Is 2GB RAM Enough for a Valheim Server?

Two gigabytes can work for a tiny vanilla Valheim server, but it leaves little room for growth, mods, backups, or other services. Here’s how to choose and test your allocation.

Yes, 2GB of RAM can run a small, vanilla Valheim dedicated server, but it is a tight minimum rather than a reliable general-purpose target. It is most plausible for one to four players on a lightweight Linux setup with no large mods or competing services. For most friend groups, choose 4GB; consider 6–8GB for larger groups, developed worlds, substantial modding, or a machine doing other work.

These are practical recommendations, not official Iron Gate requirements: its dedicated-server guide does not specify a RAM minimum. This guidance reflects the pre-1.0 build as of August 18, 2026; Iron Gate announced Valheim 1.0 for September 9, 2026, so memory behavior may change after that release. Iron Gate support and version updates

How much Valheim can 2GB handle?

Two gigabytes may be enough for a quiet, small server, but player count alone cannot predict whether it will stay within the limit. Players exploring separate regions can load more world areas than a group staying together; a heavily built-up base, mods, operating-system overhead, and backup jobs also affect resource use.

Server workload 2GB assessment
One or two players, vanilla, small or fresh world Likely workable on a lightweight host, though it is still worth monitoring.
Three or four players, vanilla Often workable on Linux, but leave time to check peak memory use.
Five to ten players, vanilla Borderline and dependent on world activity and host configuration; 4GB is a better target.
Five to ten players in a developed world Not a good 2GB target.
Large builds, players exploring far apart, or frequent busy sessions Risky on 2GB; choose more headroom.
Modded server Usually a poor fit for 2GB. Start at 4GB; substantial mod collections may call for 6–8GB.
Server sharing its machine with other services 2GB leaves little margin for those services and the operating system.
Windows machine with only 2GB total physical memory Usually impractical for an always-on server.

Valheim supports 1–10 players on dedicated servers, but that published player range is not a RAM recommendation. Steam’s Valheim listing

What does “2GB RAM” mean?

Check what the number applies to before comparing plans. A hosted plan or container may impose a 2GB limit on the server process or its container; a VPS plan may allocate 2GB to the whole virtual machine; a self-hosted computer’s 2GB of physical memory must also cover its operating system and other running software. Those are not equivalent situations.

A minimal Linux installation generally leaves more of a small allocation available than a graphical desktop, but a 2GB VPS is still a 2GB system if the operating system shares that allocation. Docker, a control panel, monitoring, databases, Steam-related processes, and backup tools all need room too.

Why might it work at first and struggle later?

A fresh world and a quiet session may stay within memory limits, while a long-running world can become more demanding as players build, explore, and occupy different regions. A server that starts successfully has not necessarily demonstrated that it can handle the busiest session or run reliably over time. Community-maintained estimates put a fresh dedicated world at roughly 1.8–2.4GB, with more memory used as areas are loaded; treat that as an approximate field estimate, not an official specification or guarantee. Iron Gate says Valheim versions 0.217.40 and later load and unload assets dynamically, reducing memory pressure compared with keeping everything resident. That change matters when weighing older advice, but it does not guarantee that 2GB will be enough for a particular host or workload. Iron Gate support and version updates

  • Several players exploring separate areas can increase the amount of active world data.
  • Large bases, object activity, and server-side mods can add load.
  • World saves, updates, and external backup jobs may create additional resource or disk activity.
  • Other applications or a hosting panel can consume memory that seemed available while the server was idle.

How much RAM should you choose?

The figures below are practical guidance, not published Iron Gate minimums. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server instructions document setup, ports, packages, and configuration, but do not specify a RAM requirement. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide

Allocation Practical fit
2GB A small vanilla trial or a tiny group, especially on lightweight Linux with no substantial competing workload. Expect to monitor it and accept less margin for spikes.
4GB A sensible general target for most small friend groups, long-running worlds, several large builds, Windows hosting, or a few lightweight mods.
6–8GB More appropriate for seven to ten players, substantial mod collections, a highly developed world, multiple services, or a preference for extra operating headroom.

For mods, count and type matter more than the mod count alone. A few heavy additions can demand more than many cosmetic or quality-of-life changes; loaders, dependencies, custom creatures, world-generation changes, and automation all complicate estimates. Start at 4GB for modded play and consider 6–8GB for substantial collections. Iron Gate’s asset-loading changes from version 0.217.40 onward also mean older mod-era memory estimates may not transfer directly. Iron Gate support and version updates

Does Valheim’s 8GB Steam requirement apply to the server?

No—not directly. Steam lists 8GB minimum RAM for the playable Valheim client on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with 16GB recommended. That is for running the game client, which also handles graphics, rendering, audio, and the player interface; it is not an official RAM minimum for the headless dedicated-server process. Iron Gate does not publish a dedicated-server RAM minimum in its guide, so neither Steam’s client figure nor a 2GB estimate should be presented as the server’s official requirement. Steam’s Valheim listing · Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide

What else can cause lag or connection trouble?

Memory is only one possible bottleneck. A server can have free RAM and still perform poorly because of CPU limits, disk delays, unstable upload bandwidth, packet loss, or high latency between players and the host. Server-side mods and busy world activity can also affect simulation. Client frame-rate problems can feel like server lag without being caused by the server at all.

  • CPU: A weak or oversubscribed host can struggle with server work even when memory is available.
  • Network: Latency, packet loss, and upload quality affect how responsive the server feels to players.
  • Disk and backups: Slow storage or overlapping backup jobs can disrupt activity.
  • Connectivity setup: A server that players cannot reach may have a firewall or port-forwarding issue rather than a RAM shortage.

For Iron Gate’s standard Steam backend, the documented default ports are 2456–2457, and outside players normally need the ports forwarded through the router and allowed by the firewall. With the -crossplay argument, traffic uses a relay and conventional port forwarding is not required for outside players; this does not remove possible latency or other connectivity problems. How to check whether your 2GB server is coping

Measure the busiest expected workload, not just the memory used immediately after startup. Check while players are online, especially when they separate to explore, then watch how usage changes over several hours or days.

On Linux

free -h
htop
top
ps -o pid,rss,cmd -C valheim_server.x86_64

free -h gives a system-wide view, while the process listing helps identify the server’s resident memory. If the binary name differs on your installation, use htop or ps to find the running server process.

On Windows

  • Open Task Manager, go to Details, and inspect valheim_server.exe.
  • Use Resource Monitor’s Memory view for more detail.
  • Use Performance Monitor if you want a longer record rather than a single snapshot.

If the machine repeatedly approaches its memory limit or actively swaps, 2GB is not enough for that workload. If memory stays comfortably below the limit during the busiest sessions you expect, it may be adequate. Swap can help avert an immediate out-of-memory failure, but it is not a substitute for RAM in a real-time server; active swapping can severely hurt responsiveness.

Basic dedicated-server setup and safe operation

  1. In Steam Library, enable the Tools filter and install Valheim Dedicated Server.
  2. Browse to its installation directory and copy the startup script. Edit the copy rather than relying on the original, which a Steam update can reset.
  3. On Windows, edit the copied start_headless_server.bat. On Linux, launch the documented script with ./start_server.sh.
  4. Set the server name, world, password, and visibility in the startup arguments. A representative configuration uses -name "My server" -port 2456 -world "Dedicated" -password "Secret" -public 1. Keep the password private.
  5. Start the server and wait for Game server connected in its output before treating it as ready.
  6. Stop it with CTRL+C rather than closing the console window with its X button.

For Linux, Iron Gate lists the packages libatomic1, libpulse-dev, and libpulse0, and says the server requires at least GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26. Its documented Docker launch path is ./docker_start_server.sh start_server.sh. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide

Keep saves and backups recoverable

Iron Gate documents these startup options: -backups 4 keeps four automatic backups; -backupshort 7200 sets a 7,200-second (two-hour) short interval; -backuplong 43200 sets a 43,200-second (12-hour) interval for subsequent long backups; and -saveinterval 1800 sets world saves every 1,800 seconds (30 minutes). These are documented defaults, not a substitute for checking that backups are being made and can be restored. Backups use disk space, and an external compression or copy job may add I/O or memory pressure. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide

Iron Gate’s default save locations are ../%USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/IronGate/Valheim on Windows and ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim on Linux. If you run the server in a container, keep world files outside disposable container storage and ensure they are included in your backup plan. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide

When should you upgrade from 2GB?

  • Memory repeatedly nears the allocation limit or swap use rises during normal play.
  • The process is killed, the server crashes, or it becomes unstable during saves or backups.
  • Players report rubber-banding or disconnects at busy times and monitoring points to exhausted memory.
  • Adding mods or other services pushes the machine close to its limit.
  • The world has grown, players routinely spread out, or your group has grown beyond the small workload you originally tested.

Before buying more RAM, compare memory use with CPU activity, logs, network latency, and disk behavior. A machine that has memory headroom but a saturated CPU or poor connection may need a different fix.

Should you self-host, use a VPS, or rent a managed server?

Option Best fit Trade-off
Self-hosted computer You already own suitable hardware and have a stable connection. Can avoid a new hosting bill, but you handle uptime, networking, updates, and backups.
VPS You want a flexible machine and are comfortable administering Linux or Windows. Requires setup and ongoing administration; confirm whether the advertised RAM covers the whole VPS and account for the OS and other services.
Managed game host You want a simpler control panel, setup help, or support. Costs recur, and advertised slots or service features do not necessarily tell you the RAM allocation. Check the live plan details before buying.

Iron Gate distributes the dedicated server through Steam’s Tools section. Self-hosting is most attractive when you already have appropriate hardware and are comfortable managing scripts, firewall rules, updates, and recovery. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide
