Is Call of Duty Cross-Platform? Black Ops 6 Cross-Play and Cross-Progression Explained

Yes. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 supports cross-play between PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and it supports cross-progression through a shared Activision account. A PlayStation 5 player can play with an Xbox or PC player, and the same player can carry ranks, statistics, weapon and camo progress, unlocked content and Battle Pass progress between linked platforms. The critical requirement is using the same Activision account everywhere. COD Points are the major documented exception: they remain tied to the platform for spending.

What “cross-platform” means in Call of Duty

“Cross-platform” is commonly used for two separate features. Understanding the distinction prevents most account and purchase surprises.

Cross-play

Cross-play lets people using different hardware platforms join the same online multiplayer session. In Black Ops 6, players on supported PlayStation, Xbox and PC versions can play together through Activision’s online services. That is why a PS5 player and an Xbox Series X|S player can be placed in the same match, or join the same party with a PC player.

Cross-play is a matchmaking feature. It does not determine where your profile is stored, which platform owns a purchase, or whether every playlist has identical settings. Activision’s Black Ops 6 support guidance says cross-play continues at launch and allows players on all supported platforms to play together. The guidance is dated April 3, 2025.

  • Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.

  • The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
  • In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
  • Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.

Cross-progression

Cross-progression means your Call of Duty progress is associated with your Activision account rather than locked to one console or PC installation. When the same Activision identity is linked to each platform, your multiplayer statistics, rank, weapon progress, camo progress, unlocked content and Battle Pass progress can appear after you sign in elsewhere.

Cross-play and cross-progression are independent. You could play with friends on another platform without correctly linking every device, but your progress will not follow you reliably if the new platform is attached to a different Activision account. Likewise, linking accounts does not automatically make every currency or entitlement universal.

Which platforms support Black Ops 6 cross-play?

Activision lists Black Ops 6 availability for PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Battle.net, Steam and Game Pass. The PC entries represent different storefront or launcher choices, while PlayStation and Xbox entries represent console versions. Cross-play applies among the supported platform versions through Activision’s online services.

Platform or access route Can participate in Black Ops 6 cross-play? Account requirement What to check before buying or installing
PlayStation Yes, with supported Black Ops 6 online playlists Link the PlayStation account to the Activision account you use for Call of Duty Confirm the PlayStation edition and your region
Xbox Yes, with supported Black Ops 6 online playlists Link the Xbox account to the same Activision account used on other devices Confirm whether you are using a purchased edition or access through Game Pass
Windows PC Yes, through supported PC access Use the same Activision identity on the PC installation Check which PC access route you are installing
Battle.net PC Yes, when signed in with the linked Activision account Link the Battle.net account to that Activision identity Verify the Battle.net edition and region
Steam PC Yes, when signed in with the linked Activision account Link the Steam account to that Activision identity Verify the Steam edition and region
Game Pass Online play uses the supported Xbox or Windows access associated with Game Pass Use the Activision account linked to the Microsoft account you are playing through Check the current Game Pass catalog and the access tier available in your region

Availability and catalog access can change by region, edition and subscription date. The platform list above reflects Activision’s current Black Ops 6 availability information, not a guarantee that every edition, mode or subscription benefit is identical in every country.

Can PS5 and Xbox play Call of Duty together?

Yes. A PlayStation player and an Xbox player can join one another in supported Black Ops 6 multiplayer experiences. The same cross-play system also allows supported PC players to join console players. One person creates or joins the party, the other accepts the invitation through the in-game social system, and matchmaking can then place the mixed-platform party into an eligible playlist.

Cross-play does not remove platform-specific input or matchmaking considerations. Console players can change their cross-play preference, and a party containing people from multiple platform groups may require a broader setting so that everyone can be matched together. If a setting blocks a friend’s platform, the invitation may work while matchmaking fails, or the party may be unable to enter a particular playlist.

How to turn cross-play on or off

The exact options depend on the platform and the playlist being played. On supported console versions, Activision provides three choices: On, On (Consoles Only) and Off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the in-game console setting

  1. Launch Black Ops 6 or the supported Call of Duty experience on your console.
  2. Open the game’s Settings menu.
  3. Go to Account & Network.
  4. Find the cross-play control and choose On, On (Consoles Only) or Off, if that option is available for the current playlist.
  5. Return to matchmaking and test the setting with your party. If a mixed-platform party cannot queue, make sure the party leader’s setting allows all platforms represented in the party.

What each choice does

  • On: permits matchmaking with players on the supported PlayStation, Xbox and PC platforms.
  • On (Consoles Only): limits cross-play to console players where the option is supported, excluding PC players from that matchmaking pool.
  • Off: disables cross-platform matchmaking where the playlist and platform support that control. You may then match only within the platform’s available player pool.

These controls are not a promise that every playlist exposes all three choices. Activision’s console-setting guidance and 2025 patch notes describe the options as available in supported contexts. If a menu item is missing, the current mode, platform policy or title version may not expose it.

How to carry your progress from console to PC

Progress follows the Activision account, not simply the purchase account for a console store or PC launcher. Set up the account links before you begin leveling on a second platform.

  1. Identify your existing Call of Duty identity. Sign in to the Activision account you already use for Black Ops 6 or Warzone. If you have more than one Activision account, check which one contains your current rank and unlocks before linking anything.
  2. Open the linked-accounts area. In your Activision account management page, open the section for linked accounts.
  3. Connect every platform you intend to use. Link the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or Microsoft account that corresponds to the device on which you will play.
  4. Launch the game on the second platform. Sign in with the same Activision identity rather than creating a new Call of Duty account during setup.
  5. Confirm the profile in-game. Check your displayed name, rank, statistics and unlocked content. If the profile looks empty, stop playing and verify the account link before earning more progress on the wrong identity.
  6. Check cross-play controls separately. Account linking controls progression; the Account & Network cross-play option controls who can be placed in your matches.

Activision describes game progression as being stored on the Activision account. That is why a correctly linked move from console to PC can preserve progress even when the PC copy is installed through a different launcher.

What transfers between linked platforms?

With the same Activision account linked, the documented cross-progression categories include the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Multiplayer statistics and profile history
  • Player rank and level progress
  • Weapon progression
  • Weapon and other camo progress
  • Unlocked content
  • Battle Pass progress

The practical test is whether the item or progress is recorded as part of your Activision profile. Sign in on the second platform and allow the game to synchronize before assuming something is missing. A different account link produces a genuinely different profile, so it can look like progress has been deleted when it is actually still attached to the original account.

Do COD Points carry over?

COD Points are the principal documented exception to otherwise broad cross-progression. Their balance is tied to the platform for spending. In other words, COD Points purchased or held on one platform should not be treated as a single universally spendable wallet when you switch to another platform.

Many purchased items can work across linked platforms, but currency and entitlement rules are not identical. Treat the points balance as platform-specific and verify the platform on which you intend to spend before buying more. If an item was purchased with COD Points, its availability may follow the linked account even though the unused currency balance does not function the same way everywhere.

Progress or purchase type Expected behavior across linked platforms Important qualification
Rank and statistics Stored with the Activision account and available on linked platforms All platforms must use the same Activision account
Weapon and camo progress Stored with the Activision account A different account link creates a separate progress record
Unlocked content Generally available on linked platforms when attached to the account Check the specific entitlement and edition
Battle Pass progress Follows the linked Activision account Do not switch to a different Activision identity
COD Points balance Platform-tied for spending Do not assume a balance purchased on one platform is spendable on another
Purchased items Many items work across linked platforms Item, platform and entitlement rules can differ

What happens if you link the wrong Activision account?

Linking a platform account to another Activision account does not merge the two profiles. Activision states that if you link your platform account to a different Activision account, your progress will not carry over. Your existing progress remains associated with the original Activision account rather than moving to the newly linked one.

Recovery path

  1. Stop playing on the newly linked account so you do not confuse which profile contains which progress.
  2. Open Activision account management and review the platform links.
  3. Relink the platform to the original Activision account that contains your Black Ops 6 progress.
  4. Restart the game and allow the profile to synchronize.
  5. If the original link cannot be restored through account management, use Activision’s account-support process rather than creating additional accounts.

Relinking the original account restores access to the progress stored there; it does not combine progress earned separately on two different Activision accounts. Keep a written record of which PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or Microsoft identity is attached to your main Activision profile before changing links.

Buying Black Ops 6 when your friends use other platforms

You do not need to buy the same storefront version as your friends to use cross-play. A PlayStation edition, Xbox edition, Steam installation, Battle.net installation or supported Windows/Game Pass access can connect to the same cross-platform service, provided the title and online features are available in your region and each player signs in with an eligible Activision account.

Before purchasing, compare the edition and access route rather than the friend’s hardware alone:

  • Confirm that the listing is for Black Ops 6 and not a different Call of Duty title or bundle.
  • Check the platform, region and edition shown by the retailer or subscription service.
  • Confirm that the version includes the online access you need.
  • Plan your Activision account link before launching for the first time.
  • Remember that changing storefronts does not change the account rules for progression or COD Points.

Game Pass access is catalog-based and can change. Check the current availability in your country and the subscription tier that provides the version you want. Retail stock, digital editions and regional entitlements can also change, so verify those details at checkout.

Troubleshooting cross-play and progression problems

You cannot invite a friend on another platform

  • Confirm that both players are running a supported Black Ops 6 version and are online.
  • Check that each player has signed in to an Activision account.
  • Review the console player’s cross-play setting under Settings > Account & Network.
  • If the party is mixed-platform, temporarily use On so every represented platform can enter matchmaking.
  • Try leaving and recreating the party after changing the setting.

Your rank or unlocks are missing on the second device

  • Stop earning progress until the account identity is confirmed.
  • Compare the Activision account used on the original device with the one shown on the second device.
  • Check the linked-accounts area for the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or Microsoft account.
  • Relink the platform to the original Activision account if it was attached elsewhere.
  • Restart the game after correcting the link and allow synchronization to finish.

Your COD Points balance is different

First check the platform on which the points were purchased. COD Points are tied to the platform for spending, so a different balance on another platform is not, by itself, evidence that your Black Ops 6 progression failed to transfer. Check the item or entitlement separately from the currency balance.

A cross-play option is missing

Cross-play controls can vary by platform, playlist and title version. Confirm that you are looking in Settings > Account & Network on a supported console and that the current playlist exposes the control. The absence of an option does not change the account-linking rules for progression.
