Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMicrosoft’s Xbox 360 Store and web Marketplace permanently stopped accepting new purchases on July 29, 2024. But that was not a shutdown of the entire Xbox 360 ecosystem. Previously purchased games and DLC remain playable and available for redownload according to Microsoft, physical discs still work, and multiplayer can continue when a game’s publisher still operates its servers.
The biggest loss affects people who never bought a title before the closure: many non-backward-compatible, digital-only Xbox 360 games and some add-ons no longer have a new-purchase route.

What actually closed?
The closure covered two storefronts:
- The Xbox 360 Store: the storefront accessed directly from the console.
- The Xbox 360 Marketplace: the older web marketplace at
marketplace.xbox.com.
From July 29, 2024, those services stopped accepting purchases of Xbox 360 games, downloadable content and other entertainment. Microsoft describes the marketplace as retired on its current Xbox 360 information page.
This was narrower than shutting down Xbox Live or the wider Xbox network. Account services, friends, cloud saves and some online multiplayer features did not disappear automatically.

Microsoft’s original announcement explains the closure and its continuing support for owned content: Xbox 360 Store closure announcement.
What still works for Xbox 360 owners?
| Feature | Current status |
|---|---|
| Previously purchased digital games | Remain playable, subject to account and service requirements. |
| Previously purchased DLC | Microsoft says owned content remains available for redownload, although individual licensing and service issues can complicate access. |
| Redownloads | Available through the account that made the purchase. |
| Physical Xbox 360 discs | Still usable on an Xbox 360. |
| Cloud saves | Microsoft says supported cloud saves and progress continue to work. |
| Multiplayer | Depends on the individual game’s publisher and its servers. |
| New purchases on the old storefronts | No longer available. |
Can you still play games you bought?
Yes. A purchased digital game remains associated with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns its license. Sign in with that account on the Xbox 360 to play or redownload owned content.
Microsoft’s position is that previously purchased games and add-ons remain playable and downloadable. That is not an unlimited guarantee for every feature: a title may depend on publisher servers, online authentication, a particular region, or downloadable components that no longer function.
To look for an owned item, sign in to the purchasing account and open the Xbox 360’s account or system settings. Look for Download History or the equivalent purchase-history screen, select the game or add-on, and choose the download option. Menu wording can vary by dashboard version and region.

If a rare digital-only game is already on your console, avoid deleting it before confirming that the correct account can retrieve it again. Redownload support exists according to Microsoft, but account, licensing and service problems can still make recovery more difficult.
What about DLC?
DLC is more complicated than the base game. Previously purchased paid or free add-ons are covered by Microsoft’s redownload policy, but new purchases through the Xbox 360 storefront are gone.
Some DLC for backward-compatible games may still be sold through the modern Xbox Store. Other add-ons are tied to games that are no longer sold, were delisted earlier, or require compatibility packs or other downloads. A game remaining playable does not prove that every expansion, theme, avatar item, title update or compatibility file is still obtainable.
Can you buy Xbox 360 games today?
Only selectively. Microsoft’s modern Xbox Store continues to sell certain backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games and DLC on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox.com. The catalog is not the complete Xbox 360 library.

Do not assume that a modern-store purchase is a native Xbox 360 license or that it will run on an Xbox 360. The official backward-compatibility catalog lists supported titles and explains that compatibility is selective.
What happened to physical Xbox 360 discs?
The storefront closure did not invalidate physical games. An Xbox 360 disc can still be played on an Xbox 360.
On Xbox One or Xbox Series X, a disc works only when its game is in Microsoft’s backward-compatible catalog. For supported titles, inserting the disc prompts the console to download the playable version, but the disc remains required to launch the game.
Xbox Series S is different: it has no disc drive and cannot play physical Xbox 360 games. It is suitable only for supported digital titles and other digital content.
Did Xbox 360 multiplayer shut down?
No—not as a blanket result of the store closure. Multiplayer availability is determined largely by the individual game’s online infrastructure. It can depend on whether the publisher still runs its servers, whether the game’s authentication and matchmaking systems function, and whether the player meets any current subscription or account requirements.
Microsoft said players could continue connecting with friends and using multiplayer where publishers continued supporting the relevant servers. The Xbox 360 store closure should therefore not be described as proof that every Xbox 360 online game is still active—or that all of them are gone.
What happened to cloud saves?
Microsoft said cloud saves and progress would continue to be supported, including transferring saves when a supported game is played on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
That does not mean every game has identical cross-generation behavior. A local save, an Xbox cloud save and progression stored by a publisher are different things, and game-specific online services may have separate failure points.

What happened to Movies & TV?
The closure also affected video content. The Microsoft Movies & TV app stopped functioning on Xbox 360 after July 29, 2024. Microsoft said purchased films and television content would remain accessible through supported Windows devices, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
That is a separate consequence from game ownership: Xbox 360 games and DLC were not simply erased, while the old console’s Movies & TV app no longer operated.
Which games became unavailable to new buyers?
The most vulnerable games are those that are:
- not backward compatible;
- digital-only;
- already delisted;
- missing a physical edition or modern port; or
- dependent on DLC or downloads that are no longer obtainable.
Many Xbox Live Arcade games fall into one or more of these categories. There is no single reliable number for how many disappeared without defining the catalogs, regions and date being compared, so broad claims about “thousands” of lost games should be treated cautiously.
Backward compatibility preserves a significant selection, but it does not preserve the entire Xbox 360 catalog. For some titles, a working used Xbox 360 and a physical copy are now the only practical options.
Choosing hardware in 2026
| Your priority | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Xbox 360 discs and newer games | Xbox Series X | Only supported disc-based titles work. |
| Digital backward-compatible games | Xbox Series X or Series S | The modern catalog is selective. |
| Lowest-cost all-digital modern route | Xbox Series S | It cannot play discs. |
| Non-backward-compatible legacy games | Original Xbox 360 | Used hardware and online services can fail with age. |
| Original Xbox 360 experience | Xbox 360 | New marketplace purchases are unavailable. |
The Xbox Series X is the stronger modern replacement for people with physical collections because it includes a disc drive. The Xbox Series S is an all-digital option, but it cannot replace a disc-based Xbox 360 library.
Practical checklist for Xbox 360 owners
- Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns your digital purchases.
- Check Download History and redownload important games and DLC while your account can still retrieve them.
- Keep physical discs, console storage and licenses together.
- Back up or preserve important local saves where practical, while continuing to use cloud saves for supported games.
- Check the official backward-compatibility catalog before replacing an Xbox 360 with a newer console.
- For multiplayer games, check the publisher’s current server status rather than assuming Xbox 360 network support means the game is active.
- For a used console, inspect the disc drive, hard drive, power supply and controller, and remember that required DLC or online servers may not be recoverable.
The bottom line
The Xbox 360 store is gone for good, but the Xbox 360 ecosystem did not vanish with it. Existing digital purchases remain playable and redownloadable according to Microsoft, physical discs still work, cloud saves continue for supported services, and some multiplayer remains available.
The real preservation gap is the part of the catalog that was never purchased, is not backward compatible, has no physical release and has no modern storefront replacement. For those games, keeping a working Xbox 360—or finding a physical copy—may be the only durable option.
