No. By map territory, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is roughly the size of Assassin’s Creed Origins and smaller than Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, according to associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois. That is an approximate developer comparison—not a standardized ranking of every game in the series.
How big is the Assassin’s Creed Shadows map?
In a report published June 12, 2024, GameSpot quoted Lemay-Comtois describing Shadows as “about roughly similar to Origins” and “smaller than Valhalla in terms of territory.” The comparison answers the map-size question, but it does not provide a measured area or rank every Assassin’s Creed map. GameSpot’s report reproduces the developer’s comments to VGC.
How does Shadows compare with Odyssey?
The developer also drew a distinction between the games’ water coverage. He said Shadows has coastlines and Lake Biwa, but not the extensive water he associated with Odyssey’s Greece, which he described as half water. This helps explain why map comparisons depend on what is counted: territory, land, and water are not interchangeable measures. The comments do not establish a numerical area comparison with Odyssey.
What does the game’s map represent?
Shadows depicts part of Japan, not the whole country. Its map includes major cities such as Kyoto and Osaka. Lemay-Comtois said the team wanted the journeys between destinations to feel credible while remaining approachable, rather than making players spend the equivalent of four days riding between them, as reported by GameSpot.

Why map area does not tell the whole story
Ubisoft frames exploration as gradual discovery. The map initially shows region names and suggestive drawings; exploring uncovers more local detail. Viewpoints reveal nearby points of interest rather than automatically exposing entire regions and every opportunity icon. Players can use observation, scouts, and an optional Pathfinder route to help find places and navigate. Ubisoft’s exploration overview attributes the approach to game director Charles, who said, “We didn’t want to hold the player’s hand too much with icons and markers”.
The setting also includes castle towns, ports, shrines, pastoral landscapes, changing seasons, and reactive environments. Naoe’s shinobi style emphasizes stealth and agility, while Yasuke’s samurai style is more combat-oriented. These contrasts affect how players move through and engage with the world; a territory comparison alone cannot capture that experience. See Ubisoft’s game overview.

What “biggest” can—and cannot—mean
“Biggest” might mean territory, land area, total area including water, quantity of activities, or time to finish. The developer comparison supports only an approximate statement about territory and a qualitative distinction about water. It does not give square kilometers, comparable content counts, or completion times, so those measures cannot be used to claim a series-wide ranking from these comments.
