The available evidence shows three related but different things: significant job cuts, increasing use of generative AI at work, and growing concern about AI among surveyed professionals. For two widely reported 2026 job-cut announcements, the companies explicitly said AI was not the reason—but those statements explain only those employers’ decisions, not the industry as a whole.
What the 2026 game-industry survey found
The GDC Festival of Gaming’s 2026 State of the Game Industry survey drew responses from more than 2,300 game-industry professionals. Its figures describe respondents, not a census of every worker or studio.
- 28% of respondents said they had been laid off in the preceding two years. Among US respondents, the figure was 33%.
- Half said their current or most recent employer had conducted layoffs in the preceding 12 months.
- 36% said they used generative-AI tools as part of their job. Reported use was 30% among respondents at game studios and 58% among respondents at publishing companies, support teams, and marketing/PR firms.
These results establish that layoffs and workplace AI use are both present in the surveyed workforce. They do not show that the people laid off were replaced by AI, or that AI caused the reported layoffs. The survey figures are from GDC’s 2026 report.
AI use is rising, while professional opinion is increasingly negative
In the same GDC 2026 report, 52% of respondents said generative AI was having a negative impact on the industry, compared with 30% in the 2025 report and 18% in the 2024 report. About 7% of respondents in 2026 said its impact was positive.

Those percentages measure respondents’ views, not AI’s objectively measured effect on employment, creativity, or the industry’s finances. The 2025 report also said 11% of developer respondents had been laid off in the preceding year. That is a different survey year and reporting period from the 2026 finding that 28% of respondents had been laid off over the preceding two years; the figures should not be treated as a like-for-like annual trend.
What employers said about specific cuts
Company explanations help clarify particular announcements, but they cannot establish why other studios are cutting jobs. These cases also differ in scope: Epic is a game company, Microsoft’s July announcement covered company roles broadly, and Sony’s cited announcement is historical context.

| Employer and announcement | Scale and stated explanation | What the company said about AI |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Games, March 2026 | Epic announced more than 1,000 employee layoffs and over $500 million in identified cost savings. CEO Tim Sweeney attributed the cuts to a downturn in Fortnite engagement and spending. | Sweeney wrote: “Since it’s a thing now, I should note that the layoffs aren’t related to AI.” This is Epic’s explanation for its own cuts. |
| Microsoft, July 6, 2026 | Microsoft announced around 4,800 role eliminations, described as about 2.1% of its global workforce. The cited company update does not present these as gaming-industry-specific cuts. | The company update said: “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI.” The statement applies to those role eliminations. |
| Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2024 | Sony announced a planned global headcount reduction of about 8%, or about 900 people. | The cited announcement did not identify AI as the specific reason for the planned reduction. |
Epic’s and Microsoft’s statements are direct evidence about what those companies said, not proof that AI has played no role in any other employer’s decisions. Sony’s announcement predates the 2026 survey and is useful as context for a longer period of industry job cuts, not as evidence about current AI adoption.

The evidence supports a careful answer: layoffs are widespread enough to feature prominently in GDC’s survey, AI use is reported by a substantial share of respondents, and most surveyed professionals in 2026 viewed AI’s impact negatively. But these findings do not establish a general causal link between AI and game-industry layoffs. The survey measures reported experiences and opinions; the company statements provide explanations for specific decisions. Neither supplies a full causal analysis of employment changes across the industry.

For workers trying to assess a particular layoff, the most reliable distinction is between a company’s stated reason and a demonstrated cause. A company may identify business conditions, restructuring, or another rationale; without further evidence, it is not sound to assume that AI caused the cuts simply because the employer also uses AI tools.
