Yes—Brittle Ice is renewable in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4. Keep a Blue Ice block in place, make a water block border it horizontally, and that water converts to Brittle Ice. The conversion can be repeated by replacing the water, and Mojang’s snapshot notes say Silk Touch can collect the resulting block. This is snapshot behavior documented for Java 26.4 Snapshot 4, published October 13, 2026; it should not be treated as confirmed Bedrock or post-snapshot behavior.
What “renewable” means for Brittle Ice
Minecraft does not label Brittle Ice “renewable” in the snapshot notes. The renewable conclusion comes from the conversion rule: a qualifying water block changes into Brittle Ice while the Blue Ice block remains available for another cycle. Nothing in the official description sets a finite number of conversions, a charge, or a one-time use for Blue Ice. In practical survival terms, a player can keep supplying water and repeat the process.

That makes Brittle Ice renewable through a block-conversion loop, not through a crafting recipe. You still need an initial Blue Ice block and a continuing water supply. The conversion itself is the renewable part; obtaining those starting materials is a separate question.
How the water-to-Brittle-Ice conversion works
Horizontal contact is the trigger
The Java Snapshot 4 notes first describe the effect as water flowing onto Blue Ice, then specify the condition more precisely: “Any water block that borders the Blue Ice block horizontally will turn into Brittle Ice.” For a build, treat horizontal bordering as side-by-side contact at the same height. Put the water in one of the four side-adjacent spaces around Blue Ice.

The documented condition does not say that water above, below, or diagonally adjacent to Blue Ice qualifies. Do not design a farm around those positions unless a later release documents different behavior.
The Blue Ice block is the reusable component
The rule converts the adjacent water block. A farm can therefore leave the Blue Ice in a fixed position and cycle water through the qualifying side position. The notes do not describe Blue Ice being consumed, damaged, or replaced by the conversion.

Mojang’s notes do not give a conversion tick count, a cooldown, a cracking duration, or a blocks-per-minute rate. Any claimed throughput, delay, or guaranteed redstone timing would go beyond the documented mechanics.
How to make and farm Brittle Ice
Use a Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4 world for the behavior described here. A simple manual setup is enough to establish the conversion before you attempt a larger build.

- Prepare the world. Launch Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 and gather at least one Blue Ice block, a water source or other way to place water, and a tool with Silk Touch if you want an item drop.
- Place Blue Ice. Put the Blue Ice where one side can remain accessible to a water block. Leave room to stand safely away from the conversion cell.
- Supply adjacent water. Place or feed water into a cell directly beside the Blue Ice on the same level. The water must border the Blue Ice horizontally.
- Check the result. The qualifying water block changes into Brittle Ice. If it does not, inspect the block positions first rather than changing unrelated redstone components.
- Harvest when needed. Break the Brittle Ice with Silk Touch to collect the block, as stated in the snapshot notes. Without Silk Touch, do not assume the block will be recoverable as an item.
- Reset the cell. Replace the water in the same side-adjacent position and repeat the conversion.
This loop is the complete farming concept documented by Mojang. It does not require repeatedly locating an Ice Cave after the Blue Ice and water are available.
A compact manual layout
Think of the farm as two cells: a permanent Blue Ice cell and a neighboring conversion cell. Keep the Blue Ice fixed, fill the conversion cell with water, wait for the block change, harvest the Brittle Ice, then refill that cell. You can add walls or a collection area around the cells, but the official notes do not prescribe a particular footprint.

Automation: what is and is not established
The conversion rule is compatible with the idea of a redstone-fed farm, but no official snapshot documentation publishes a redstone blueprint, piston arrangement, conversion interval, or tested automated design. You may experiment with dispensers, pistons, or collection systems in a copy of the snapshot world, but label any resulting timing or layout as your own build rather than an established mechanic.
Why Brittle Ice cracks under you
Brittle Ice is intentionally temporary when entities stand on it. Mojang’s notes state that once a player or mob steps on the block, it starts to crack and eventually breaks. The notes do not provide a measured number of ticks or seconds for that process, so there is no official duration to use for timing a trap or walkway.

Frostbite is the named exception: that mob can walk on Brittle Ice without breaking it. The exception does not make the block safe for players or other mobs.
Good and bad uses
- Traps and hazards: The cracking behavior can make a temporary floor or surprise drop possible.
- Temporary paths: A route can be made to disappear after entities cross it, but it needs careful access control.
- Novelty builds: Brittle Ice suits displays or challenge rooms where the breakaway effect is intentional.
- Ordinary walkways: It is a poor default choice because a player or most mobs can trigger its failure simply by standing on it.
Build collection and replacement into any design that expects the block to disappear. A farm that produces blocks faster than entities can break them is not guaranteed by the published mechanics; no production or break-rate statistics are available.
Where Brittle Ice generates naturally
Natural generation and renewable production are separate systems. In Java Snapshot 4, Brittle Ice generates naturally only in Ice Caves as part of the crevasse feature. Exploring those caves is the way to encounter the block in world generation.
Once you have Blue Ice and water, the conversion method provides a renewable source away from the original cave. You do not need to find a new crevasse for every batch, because the farm uses horizontal water contact rather than fresh terrain generation.

How it differs from ordinary ice farming
The established ice chain uses regular Ice, Packed Ice, and Blue Ice in a different way. Minecraft Wiki’s cited material describes Packed Ice as craftable from regular Ice and Blue Ice as craftable from Packed Ice; its ice-farming tutorial focuses on harvesting regular Ice for those recipes.

The cited material does not describe Brittle Ice as a crafting ingredient for Packed Ice or Blue Ice, nor as a replacement recipe for either block. A Brittle Ice farm therefore supplements the ordinary ice chain rather than extending it.

Every mechanic in this article is tied to Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4. Mojang’s Java Team published the relevant snapshot notes on October 13, 2026. Snapshot features can change before a full release, including names, recipes, generation rules, and conversion behavior.
There is no confirmed Bedrock rule in the cited material. Do not assume that a Bedrock world, an earlier Java release, or a later release has the same block or conversion. If you are testing another edition or version, verify that version’s own release notes before building a survival project around Brittle Ice.

Troubleshooting a farm that does not work
The water stays water
- Check that the water cell is directly beside the Blue Ice, not above, below, or diagonal to it.
- Confirm that the Blue Ice is actually the block being bordered; a different ice type does not satisfy the documented trigger.
- Verify that the world is running Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 or a release that explicitly retains the mechanic.
The block disappears while I am building
That is expected if a player or another ordinary mob steps on it. Place the conversion cell behind a barrier or work from an adjacent block so entities do not occupy the Brittle Ice.

I cannot pick up the block
The snapshot notes specifically identify Silk Touch as the collection method. Use a Silk Touch tool when you need the block item; otherwise, do not plan on recovering the converted block.
I am trying to calculate output
No official number is available for conversion speed, cracking duration, or farm throughput. Measure a particular experimental design yourself in the exact snapshot you play, and expect those values to change if Mojang changes the feature.
