Arcane is treated as part of the shared canon of League of Legends and Runeterra. The important qualification is that Riot Games is aligning older lore gradually; it has not said every existing champion biography and story already fits together perfectly.
What Riot’s shared-canon policy means
On October 12, 2023, Riot Games announced that “all new storytelling is part of one shared canon.” The statement sets the continuity policy, but it does not name Arcane specifically. Riot also said that reconciling existing material would take time: rather than retconning every champion or story at once, it would weave inconsistent threads together as it revisited parts of the League universe. Riot’s Dev Update gives examples of older inconsistencies, including Hextech and Yorick’s involvement in Sentinels of Light.
How Arcane fits into Runeterra
A League Universe reference records Arcane as confirmed canon to the primary Runeterra universe following Riot’s 2023 lore update. That specific classification comes from a secondary lore reference, rather than a direct sentence in Riot’s update. Taken together, Riot’s shared-canon policy and the reference’s classification support the straightforward answer: Arcane is part of the current shared continuity, not simply an unrelated adaptation.
Official franchise descriptions offer context, too. Netflix calls Arcane the origin story of League champions Vi and Jinx. In a November 26, 2024 article, co-creator Christian Linke described it as “the first of many stories that we want to tell in Runeterra.” That statement situates the show within Riot’s Runeterra storytelling, though it is not itself a formal canon-policy declaration. Netflix’s series overview provides that description and quote.

Why some older League lore may not match the show
Riot’s policy does not mean every pre-existing biography, story, or continuity detail was rewritten to match Arcane. The company acknowledged that League lore contains inconsistencies and said it would reconcile them over time as it returned to different parts of the universe. So an apparent mismatch with older material is not, by itself, evidence that the show sits outside canon; it may reflect legacy lore that has not yet been aligned.

Not automatically. Riot has celebrated Arcane across League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Wild Rift, and Legends of Runeterra with game content and activations. Those appearances show the franchise’s reach across Riot’s games, but a skin, event mode, playable match, or promotional scenario should not be treated as a literal event in the show’s narrative without separate confirmation. Riot’s Season 2 game-activation guide describes these celebrations and content.
