Borderlands 4 has an unusually broad set of co-op options: up to four players online, cross-play, two-player couch split-screen on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and mixed parties that combine a local split-screen pair with two online friends. Those features make a strong case for calling it the series’ most co-op-friendly entry yet—but that is a feature-based judgment, not a measured ranking against every earlier game.
How many people can play Borderlands 4 together?
Online parties support up to four players. Play can be drop-in and drop-out, and Gearbox says two people playing locally in split-screen can join two online friends, filling a four-player party. That makes the game’s co-op options more flexible than a choice between couch play and online play.

For the game’s release and current platform availability, 2K lists September 12, 2025, as the release date and PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store as platforms: 2K’s Borderlands 4 page.
Can you play Borderlands 4 split-screen?
Yes, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Official Borderlands Support specifies two-player split-screen on those consoles and lets players choose a vertical or horizontal layout. The support page does not list split-screen for PC or Nintendo Switch 2; online connection support for a platform does not by itself mean that platform supports local split-screen.

Does Borderlands 4 have cross-play?
Yes. Borderlands Support says cross-play is available across the platforms where the game is available. The support article lists Steam, Epic, and Nintendo Switch 2 among platforms that can connect online. Gearbox has also described full cross-play at launch, alongside drop-in/drop-out online play.
Cross-play requires a SHiFT Account, according to Xbox Wire’s feature article. Online play also requires an internet connection. Console online play requires a separate paid subscription; check the relevant console service for its current terms. These requirements are separate from owning the game.
What makes its co-op easier to coordinate?
Different character levels
Gearbox says Borderlands 4 uses dynamic level scaling so players can contribute even when their Vault Hunters have different levels or gear. Anthony Nicholson, Senior Project Producer at Gearbox Entertainment, explains: “Dynamic level scaling ensures that everyone can contribute, so you can always play together regardless of differences between your Vault Hunters’ levels or gear loadouts.” This describes the intended design, rather than an independent performance test. Nicholson’s Xbox Wire article provides the feature details.

Different difficulty preferences
Gearbox also describes individual difficulty settings, allowing players in a group to choose difficulty preferences rather than forcing the whole party into a single setting.
Loot and regrouping
PlayStation’s feature article describes instanced loot, so each player gets loot for themselves, and fast travel directly to other players. Together, those systems are intended to make it easier to adventure as a group without turning every drop or regroup into a negotiation. See the PlayStation.Blog feature by Gearbox Creative Director Graeme Timmins.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it really the most co-op-friendly Borderlands game?
The label is reasonable if it refers to the breadth of the announced feature set: four-player online play, cross-play, console split-screen, mixed local-and-online parties, level scaling, individual difficulty settings, instanced loot, and fast travel to teammates. But the cited official sources describe Borderlands 4; they do not systematically compare every entry in the series or quantify co-op friendliness. So “most co-op-friendly yet” is an editorial conclusion based on these features, not a formally established series-wide ranking.
