Yes—if you want a demanding survival roguelite where fleet logistics, morale and political mistrust matter as much as weapons. Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes captures the franchise’s pressure better than a straightforward space-combat game, but its menu-heavy management, severe failures and slow opening will test anyone expecting a relaxed adventure.
It is also recognisably FTL-like, with limited preparation between attacks, expeditions, ship systems and real-time battles with tactical pause. Its larger fleet scale and Battlestar-specific human drama give it a distinct identity rather than making it a clone.

What Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes is
Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes is a single-player survival-fleet-management roguelite developed by Alt Shift and published by Dotemu. It released for PC on May 11, 2026; Dotemu lists Steam and GOG as the storefronts. You command a Gunstar Captain leading survivors away from the Cylon attack, with Admiral Adama’s call to rejoin the Battlestar Galactica as the strategic objective.
Dotemu’s official description calls it “a story-rich tactical roguelite with hard choices and intense space battles.” That wording is important: the game is not a linear campaign in which every battle can be won. Your fleet is trying to stay alive long enough to jump to the next sector, and the Cylon force is an ongoing deadline rather than a final boss waiting at the end of a conventional level.

Each run combines procedural narrative events, fleet administration and real-time combat. Between assaults you decide whether to search for supplies, send an expedition, repair a damaged ship, improve a system, train crew, settle a faction dispute or investigate a possible infiltrator. The available time is deliberately short, so every useful action means declining another one.
Repeated attempts unlock additional options, including up to four starting fleets according to the Steam listing. Alt Shift’s earlier demo announcement described a preview containing one of four playable fleets and four of twelve sectors; those figures describe the demo’s scope, not a promise about the complete game’s final content.
How a typical run works
1. Prepare before the next Cylon assault
The fleet-management phase is a countdown. Steam describes limited turns before the next attack, while Dotemu frames the interval as a short window in which you must choose what matters most. There is no universally correct order. A damaged ship may need immediate repairs, but spending the turn on maintenance can leave a faction crisis unresolved or an expedition unfunded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Resources: Expeditions to points of interest can bring back materials and other supplies, but they consume the same scarce time used for repairs and social decisions.
- Personnel: Urgent situations require assigning people as well as supplies. Moving a specialist to solve one crisis can weaken another ship’s readiness.
- Ships: Upgrades improve survivability or firepower, but a stronger hull does not remove the need to manage crew, morale and faction demands.
- Training: Crew development is an investment in later encounters, not an instant combat button. Training now can be worthwhile if the fleet can survive the next assault without that person elsewhere.
2. Resolve narrative and faction crises
The event layer is where the license’s human conflict enters the management loop. Survivors do not behave like a single harmonious crew. Factions have competing needs, and the resources that satisfy one group may create resentment in another. The decisions are therefore practical as well as moral: a choice that stabilises morale can still leave a ship under-repaired or consume supplies needed for a future jump.
Dotemu also warns that you may need to investigate possible impostors. The threat is not limited to an enemy fleet visible on the tactical map; a human-looking Cylon infiltrator can undermine the group from inside. The uncertainty makes routine personnel decisions consequential, because trusting the wrong person can be more damaging than losing a weapon system.
3. Fight in real time, with tactical pause
When an assault arrives, Scattered Hopes shifts to real-time space combat. Alt Shift describes the battles as tactical and equipped with a tactical-pause option, allowing you to stop the action, issue orders and reassess before resuming. This is not a pure turn-based system: threats continue to develop when you are not paused, and the value of a pause depends on how quickly you read the battlefield.

The tactical problem is larger than keeping one ship alive. You are managing a fleet or squadron, deciding where to concentrate fire, which vessel can absorb damage and when to disengage. Dotemu’s premise is explicit that you cannot win an all-out battle; the objective is to survive long enough to jump onward. A tactically successful retreat can therefore be a better result than destroying every enemy.
4. Live with the consequences
Roguelite structure means a failed attempt ends that run rather than delivering a simple reload to a safe checkpoint. The exact value of what carries forward is tied to the game’s unlock system, but the key decision is made inside each run: whether to protect current fleet strength or spend it pursuing a longer-term advantage. That tension is why a small repair, a faction compromise and an expedition can matter as much as a weapon upgrade.
Why it feels like Battlestar Galactica
The setting is not merely a visual skin over generic space battles. The franchise’s defining pressure comes from a vulnerable population fleeing a superior enemy, and Scattered Hopes builds its loop around that imbalance. You are always trying to buy enough time to reach the next sector, never preparing for a clean campaign in which every encounter is on your terms.
Reviewers have singled out the social systems as the game’s strongest license connection. Fraser Brown’s PC Gamer review, published May 15, 2026, praises the combination of competing factions, crew morale, ship-health thresholds and the danger of human-looking Cylon infiltration. Brown writes, “The human element is what makes it a Battlestar Galactica game.” That is a critical judgment, not an official guarantee, but it accurately identifies what separates this adaptation from a generic fleet roguelite.
Morale also changes the meaning of damage. A ship that is technically operational may still be approaching a dangerous threshold if its crew is exhausted, divided or unwilling to cooperate. Faction disputes force you to think about who benefits from a decision, not just whether the fleet gains a numerical resource. The result is a chain of compromises that resembles the show’s political and military conflicts more closely than a simple upgrade tree would.
The infiltrator possibility reinforces the same theme. Cylon suspicion is not represented only by an enemy marker in combat; it is a question about trust inside the survivor community. Investigating consumes time and resources, while ignoring the possibility may allow a hidden threat to grow. The system gives ordinary management choices a dramatic edge without requiring every event to be a scripted reference to the television series.

Is it like FTL?
Yes in structure, not in exact implementation. PC Gamer describes a strong FTL-like tactical foundation, while also arguing that fleet management and larger-scale combat give Scattered Hopes its own identity. The comparison is most useful when broken into the systems that actually affect play:
| Comparison axis | Scattered Hopes | What the FTL comparison tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation between encounters | Limited turns before the next Cylon assault; choose expeditions, crisis response, repairs, upgrades, training or investigations. | It shares the pressure of deciding how to spend a short interlude, but the event and faction workload is broader than a simple room-to-room route. |
| Combat control | Real-time space battles with tactical pause; you direct a fleet or squadron rather than a lone ship. | Pause-and-command tactics will feel familiar, while the larger scale changes target priorities and damage management. |
| Strategic objective | Survive long enough to jump to the next sector; an all-out victory against the pursuer is not the premise. | Like FTL, survival and route decisions matter more than clearing every enemy, but the escape framing is specifically tied to the Cylon pursuit. |
| Failure and replay | Runs can end in defeat, with roguelite unlocks available across repeated attempts and up to four starting fleets listed on Steam. | Expect experimentation and learning across attempts rather than a single uninterrupted story route. |
| Human drama | Factions, crew morale, personnel assignments and possible Cylon infiltration influence decisions. | This is the major Battlestar-specific layer; it is not evidence that the two games have identical event or progression systems. |
| Management workload | Multiple menus cover fleet condition, people, supplies, upgrades, training and narrative crises. | Players seeking a lighter, faster space adventure should be cautious; Space.com specifically calls the experience heavily menu-based. |
Calling it “the next FTL” would therefore be too narrow. The useful expectation is an FTL-like survival rhythm with more attention paid to fleet-level administration and interpersonal instability. If what you liked in FTL was pausing to make difficult choices under pressure, the foundation is present. If you wanted a direct mechanical recreation, the scale and social systems will feel different.
Combat, fleet health and decision pressure
Combat works best when treated as one part of a longer survival calculation. A battle is not an isolated test of firepower because damage carries into the next management phase, where repairs compete with expeditions and political obligations. A ship that survives with its hull barely above a critical threshold may force the next several decisions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That creates a useful distinction between tactical and strategic success:
- Tactical success: pause at the right moment, distribute orders, protect vulnerable vessels and exit the encounter alive.
- Strategic success: preserve enough ships, supplies and personnel to handle the next crisis after the fight.
- Human success: keep factions and morale from collapsing while you make those material trade-offs.
PC Gamer’s review highlights ship-health thresholds alongside morale and faction needs, which explains why the game can remain tense even when your weapons are performing well. A combat victory that leaves a key ship in poor condition may be a delayed loss. Conversely, abandoning an objective or retreating can be the correct response to a battle you cannot afford to win conventionally.
Difficulty, pacing and the early-game barrier
Scattered Hopes is designed to feel oppressive rather than comfortable. Fran Ruiz’s Space.com review, also published May 15, 2026, calls it a relentlessly downbeat roguelite and stresses its high difficulty. Ruiz describes layers of crew management, resources and dialogue delivered through menus, and reports that the early progression can take time to get moving.

That slow ramp is a meaningful buying consideration. The first hours are not presented as a generous tutorial campaign in which you quickly unlock a dominant build. You are learning which crises can be deferred, how much damage a ship can absorb, when an expedition is worth its opportunity cost and how faction demands interact. Players who enjoy discovering a system through failed runs may see the pacing as deliberate. Players who want immediate variety or frequent rewards may find the opening barrier frustrating.

The difficulty also changes how you should interpret a bad run. Losing a fleet is not necessarily evidence that a single fight was unfair; a poor earlier allocation of personnel, an ignored crisis or an upgrade purchased at the wrong time may have created the fatal position. At the same time, the menu density means the game can make those causes difficult to diagnose until you have repeated the sequence. That learning curve is part of the roguelite design, but it is not a minor inconvenience.
What critics and Steam players are saying
The two published reviews agree that the game is demanding, but they emphasise different strengths. PC Gamer’s Fraser Brown praises the tactical combat and the human drama created by factions, morale and infiltration. Space.com’s Fran Ruiz focuses on the oppressive mood, menu-heavy management and the time it takes for early progression to open up. Read together, they suggest a game whose strongest ideas are also the source of its greatest friction: the systems that make the setting feel authentic are the systems that require the most patience.

Who should play it
Strong match
- Battlestar Galactica fans who want faction conflict, morale and infiltration to affect strategy rather than appear only as story scenes.
- FTL fans comfortable with pausing real-time combat, protecting a fragile fleet and learning through failed runs.
- Strategy players who enjoy choosing between mutually useful actions under a hard deadline.
- Players who prefer a bleak survival tone to a power fantasy in which every enemy can be defeated cleanly.
Proceed cautiously
- Players who dislike reading menus, assigning personnel and revisiting several management screens between battles.
- Anyone expecting a relaxed space exploration game or a conventional linear campaign.
- Players who need rapid early progression, generous difficulty or a reliable way to reload before every consequential decision.
- Anyone buying primarily for multiplayer or console support, neither of which is established in the listed PC information.
What makes the purchase worthwhile—and what may not
The strongest reason to buy is the interaction of systems. A Cylon threat outside the fleet, a faction dispute inside it and a damaged ship competing for the same limited turn create pressure that a combat-only adaptation could not. The game’s best ideas reinforce one another: survival gives the resource decisions urgency, resource scarcity gives faction choices consequences, and faction instability makes the setting feel like Battlestar Galactica rather than an interchangeable space roguelite.
The main risk is that the same density can obscure the fun. Scattered Hopes asks you to learn a large set of relationships before it offers the confidence of mastery. Its opening can feel slow, and its difficulty means that an apparently sensible decision may reveal its cost several events later. The reviews support describing that as a deliberate but demanding design, not as a universal flaw.
At the listed regular price, the decision is easiest for players who already know they enjoy management-heavy roguelites. For everyone else, use the store’s current regional price and the published requirements as a practical check, then decide whether the combination of tactical pause, fleet administration and bleak narrative pressure sounds like your preferred kind of strategy game.
Verdict: a serious Battlestar adaptation with a demanding core
Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes earns the franchise connection through pressure and people. Its procedural events, faction conflicts, morale problems and possible infiltrator make survival feel socially unstable, while real-time battles with tactical pause provide the immediate tactical layer. The result is clearly inspired by FTL’s escape-and-manage rhythm, yet its fleet scale and human systems give it a separate personality.
That authenticity comes with a cost: substantial menu work, a severe difficulty curve and an early progression ramp that may feel slow. It is best approached as a demanding roguelite in which retreat, compromise and an imperfect survivor fleet are valid outcomes—not as a power trip or a relaxed tour of the Battlestar universe.
