“Servers Not Responding” means Fortnite could not complete a connection at that moment; the message alone does not tell you whether Epic’s services are down or the problem is on your network. Check Epic’s Public Status page first, especially Login if you cannot sign in or Matchmaking if you cannot join a game. If the relevant service is operational, move on to basic local connection checks.
Is Fortnite down right now?
Epic’s Public Status page showed Fortnite and its listed components as operational when checked on October 3, 2026 at 04:14:08 UTC. That is a time-specific snapshot, not a guarantee about the service now: status can change, so check the live page when you see the error.

Look beyond the overall status label and match the component to what you are doing. If the problem happens while signing in, check Login. If you reach the lobby but cannot enter a match, check Matchmaking. An operational overall label does not rule out every intermittent or platform-specific problem.
What the error can mean
Epic’s retrieved support and status pages do not define the exact “Servers Not Responding” message. It should not be treated as proof of either a widespread outage or a fault in your home network. A useful diagnostic distinction is between a service-side event, such as maintenance, and a connection-path issue involving your device or network. That distinction is described in a BearVPN troubleshooting guide, which is a secondary source rather than an official Epic definition.

What to do, in order
- Check Epic’s status page. Review Fortnite and the component that matches the point where you are stuck. Epic’s Fortnite support entry point also lists scheduled maintenance and technical-support topics.
- If there is an incident or maintenance, wait for updates. Local changes cannot restore an unavailable Epic service. For example, Epic’s status history records scheduled downtime for Fortnite v42.30 on October 1, 2026. The notice said matchmaking would be disabled 30 minutes before downtime scheduled for 4 AM ET (8 AM UTC); maintenance was marked in progress at 08:00 UTC and completed at 10:31 UTC. This is an example, not a standard duration for future updates.
- If services appear operational, try simple checks one at a time. Fully close and reopen Fortnite, restart your device, reboot your router, and check for pending game or system updates. If available, compare with another network. These are general suggestions from the secondary guide, not confirmed fixes for this specific message; none is guaranteed to work.
- Use platform-specific instructions before changing advanced settings. The retrieved Epic support entry point does not provide detailed fixes for every platform. Consult current official guidance before changing console NAT settings, DNS, firewall rules, port forwarding, or antivirus configuration; these are not universal remedies.
- Contact Epic support if the issue persists. Start from the Fortnite support entry point for current technical-support guidance.
Why matchmaking may fail before an update
Epic’s October 1 v42.30 notice provides one concrete example of planned update behavior: matchmaking was scheduled to be disabled 30 minutes before the stated downtime. If you can reach the lobby but cannot start a match around a scheduled update, check Epic’s status history and current notice before changing your network settings.
