Is 8GB RAM Enough for Fortnite? What to Expect and When to Upgrade

Fortnite can run with 8GB RAM, but it is the minimum—not the comfortable target. Learn when 8GB is workable, why 16GB is better for most players, and how to check whether memory is causing stutters.

Yes—8GB of system RAM meets Fortnite’s listed PC minimum, so the game can run on an 8GB computer if the rest of the hardware and software are suitable. It is a constrained starting point, not the recommended target: Epic lists 16GB or more for its recommended configuration and Epic Quality Presets. For ordinary play, 8GB is most practical with few background apps and reduced settings; 16GB gives more headroom for smoother play and multitasking.

What RAM does Fortnite officially require?

Epic’s PC requirements distinguish the minimum from the recommended and higher-quality targets:

Use or target System memory
Fortnite minimum PC specification 8GB
Fortnite recommended specification 16GB or more
Epic Quality Presets specification 16GB or more
Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) minimum 16GB
UEFN recommended 32GB or more

The first three figures are Epic’s published PC targets; UEFN’s figures come from Epic’s separate UEFN requirements. A minimum means the computer meets the listed memory floor, not that it should deliver high settings, consistent frame times, or comfortable multitasking. Epic warns that minimum-spec systems may need lower graphics settings and fewer background applications.

RAM is only one part of the specification. Epic’s minimum also names a Core i3-3225 processor and Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics; its recommended configuration names a Core i5-7300U or Ryzen 3 3300U-class processor, GTX 960 or R9 280-class graphics, and an NVMe SSD. A computer can have 8GB and still run poorly if its processor, GPU, storage, operating system, drivers, or cooling are inadequate. Epic lists Windows 10 64-bit version 22H2 or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 for its minimum OS target, so memory capacity alone does not establish that an older system is supported.

What can you realistically do with 8GB?

There is no reliable FPS number you can infer from RAM capacity alone. Results vary with the CPU and GPU, resolution, settings, rendering mode, game build, map, and background workload. Use this as a practical guide rather than a performance guarantee:

How you use the PC What 8GB means
Fortnite only, few background apps Often viable if the rest of the computer meets the requirements.
Lower visual settings or Performance rendering mode The most realistic setup when memory is limited.
1080p casual play May be adequate; results depend heavily on the CPU and GPU.
High or Epic-quality settings Not the ideal memory target; Epic lists 16GB or more for its Epic Quality specification.
Fortnite with a browser, Discord, recording, or streaming More likely to feel restrictive because other programs compete for memory.
Competitive play where consistent frame times matter 16GB is the safer baseline, though it cannot guarantee a particular frame rate.
UEFN editing Below Epic’s listed 16GB minimum.

Why a game can run but still stutter

Windows, the launcher, security tools, and other programs use memory before a match begins. With only 8GB installed, less remains available for the game and its other active tasks. When memory is tight, Windows can rely more on storage-based virtual memory, which may contribute to pauses. Loading, crowded scenes, or other demanding moments can expose a shortage that is not obvious at the menu. This is general PC behavior—not a published figure for Fortnite’s exact memory use.

Integrated graphics can make the margin tighter because the graphics processor shares system memory. That does not mean every 8GB integrated-graphics PC will fail, but it is another reason 16GB is preferable when the machine supports an upgrade.

When is 8GB enough, and when should you upgrade?

Staying with 8GB can make sense if…

  • You already own the computer and mainly play Fortnite.
  • The CPU and GPU are adequate, and you are comfortable lowering settings if needed.
  • You close unnecessary programs and do not record or stream while playing.
  • Memory use is not consistently close to the system’s capacity during play.
  • Your upgrade budget is limited and the game is acceptably smooth for you.

Move to 16GB if…

  • Stutters ease or disappear when you close browsers and other applications.
  • You regularly use Discord, browser tabs, overlays, recording software, or other apps alongside Fortnite.
  • You want more headroom for normal gaming and fewer compromises from memory pressure.
  • Your PC has adequate CPU and GPU performance and can accept compatible memory.

For a new PC intended for ordinary Fortnite play, 16GB is a sensible target. Consider 32GB when UEFN, heavier creative work, streaming, or substantial multitasking is part of the plan; Epic does not list 32GB as necessary for standard Fortnite play.

Will 16GB increase Fortnite FPS?

It can improve play when 8GB is causing memory pressure: the benefit may show up as fewer pauses, more consistent frame times, or room to keep other applications open. It does not automatically double FPS, and the average frame rate may change little if the GPU or CPU is already the limiting component. A RAM upgrade will not turn an underpowered graphics processor into a high-refresh-rate gaming GPU, and it cannot fix unrelated problems such as overheating, faulty drivers, or a failing drive.

Keep system RAM and video memory (VRAM) separate in your expectations. System RAM is the computer’s main memory; VRAM is graphics memory on the GPU. Epic lists them separately, including 16GB system RAM and 8GB VRAM or higher for its Epic Quality Presets target. More system RAM does not substitute for insufficient graphics capability or VRAM.

How to make Fortnite more workable on 8GB

  1. Close other memory-heavy programs. Exit unnecessary browser tabs, launchers, recording tools, and applications before starting Fortnite. Epic also advises disabling background applications when needed.
  2. Reduce graphics demands. Lower settings such as textures, shadows, effects, and view distance if the system struggles. Try Performance rendering mode if it is available in your client; Epic describes it as a lower-visual-quality option intended to improve frame rates on older hardware (Epic’s Performance Mode overview). Follow any restart prompt after changing rendering modes.
  3. Turn off unneeded overlays and capture tools. Disable overlays or recording features you are not using, then test again.
  4. Use a healthy SSD if possible. Epic’s recommended PC specification includes an NVMe SSD. Faster storage is not a replacement for RAM, but a healthy SSD is preferable to relying on a slow or failing drive.
  5. Update Windows and graphics drivers. Retest after updates rather than changing several settings at once.

Performance Mode reduces visual workload; it cannot fix weak CPU or GPU hardware, thermal throttling, corrupted game files, or a failing storage device.

How to tell whether RAM is the bottleneck

  1. Check memory use while Fortnite is running. Open Windows Task Manager and look at total memory use during the problem, not just at the desktop.
  2. Close background applications and retest the same kind of play. If stuttering improves when memory use falls, limited RAM becomes a more plausible cause.
  3. Try lower graphics settings or Performance rendering mode. A change may help identify a workload limit, but it does not prove RAM is the cause.
  4. Disable overlays, browsers, and recording tools for a test. If the problem persists with those closed and memory is not near capacity, investigate other causes.
  5. Check temperatures and clock speeds, then update drivers and Windows. Thermal throttling or software problems can resemble a hardware shortage.
  6. Check the drive and connection separately. A healthy SSD can help with loading; network lag is different from local frame stutter.

If memory use is not near capacity, look at the GPU, CPU, temperatures, drivers, storage health, and network rather than assuming that 8GB explains every hitch. Performance Mode is not a universal remedy.

How to upgrade RAM without buying the wrong memory

Do not order a module just because it says “8GB” or “16GB.” The computer must support its memory generation, form factor, capacity, and speed. A desktop kit and a laptop kit are physically different: for example, Corsair’s cited laptop kit is DDR4 SO-DIMM, while its desktop kit is DDR4 DIMM. Those examples illustrate the formats, not a recommendation that either product will fit your computer.

  • Identify DDR generation. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable.
  • Check form factor. Desktops generally use DIMMs; laptops generally use smaller SO-DIMMs, though some systems use soldered memory.
  • Confirm slots and maximum capacity. Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s documentation. Some laptops have no upgradeable memory or only one accessible slot.
  • Check supported speed and compatibility. The system may run mixed modules at a lower supported setting, and incompatible combinations can be unstable. Prefer the manufacturer’s compatibility information or a matched kit where possible.
  • Choose a configuration the system supports. A matched 2×8GB kit is a common route to 16GB if the machine has two compatible slots; do not assume you can add a second module to every 8GB system.

If considering a single additional 8GB module, identify the installed memory first and verify generation, form factor, speed, voltage, slot availability, and total capacity support. If the processor, GPU, operating system, or storage also falls short, adding RAM alone may not make the PC suitable; compare the whole system with Epic’s requirements.
