Xbox’s first-party pipeline looks more active, but the evidence does not yet prove that its games are performing better. Asha Sharma has set out a clearer commitment to great games and console, and Xbox’s 2026 announcements span returning franchises, new projects, and two stated console exclusives. That is evidence of renewed intent and a broader announced slate—not proof of stronger sales, engagement, or player reception.
What did Asha Sharma say she would change?
Microsoft announced Sharma as CEO of Microsoft Gaming on February 20, 2026. In her message, she laid out three priorities: great games, a return to Xbox with renewed commitment beginning with console, and the future of play. She said Xbox would invest in iconic franchises and bold ideas while serving players across PC, mobile, and cloud. The message’s central test is straightforward: “Everything begins here. We must have great games beloved by players before we do anything.” (Microsoft’s announcement and Sharma’s message.)
Her console commitment is significant, but it is not a promise to restrict Xbox games to console. Sharma also described gaming as extending across devices, and Xbox’s announced plans include games with broader platform availability. The strategy is therefore a renewed emphasis on console alongside a multi-device business, not an announced reversal to console-only releases.
What does the 2026 first-party slate show?
Xbox’s January Developer_Direct recap presented a mix of established series and newer projects. The dates and windows below are what Xbox announced in January; treat them as announcements at that time, not confirmation that a game subsequently shipped on schedule. (Xbox Developer_Direct recap.)

| Game | January 2026 announcement | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Forza Horizon 6 | Announced for May 19, 2026 | A new entry in a prominent returning franchise |
| Fable | Announced for autumn 2026 | A major franchise return |
| Beast of Reincarnation | Announced for summer 2026 | A new project in the first-party lineup |
| Kiln | Announced for spring 2026 | A Double Fine project in the slate |
The slate is meaningful as a pipeline: it includes recognizable series, new ideas, and projects from different studios. But an announced game is not a released game, and the size of a slate says nothing by itself about quality or commercial performance.
Are Xbox console exclusives coming back?
Xbox’s June showcase recap named Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as Xbox console exclusives, adding: “These are not timed exclusives.” The same announcement said games already announced as multiplatform would keep those plans. (Xbox Games Showcase recap.)

- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
This is a concrete but selective exclusivity statement. It supports the view that Xbox intends to have console-exclusive releases, while offering no basis for saying that all—or even most—first-party games will be exclusive. The June recap also added or updated a wider set of projects, including Halo: Campaign Evolved, State of Decay 3, and Gears of War: E-Day. Announcements and trailers expand the pipeline; they do not establish release outcomes.
Is the plan working?
That depends on what “working” means. On strategy and announced activity, there are signs of a shift: Sharma has publicly prioritized games and console, Xbox has outlined a substantial slate, and it has identified two non-timed console exclusives. On results, the evidence is not conclusive. The official statements and event recaps discussed here do not provide comparable first-party sales, engagement, or player-satisfaction figures.

It would therefore be premature to say Xbox’s first-party games are demonstrably “back on the up” in performance. The supportable conclusion is narrower: the announced pipeline and stated strategy point to renewed activity, while whether players are getting better-performing games remains to be established through releases and outcome data.

- Games shipped, not just announced: Compare actual releases with the dates and windows Xbox announced, and distinguish delayed projects from games that reached players.
- Player response and engagement: Look for attributable, dated evidence rather than treating a trailer, showcase appearance, or social reaction as a measure of broad reception.
- Comparable commercial results: Sales or other performance claims need a clear source and a like-for-like basis; the announcements cited here do not supply that evidence.
- Platform follow-through: Check each game’s stated platforms individually. The two exclusives named in June do not establish a universal exclusivity policy.
There is also a naming change to keep in mind when reading later statements: Microsoft’s editor’s note says Microsoft Gaming became known as XBOX on April 23, 2026, and Sharma’s title changed to CEO XBOX. Her original appointment announcement and strategic message date to February, when she was CEO of Microsoft Gaming.
