What “cross-platform” means for Borderlands 2
Cross-platform play lets people using different platforms join the same online game. Online co-op alone does not do that: an Xbox listing can confirm that Xbox players can play together without confirming that they can join PC or PlayStation players.

Xbox lists Borderlands 2 online co-op for 2–4 players, but that is the co-op capacity on the Xbox listing—not a crossplay feature. Steam also identifies the game as co-op, without documenting cross-platform matchmaking in the support page reviewed.
Can you play Borderlands 2 with a friend on another platform?
For a PC-to-Xbox, PlayStation-to-Xbox, or Switch-to-PC group, treat the editions as separate multiplayer pools. The official materials reviewed do not document cross-platform matchmaking, so do not buy a different-platform copy on the assumption it will connect to your existing group.

The reviewed official listings do not provide a complete compatibility chart for every console generation, storefront, or edition. In particular, they do not establish every pairing between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation generations, Xbox 360, PC storefronts, or Switch. Check the exact edition and console requirements before coordinating a purchase.
Check edition and co-op setup before playing
- Match platform family and storefront. Confirm that everyone is using a compatible Borderlands 2 edition on the same platform family; the official materials reviewed do not document cross-platform matchmaking.
- Confirm the exact game edition and DLC. The Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary FAQ lists PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 availability and says the DLC is not available for the Xbox 360 version. Do not assume DLC or edition compatibility across console generations.
- Choose online co-op or local split-screen. Online co-op is multiplayer over a network; split-screen is local play on one system. Split-screen does not let players on separate platforms join each other.
The official 2K Store describes the Nintendo Switch Borderlands Legendary Collection as including Borderlands 2 and cooperative play. That confirms a Switch edition with co-op; it does not establish that Switch players can join players on other platforms.

Does Borderlands 3 crossplay mean Borderlands 2 does?
No. Gearbox’s crossplay announcement is explicitly for Borderlands 3. A feature in that separate game is not evidence of crossplay in Borderlands 2, and the existence of SHiFT features in the franchise does not establish BL2 crossplay.
