How to Customize Your Stream with Themes: OBS, Overlays, and Channel Branding

Change the OBS interface, create a distinct on-stream look with scenes and overlays, or brand your Twitch or YouTube channel page—each uses different controls.

“Stream theme” can mean the look of OBS on your computer, the visuals viewers see in your broadcast, or the branding on your Twitch or YouTube channel page. They are separate customizations: changing OBS Studio’s built-in theme changes its controls, not the video you send to viewers.

This guide shows how to change the OBS interface theme, install a custom one, and create a viewer-facing look with scenes and overlays. It also points to the separate Twitch and YouTube channel-branding controls.

Choose what you want to customize

Customization What it changes Where to work
OBS application theme The appearance of OBS Studio’s controls on your computer OBS Settings
On-stream visual theme Scenes, overlays, text, transitions, alerts, and other elements in the broadcast OBS scenes and sources, or a ready-made asset package
Channel branding Your platform channel page, such as its accent color, banner, layout, and information Twitch channel controls or YouTube Studio

Pick the route that matches the result you want. An OBS interface theme will not add an overlay to your stream, and channel-page branding will not change your OBS controls.

Change the OBS Studio theme

For a built-in theme, open OBS Settings and find the Theme drop-down. The OBS Project’s Themes Guide, published January 13, 2022, gives the path as Settings > General > Theme. In OBS Studio 30.2 and later, the setting is in Appearance, according to the project’s theme-system documentation. Labels and available themes can vary by version; if your interface differs, consult the OBS Project’s Themes Guide.

  3. Open the Theme drop-down.
  4. Select a built-in theme or a custom theme you have installed, then apply or confirm the change if prompted.

This changes the application interface only. To change what viewers see, customize scenes and sources instead.

Install a custom OBS theme

OBS recommends placing custom themes in the user configuration directory rather than only inside the application installation. The theme directory may not exist yet, so create it if needed. The documented locations are:

  1. Close OBS Studio before changing theme files.
  2. Open the user theme directory for your operating system, creating the themes folder if necessary.
  3. Follow the theme author’s installation instructions to place the stylesheet and any required image folder in the appropriate location. OBS describes themes as QSS plus custom images; third-party packages may have their own structure.
  4. Reopen OBS and select the installed theme from the Theme setting. If it does not appear, check the folder location, package structure, and compatibility with your OBS version.

OBS themes use QSS, a subset of CSS 2, alongside custom images. Advanced theme features are version-dependent: the OBS theme-system documentation describes features added in OBS Studio 30.2, including variants that expose properties in Appearance settings and automatic reload for theme development. Do not assume those options are available in older versions. Community themes are available through OBS forums; review the source and compatibility information before installing third-party files.

Build a theme viewers can see

Viewer-facing customization happens in your scenes and sources. In OBS, arrange image and text sources over the gameplay, camera, or other base content. Create separate scenes for different moments—such as starting soon, live gameplay, a break, and ending—and use transitions to move between them.

  1. Create or select a scene in OBS.
  2. Add your main content source, such as a game capture or camera, and arrange it in the preview.
  3. Add image sources for a background, frame, logo, or other overlay asset, then position and resize them so they do not cover essential content.
  4. Add text sources for labels or other information you want viewers to read. Check that text remains legible against the background.
  5. Repeat for other scenes, then configure transitions and preview each scene before going live.

The OBS Project’s “Be Right Back” tutorial demonstrates building a scene from multiple layers and adding text and static PNG or JPG images. For image assets, Elgato’s overlay guidance recommends PNG for static overlays that need transparency and WEBM for animated bars that need transparency through the animation. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that every file will work in every setup: test each asset in its intended scene.

If you prefer a ready-made starting point, Streamlabs describes theme packages that can include starting-soon, live, be-right-back, and ending scenes, with overlays and alerts. A package is optional; you can build and customize scenes yourself. Check that third-party assets are compatible with your current software and fit your stream layout.

Customize your Twitch or YouTube channel page

Platform branding is separate from OBS. Twitch’s Channel Page Setup guide covers controls such as accent color, an offline video-player banner, and channel panels. Some features described in Twitch’s Creator Dashboard guide are limited to Affiliates and Partners, so check eligibility before planning around a gated feature.

For YouTube, use YouTube Studio’s Channel customization controls to edit your channel layout, branding, and basic information. These affect your YouTube channel page, not the OBS application interface or the scenes in your broadcast.

The OBS Studio Overview Guide recommends testing a setup before the first live stream. Apply the same care after a visual change: preview every scene, check that text and important gameplay or camera areas remain visible, and test transitions or animated elements before going live.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • The OBS interface changed, but the stream did not: that is expected when you change the application theme. Add or edit scene sources to change the broadcast image.
  • A custom theme is missing from the menu: verify that its files are in the user theme directory for your operating system, that the folder structure follows the theme’s instructions, and that the theme supports your OBS version.
  • A theme looks different from its preview: check the theme’s compatibility notes and any version-specific requirements. Themes may rely on custom images or newer features.
  • An overlay has a solid background instead of transparency: confirm that you have an asset format that supports the transparency you need. Elgato recommends PNG for static overlays and WEBM for animated bars with transparency; test the actual file in OBS.
  • Text or an overlay obscures gameplay or a camera: reposition or resize the source in the scene, then preview the full scene rather than relying on the editor alone.
  • A Twitch branding option is unavailable: check the Twitch guide’s eligibility notes; some Creator Dashboard features are limited to Affiliates and Partners.
