchronization.
Keep an independent backup of important save files. Cloud synchronization is not the same as a durable backup, and save-state compatibility can change after an emulator or core update.

(*Razer Nexus does not require a fee/subscription, however some apps within Razer Nexus do)
Storage requirements vary substantially. Game Boy files are generally small, while PS1 disc images and PSP ISO or CSO files can be much larger. App storage and game-library storage are separate concerns, and artwork, shaders, save states, and multiple disc images add to the total.
Common problems and fixes
The game does not appear after import
Confirm that the import completed, that the file is in a supported format, and that it is not still inside an unsupported archive. Try importing again from the Files app and restart the emulator if its library does not refresh.
The game launches to a black screen or has graphical glitches
Check the file, required BIOS, emulator version, graphics backend, and per-game settings. N64 titles are particularly likely to vary by game. Updating can help, but an update can also change core behavior or save-state compatibility.
The controller is not recognized
Pair the controller in iOS Settings, reconnect it before launching the game, and inspect the emulator’s controller-mapping screen. Wired, Bluetooth, MFi, and console-specific controller support can differ by app.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A save state will not load
Use the same game revision, emulator, and core when possible. Keep normal in-game saves as well as save states, and back up important files before changing cores or updating the app.
The app is unavailable in my country
App Store availability is regional. Delta’s official guide says it is available through the App Store outside the European Union and through AltStore PAL in EU countries. U.S. availability does not guarantee availability elsewhere. Alternative distribution also has different installation and payment considerations.
Prices and App Store status
Prices observed in the U.S. listings on August 18, 2026 were:
- Delta: free download with optional support-oriented purchases displayed as Early Adopter, Community Member, and Friend Zone tiers.
- RetroArch: free.
- Provenance: free download with in-app purchases and references to Provenance Plus.
- PPSSPP: free download with in-app purchases.
These labels and prices are volatile. Verify the live App Store page before publishing or purchasing. Always check the exact developer name, since emulator availability can change because of policy decisions, copyright complaints, regional restrictions, developer withdrawal, or abandonment.
Which iPhone emulator should you choose?
- Choose Delta if you mainly want Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, N64, or DS and prefer the simplest Nintendo-focused experience.
- Choose PPSSPP if PSP is your main system.
- Choose Provenance if you want a broad console library with a traditional multi-system feel.
- Choose RetroArch if you want maximum system coverage, customization, and core-level flexibility and are willing to learn more settings.
There is no universal best emulator. The right choice follows the console you want to play, the amount of setup you tolerate, and whether you need a controller or multi-device synchronization.
