Atelier Yumia producer Junzo Hosoi named Valheim as a reference for crafting, housing, and open-world design. The interview reviewed does not identify Genshin Impact or Persona as inspirations. Those games are useful comparison points, but they should not be presented as confirmed influences.
Which games did Atelier Yumia’s producer name as inspirations?
In a February 20, 2025 interview with Siliconera, Junzo Hosoi, producer of Atelier Yumia and head of Gust, discussed games that informed aspects of the project. He specifically mentioned Valheim, both for crafting and for ideas around housing and open-world design.
On crafting and the housing system, Hosoi said: “There is a popularity of crafting games as well, which I happen to like myself, such as Valheim. So, that is why we wanted to implement those into the series with this housing system.”
Discussing open-world content, he added: “For me, it’s the game Valheim. Of course, I didn’t just copy the design of Valheim, but I was really impressed with playing this game.” He also cited Skyrim, Oblivion, and the open-field design of Halo as points of reference. These comments describe influences and admiration, not a claim that Atelier Yumia reproduces those games.

- Create items interwoven with “mana”
- SYNTHESIS: Manipulate the "mana" residing in materials to create new items based on recipes. The items you craft will exhibit powerful effects in various situations, such as exploration and combat. The strength of an item's power depends on the materials used in synthesis, so select your materials carefully while assessing the power of the embedded mana
- A captivating variety of actions with “range” and “items”
- In real-time combat, you'll be tested on your ability to make split-second decisions. Utilise two types of attack ranges ("range") and switch between skills to fight strategically. Additionally, synthesised items can transform into shapes such as swords or spears, which can be used to attack. Since these items are reusable, don't hesitate to deploy them and drive away enemies that stand in your way.
Genshin Impact and Persona are comparisons, not confirmed inspirations
The interview does not name Genshin Impact or Persona as influences. Their presence in the article title’s comparison frame should not be mistaken for a statement by Hosoi or Gust. It is reasonable to compare games by their systems or feel, but that is analysis rather than confirmed developer intent.
Other inspirations mentioned informally
The Siliconera interviewer also reported informal post-interview comments that Yumia’s motorcycle was partly inspired by the bike in Akira, and that Flammi drew partly on R2-D2 and C-3PO from Star Wars. The interviewer distinguished these as informal discussion rather than remarks from the formal Q&A.
What Atelier Yumia shares with open-world and crafting games
KOEI TECMO describes Atelier Yumia as an action RPG set on the ruined continent of Aladiss. Yumia and her companions investigate the cataclysm that destroyed it and the lost history of an empire where alchemy once flourished but is now taboo. The publisher’s September 2, 2024 announcement introduces that setting.

The comparison to Valheim makes most sense around crafting, gathering, and having a place to build, rather than as a claim that the games share the same overall structure. KOEI TECMO’s November 18, 2024 gameplay overview describes a loop that includes gathering materials, synthesizing items, exploring, and fighting.
Alchemy, exploration, and combat
Synthesis consumes mana and uses the Resonance Synthesis system. Crafted items can support combat or exploration, so collecting resources feeds into more than just equipment-making. Combat is real-time, with close- and ranged-range skills, character switching during fights, and team actions.
Housing and camp functions
Players can build and decorate a base, then raise its comfort level to gain bonuses. Camps offer places to cook or rest. That makes the home-building feature part of the game’s practical progression, not merely decoration; it is also the clearest concrete connection to Hosoi’s stated interest in crafting games such as Valheim.

- Yumia wields a staff with the ability to shoot. This feature lets her collect distant ingredients during exploration or gain an advantageous start in battles by hitting monsters from afar!
- Travel across the vast continent that was once the Aladissian Empire, where all civilization has perished. Explore a vast open world made up of different biomes as you make your way through these unknown lands.
- Not only will fans be able to craft items without having to return to their base thanks to the “Simple Synthesis” feature, but for the first time in the series, fans will be also able to build, furnish, and decorate their own base with the all-new “Building” feature!
How to compare Atelier Yumia with Genshin Impact, Persona, and Valheim
None of the cited publisher descriptions establishes a direct influence from Genshin Impact or Persona. A useful comparison should therefore focus on observable design, not presumed inspiration. Consider these questions when deciding whether the games appeal to you for similar reasons:
- Exploration and traversal: How does each game structure its world, and what does movement let you do?
- Crafting: How much do gathered resources matter, and how central is crafting to progression?
- Combat and party control: Does the game emphasize real-time action, switching characters, or coordinated team actions?
- Building: Is a home mainly cosmetic, or does it provide useful bonuses and services?
- Narrative: Does its story focus on themes such as exploration, lost history, or the meaning and consequences of its central powers?
For Atelier Yumia, the confirmed description points to gathering and alchemy, real-time party combat, base bonuses, and a story about a fallen civilization and forbidden alchemy. Comparing those features with another game is fair; saying that game inspired Atelier Yumia requires a separate, attributable statement.
