It can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, but compatibility does not mean those games all look or run better. Game Boost and Pro-specific enhancements vary by title, so check the exact RPGs you play before upgrading.
Can the PS5 Pro play PS4 RPGs?
Yes. PlayStation says more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 Pro, while noting that a small number of PS4 games are incompatible. Its broader backward-compatibility guidance describes the overwhelming majority of the PS4 library—over 4,000 games—as playable on PS5 consoles. Those are compatibility figures, not counts of games enhanced for Pro.

Will older RPGs run better on PS5 Pro?
Sometimes, but not as a blanket rule. PlayStation says Game Boost may give some PS4 and PS5 games faster or smoother frame rates. The company also says PS5 Pro-enhanced features vary by game. Neither statement guarantees a boost for every compatible RPG, or specifies the result for a particular older game.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Check the official Pro-enhanced game information and the game’s own version details before buying. Confirm whether you play the PS4 or PS5 edition: the edition can affect which features apply. Do not assume a title benefits just because it runs on the console.
What does PSSR change for older games?
PSSR is PlayStation’s image-upscaling technology for PS5 Pro, but it is not a universal enhancement switch for an existing library. In a February 27, 2026 announcement, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny said the upgraded PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date. That figure does not identify those games as older RPGs or mean every compatible title receives the feature. See the PSSR announcement for the scope of that update.

Keep your PS5 or upgrade to Pro?
| Situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| You already own a working PS5 and mainly play older RPGs | Keeping your console is the safer value choice unless the exact games you play have a Pro benefit you want. Compatibility alone does not establish a meaningful improvement. |
| You are buying your first PS5 | The Pro may make sense if its supported features and local price suit you. Check your RPGs individually rather than relying on the library-wide compatibility count. |
| You also play supported newer games | Benefits across those games may strengthen the case, but support remains title-dependent. |
| You own physical RPGs | PS5 Pro launched as a disc-less console. Account for the separately available Disc Drive, and verify its compatibility and current availability before deciding. |
Use PlayStation’s launch announcement for the original configuration details; it states that Pro-enhanced features vary by game.
How much does the PS5 Pro cost?
Sony’s September 10, 2024 launch announcement listed MSRP at $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY including tax. These are launch prices for the November 7, 2024 release, not a current quote or deal. Check the current price in your region and include any required Disc Drive in the total.

A quick checklist before you buy
- Write down the RPGs you actually play and identify whether you use each PS4 or PS5 version.
- Check official game information for a specific Pro enhancement or Game Boost benefit; do not infer one from compatibility.
- Decide whether the stated benefit matters to you on your display and in the games you play.
- If your collection is on disc, verify the Disc Drive’s compatibility, availability, and cost.
- Compare the full local purchase cost with keeping your current PS5, and consider whether supported newer games are also part of your playtime.
