What Ubisoft actually said about Assassin’s Creed co-op
On March 4, 2026, Ubisoft Head of Content Jean Guesdon wrote that the company was “looking into bringing co‑op back to Assassin’s Creed.” That is an exploration of co-op for the franchise; it is not an announcement that a particular game, including Shadows, will receive the feature. Ubisoft’s March 2026 franchise update also said that Shadows was entering its “final phase of support.”
The distinction matters: Ubisoft has expressed interest in co-op returning somewhere in Assassin’s Creed, but the official wording does not identify a game, describe a mode, or commit to a release.
What the Shadows final update means
On June 16, 2026, Ubisoft called its new Shadows release the game’s final major update. It includes the Black Tides story content and Domains, a feature Ubisoft Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois described as a “hardcore RPG replayability feature.” The update was announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Apple-silicon Mac. Neither Ubisoft’s update announcement nor the accompanying Xbox Wire interview with Lemay-Comtois announced co-op for Shadows.

Did Ubisoft cancel a Shadows co-op mode?
There is no official confirmation in the sources reviewed that Ubisoft had announced or then canceled a Shadows co-op mode. Separate reports describe a canceled project called AC League, but Ubisoft’s franchise update does not name that project or confirm its development history.
PC Gamer reported on March 4, 2026, citing reporting about AC League, that it was developed at Ubisoft Annecy and was initially conceived as a substantial Shadows expansion before possibly shifting toward a standalone project. GameSpot’s February 5, 2026 report also attributed the cancellation account to French outlet Origami. Those are reported project details, not an Ubisoft-confirmed account of a canceled Shadows mode.
